Chapter 438: You Are Too Kind!

Evelyn’s phone vibrated again.

The sudden buzz sliced cleanly through the quiet room, tearing apart the fragile peace she had just managed to build.

She groaned softly into her pillow, her voice muffled by cotton and exhaustion.

"...Please, God. Don’t let it be another family panic attack," she muttered.

With one tired hand, she dragged herself toward the bedside table and reached blindly for the phone. Her eyes were only half open when she grabbed it.

Then they widened fully.

Oscar.

Just like that, the last trace of sleep vanished.

Evelyn pushed herself upright against the headboard, brushing her hair away from her face as she answered the call.

"Oscar," she said dryly, "you called me at the perfect time. I was just about to slip into a sweet dream. Thank you, my dear friend."

Oscar laughed immediately, clearly recognizing her sarcasm.

"You’re welcome," he replied without shame.

But the humor only lasted for half a second.

"Eve, are you alright?" His voice rushed through the line, tight with worry and edged with unmistakable panic.

Evelyn closed her eyes briefly.

There it was again.

That same question.

That same tone.

She had heard it all evening.

From Alicia. From relatives. From people who probably never even liked Axel but suddenly felt qualified to judge him.

Instead of answering directly, she leaned back against the headboard and asked calmly, "What do you think?"

On the other end, Oscar let out a deep, dramatic, and loud sigh, as if he were preparing to give a speech at a crowded funeral.

"I think," he began solemnly, "that you must be heartbroken right now because your ungrateful, handsome, rich husband stabbed you from behind."

Evelyn almost choked to hear that. Still, she pressed her lips, trying not to make any sounds.

"My lord," Oscar continued in the same calm tone, which made his words even more explosive, "how could he have another child with another woman? Tsk. Tsk. Tsk. Axel Knight... You are really courting death this time."

Evelyn pressed her lips together, trying not to laugh.

If Axel heard this, her poor husband might faint on the spot. Or worse, drag Oscar into a meeting room and lecture him about loyalty.

"Don’t be too sad, my friend Eve," Oscar went on passionately. "If my foolish brother-in-law cannot give you a good explanation about this matter, I will personally bring my best bodyguard. We will go after him and beat him until even his mother cannot recognize his handsome face."

Evelyn blinked.

"Oscar, please don’t ruin his face," she said calmly. "I still like looking at it."

There was a brief silence.

Then Oscar gasped dramatically. "What the heck! Are you defending him?"

"I am protecting my eyesight."

Oscar clicked his tongue loudly. "Unbelievable. You are too kind."

He paused again, clearly not done.

"Alright," he continued, lowering his voice like a secret agent, "stop thinking about him and his so-called mistress. I will clean up his mess. I will delete all that gossip news and make your name shine again. I will make sure the netizens will kneel in shame."

Despite his nonstop yapping being extremely amusing, Evelyn’s eyelids felt heavy again. Her head throbbed faintly from the emotional marathon of the day.

"Are you done talking?" she asked flatly.

"Yes. Yes," Oscar replied quickly. "I will not disturb my Queen any longer. Go to sleep, beauty. We will talk about it tomorrow. How does that sound?"

Evelyn hesitated for a moment before speaking.

"Hm. But don’t do anything about the news." She hurriedly added.

Silence. 𝗳𝚛𝗲𝕖𝚠𝚎𝚋𝗻𝗼𝕧𝗲𝐥.𝚌𝚘𝐦

Then—

"What the heck—" Oscar’s voice shot up. "Are you serious?"

"Yes."

"This trash news has been on the internet for hours..." he exclaimed. "But, your handsome jerk husband still hasn’t done anything? Or did his hacker fail to clean it up?"

Evelyn pinched the bridge of her nose, feeling a headache slowly forming. "Oscar..."

"No, listen to me," he insisted. "If he cannot handle it, I will. I have skills. I have anger... I can do this light work in just a few minutes. This is not a big deal for me."

"I know you can. But, please don’t do anything about it."

"Why?" Oscar no longer sounds calm but worried as he asked, "Eve, did you already decide to accept his mistress?"

She exhaled slowly. "Oscar, seriously, I’m tired." Her tone softened. "Axel will take care of it."

"But, Eve—"

Oscar can’t finish his words as Evelyn stops him.

"I trust him. And I don’t care about the news out there."

The line went quiet once again.

Oscar was so familiar with her that he recognized that tone instantly. It wasn’t blind loyalty or denial; it was certainty.

Still, he could not resist one last protest.

"If he disappoints you," Oscar muttered darkly, "I already have a black suit prepared."

"For a funeral?" she asked lightly.

"For him."

Evelyn finally laughed, the sound easing the tightness in her chest.

"You are dramatic, Oscar!"

"I am your protective best friend!"

Evelyn can’t help but chuckle, "I know."

There was another pause, softer this time.

"Oh... Okay," Oscar said at last, his voice returning to its usual cheerful warmth. "Have a good night’s sleep, Eve."

"You too," she replied gently.

"And if you suddenly decide you want revenge at three in the morning... please call me. I will stand by here."

"I will keep that in mind, my friend."

She ended the call and stared at the dark screen for a moment.

The room was quiet again. Slowly, she turned the phone’s power off.

This time, she truly meant it.

No more calls.

No more panic.

No more dramatic threats against her husband’s gorgeous face.

She placed the phone back on the table and slid under the covers, pulling the blanket up to her chin. Her body finally surrendered to exhaustion.

Yet even as her eyes closed, her thoughts drifted briefly to Axel.

Stuck at work.

Handling something.

Silent on the internet, but not silent to her.

"Take care, hubby. I trust you unconditionally," she murmured softly into the darkness.

And this time, with no more interruptions, Evelyn allowed sleep to claim her completely.
