Chapter 237: 237. Garrett Just Announced That Mara Was Pregnant! (Congrats, It Was My Child!)

Rex read the description with the interest of someone who had already spent his free selection and was now processing that information.

"This is not martial arts," he said, to no one. "But fuck! Why do you have to separate both of them?!"

He reviewed the catalog entry for Martial Arts once more. Full potential. Unarmed combat disciplines. He examined the description line by line, searching for any reasonable interpretation that might incorporate weapons handling.

And...

...It wasn’t there.

Weapons and unarmed combat were categorized as two distinct disciplines within the system’s organizational structure. This classification resulted in separate catalog entries for each. Consequently, the free skill selection he had made for martial arts did not encompass weapons mastery.

As a result, he found himself relying on combat weapon skills akin to someone who had only wielded a sword for demonstration purposes.

He stood in his room for a moment, absorbing this information.

"You are a total fucking scam," he said. "A LOT OF FUCKING MARTIAL ARTS WIELD WEAPONS, YOU FUCKING SCAMMING SON OF A BITCH!"

He said it with the specific quality of someone who had been surprised by the precise contours of an outcome rather than by the outcome itself, because he had not been surprised by the infinite regeneration situation either, just by where exactly the limitation had been placed.

The system did not respond.

"You motherfucker..." Rex gritted his teeth. "I should’ve known that lustful bitch is behind all of this."

Rex put the catalog away and looked at the ceiling.

"First, the regeneration scam still hurts," he said to the ceiling. "Now I’ve mastered every way to hit someone with my hands, but I’m still holding a sword like a farmers market tourist."

He looked at the morning light.

"Two separate entries," he said, as though confirming the injustice of the organizational structure.

"Fuck! Forget it!"

Then he let it go, knowing he had a thousand energy points, full martial arts mastery, and a morning that had chosen to be cheerful. He reminded himself that the weapons catalog entry would still be available when he accumulated enough points to access it.

"Let me just check the cost—three thousand points?! Oh, you motherfucking motherfucker! Rex nearly punched the floor, but his foresight warned him that such a blow could reduce the inn to rubble.

"Grggghhh! I need a cup of coffee and some beautiful woman that can calm my ass down."

He put on his clothes and went down before he could crash out.

...

The Silver Rest’s common room in the morning had the specific texture of a well-run inn at the transitional hour between the end of breakfast service and the beginning of midday, the hour when the kitchen was still warm from the first service and the staff was moving through the comfortable routine of reset.

The aroma of freshly brewed coffee mixed with the lingering scent of eggs and bacon, creating a warm and inviting atmosphere. Patrons engaged in quiet conversations at their tables, while a few others lingered by the fireplace, absorbed in their thoughts as they enjoyed their drinks.

When Rex came down, Mara was behind the bar, giving him the same look she had since their first few months together. It was a look that showed no signs of changing in quality or intensity.

Rex looked at her and gave her the small nod that was their signal for the version of things that didn’t require words in the common room.

She gave him the one that said she had heard it and would carry it through the day with the same competent discretion she applied to everything.

Rex settled at the table by the eastern window, where the morning light streamed in at the perfect angle for contemplation. He was on the verge of asking Mara for the coffee she typically had ready by this hour when a noise emanated from the kitchen.

It was a scream from a man overwhelmed by happiness.

The scream caused many people to stand up. It was a specific type of scream, one that conveyed a distinct emotional signature: someone had received news that was too overwhelming to process quietly.

Garrett Kesson came out of the kitchen door three seconds after the shout. He looked like someone who had just been told something that changed everything he thought he knew and was now figuring out where to put the furniture.

He was moving quickly, not quite running, but with a sense of urgency that stemmed from knowing exactly where he needed to go.

Mara was that destination.

He got to the bar and put his arms around her with the simple excitement of someone who had been married long enough to have lost the performative quality of affection but not the affection itself. He was whispering something into her hair that seemed to repeat four or five times, as if once was not sufficient.

Rex watched the moment from his table with the look of someone who knows everything about what’s going on.

Mara’s hands moved to Garrett’s back as she warmed him up with the things she did out of habit and genuine feeling at the same time. One of her hands moved from his back to her stomach in a small, specific way that showed she had just learned something new about her body that she hadn’t known yesterday.

"We’re going to have a baby," Garrett said loudly enough for the three other people in the common room to hear, and his tone reflected that of someone who believed the room deserved to know. "She just told me...!"

"We’re going to have our first baby ever!"

"I’m going to be a DADDYYYY~! WOOOOOOO~!"

Mara wore a smile that was different from her usual professional demeanor in the common room; this one was more genuine and warm. For a brief moment, her gaze shifted to Rex, carrying an unspoken depth that only he could understand.

Rex then asked. "How do you know she’s pregnant?"

Garrett turned to Rex and replied, "She was feeling sick this morning and ended up throwing up, so I had to take her to the nearest hospital."

"The nurse checked on her with healing magic, and then she’s going to tell us her condition exactly this morning!" Garrett then smiled at Mara. "It turns out...! She was pregnant!"

"I’m SOOOO EXCITED~! I can’t wait to bring my first kid to go fishing with me~!"

Rex sighed. ’He still thinks about fishing, huh?’

’What a fucking pussy.’

Mara turned back to Garrett, still smiling, and said in the voice she used when she was being completely honest and a little bit naughty, "I wonder which of us the little one will take after."

The words had the shape of a simple maternal musing.

Only Rex heard the additional layer, and he looked at the window with the expression of someone who had suddenly become genuinely interested in what was happening in the street outside.

Rex replied in his mind. "Of course..."

"...it’s going to be Rex Rexilion."

Marceline appeared at his left elbow with a cup of coffee. She had the particular skill of arriving at tables with what they needed at precisely the moment they needed it, and she set it down in front of him with the steady efficiency that was her characteristic mode.

Rex took the cup and looked at her.

Marceline was observing the interaction between Garrett and Mara, and the expression on her face was the specific one that indicated someone was experiencing multiple emotions at once and was actively processing those feelings.

It was a look Rex had seen on faces before. He knew its precise contents.

’That fucking look... she really wants to get pregnant as well, huh?’

’Well, perfect fucking timing because we’re going to do it after I met your husband.’

He wrapped his hands around the coffee cup and said nothing, because what Marceline’s expression required was not words from him but presence, and he was present, and the morning light was continuing to be cheerful about everything.

Marceline noticed that Mara was looking at her, and they both smiled at each other. "Congratulations on your pregnancy, Mara."

Mara nodded and replied, "Thank you, Marceline. I’m sorry; it seems like I really need a lot more breaks from now on."

Marceline chuckled softly. "Well, you deserve all the rest you can get; it’s a beautiful journey ahead!"

"And, don’t worry! I can just hire someone to help with the extra work."

Mara’s eyes lit up at the suggestion. "That would be wonderful! It would really take some of the pressure off while I adjust to this new Chapter."

Mara then held her face in her hands. "I think you’re going to be next, right?"

Marceline giggled. "I don’t know..."

"Maybe...?"
