Chapter 216: 216. Are All Main Characters Brain Dead Just Like This Guy?

"Grrggghhhhh...! You heartless bastard...!!!"

Rex observed Apollo’s body trembling with immense power emanating from his fire and light. His foresight revealed the many potential outcomes if Apollo lost control. This realization only heightened Rex’s desire to provoke Apollo into a state of rage.

The fire and light emanating from Apollo’s body resembled a force that had been confined for far too long, now desperate to break free. With each passing second, it became increasingly unruly, and Rex continued to observe it with a calculated gaze.

Rex thought, "Oh yes... just what I wanted, even though such an act is a naive thing for me to do... I already have an escape plan."

"My plan right now as the Undead Bringer is to see how far I could make that asshole lose himself... the more he loses control... the better the result," he smirked.

Rex stood in the middle and used his energy manipulation field to its fullest extent, reading the output in real time and taking in the force like a breakwater takes in the tide. Apollo’s combined magic pushed out in all directions, not just one, but all of them.

It was the kind of release that happened when someone stopped making decisions about what to destroy and just let go of the ability to do it without limits.

"Hohhh... so you’re still hiding all this much power, huh?" Rex asked. "Why do this after you let someone die?"

"Are you fucking stupid enough to not care about her?"

"SHUT THE FUCK UP...!!! Apollo screamed, causing the stone walls at the edge of the plaza to continue shattering.

The second archway lost its keystone and fell down in a controlled cascade of blocks. The arch’s structural integrity turned into rubble as soon as the center was gone.

The last basin of the fountain cracked along a hairline fracture that had probably been there for decades but was now important for the first time.

Rex paid as much attention to all of this as he did to useful information. "Yes...! Yes...!!!"

"Give it all to your desire...! Rage all you want, and try to defeat me with every ounce of your power!" Rex raised both his arms to provoke him more. "Don’t you want to kill me?!"

"Or is it wrong in the name of the Goddess of Life that killing an enemy was prohibited?!"

"I said... SHUT UUPPPP!!!" He released an even more massive shockwave, and Rex had to use his telekinesis to block it so that he didn’t get blown away.

The clock was running because Apollo’s activation was going on, and it’s probably four minutes at most. This uncontrolled release was costing him more in terms of system reserve than a directed use would have because the uncontrolled version always burned faster than the controlled one.

Rex had some time, but the question remained: what would Apollo do when the first burst ran out? Rex could already sense that disappointment was on the horizon.

He noticed the burst growing thinner. It hadn’t stopped, but it had diminished.

Rex could feel the change in the pressure difference in his field. The output was pulling back, coming together, and rearranging itself from all over at once into something with a purpose, which suggested that it was preparing for a more focused and potentially dangerous action.

And that could be worse.

Through the smoke, dust, and settling rubble, Apollo’s voice emerged. It didn’t sound like a voice eager to be heard. Instead, it carried the weight of a decision, as if it had resolved that the air must transmit it.

"Zeraphyra...!"

He called her name in a flat tone, as if he couldn’t accept the reality of what he saw etched on a gravestone.

"You... heartless bastard... you fucking killed her without any hesitation!"

"Yeah, I did." Rex crossed his arms. "What are you going to do about it?"

"Whine like the little pussy you are?"

The temperature shot up. Rex’s field picked it up at all sensor points at once.

"She... was mine to protect!" Apollo tried to control himself further when his voice kept getting louder.

"She... was MINE to keep as MY WIFEEEE!!!" Apollo’s voice cracked on the last word, not because he was weak, but because of the kind of pressure that breaks stone. "Do you know what she meant to me?!"

"Do you have ANY idea what I’m looking at right now?"

"I don’t know... it seems to me you’re looking at night with that progression of having a harem." Rex raised one arm. "Why bother having a harem if you haven’t fucked them all?"

"Well... it’s not surprising either because some main character acts like a pussy enough to let their harem wait until they get stolen by somebody else."

"SHUT UP! I’LL CHOOSE LOVE OVER LUST ALL DAY!" Apollo shouted, stomping on the ground with enough force to crack it.

"She laughed..." and his voice got lower, which was somehow louder than the yelling. "She thought the dumbest things were funny...!"

"Did you know that? Did you even care to learn anything about her before you—"

"Why should I learn something that doesn’t give me any benefits?" Rex tilted his head. "If she’s willing to give her body to me, then I’ll be glad to fuck her all day, you know?"

Apollo’s rage became more intensified when Rex said that. "You fucking bastard...! She was still warm when I saw her dead by you!"

"Still warm, huh? Isn’t that good for you?" Rex laughed. "You can fuck her now if you have the chance before she gets cold."

"YOU...!!!" Apollo gritted his teeth, and Rex could see his body emanating light and fire, combining into a solar power that illuminated nearly all of Aethelgard.

Some people who were far enough away could see it, and even many of the most significant figures in Aethelgard noticed, including Valentina, who watched from her office, trusting that Apollo could manage this as the chosen one prophesied by the Goddess of Life.

"I have walked through wars... I have witnessed kingdoms fall... I have lost things that could bring kings to tears, and I did NOT—" He paused to take a breath, striving to calm himself. "I didn’t break... not even once, and not for any of it!"

Rex stood his ground while he started to think about what Apollo said about a kingdom. ’There’s a kingdom here, huh...? What good foreshadowing for what’s about to come in the future...’

Apollo’s eyes locked onto him through the fog, like a targeting system locks on and stops looking.

"Zeraphyra, I can’t—" The words stopped working for a moment. "I can’t... bring her back."

"I can’t do that...! There’s no way for my power to undo THIS!"

"Can you hear me?! I have moved mountains! I have changed the shape of things! And I CAN’T—"

Rex screamed at him. "Just shut the fuck up and fight me already, you whiny-ass baby!"

After hearing Rex’s continued provocations, Apollo made a sound that was no longer recognizable as words. It was the sound of someone figuring out for the first time that there are things that power can’t touch.

Then it turned back into words, but quieter. This meant that Rex had about four seconds before everything in the plaza became a problem.

"You didn’t just kill her, bastard!"

"Oh my fucking..." Rex facepalmed. "Are all main characters brain dead just like this guy with their words?"

Now his voice was almost soft. "You killed the last person who made me want to keep the fire going...!"

He stepped forward. "And now... I’m going to make sure you know exactly how much that costs!"

Rex adjusted the margins of his field. Four minutes had turned into a whole new kind of problem.

"Just what I was waiting for...!"

"Come at me with everything you’ve got!"
