Chapter 62: An Abusive Husband

Adal left the Velvet Curtain Theatre for the day, warning the crew members that Willow was sleeping backstage and not to disturb her.

In reality, the woman was slumped in the chair, with liquids still dripping down the insides of her legs. It was a problem that she could deal with upon waking.

Adal had multiple matters to attend to before heading back to the library. Since the sun was still high, he did not have to rush. As long as Penelope and Juliette were handling things well, all would be fine.

He spent a few notes to clean himself at a nearby bathhouse. Willow’s juices were still on his body.

As he soaked himself in the bath, he used his smartphone to enter Richard Banker’s name into Wikipedia, the man who had been talking to Willow before he had arrived.

Not enough information.

Search: The Banker Family

That’s better, but how far can this Wikipedia really go?

Very interesting.

It seemed that if a topic existed on Wikipedia, Adal could search further to gather more information. However, if that information was not known by the system, the search results would simply come up blank.

For example, when he searched for the details surrounding the two families’ agreements, nothing came up.

Whatever the Royal Family and the Bankers had that connected them to one another was so confidential that even the system would not provide the information to him.

Adal was a smart man, however. If he had to guess, the royal family were well aware of the extortion happening under the Banker family name, and were probably taking a percentage.

He scratched at his chin as he lay in the bath.

Is that enough to deem the royal family as corrupt, and have them taken out by the Sun Elves?

...

It still wasn’t enough information to go off of.

That was when Adal decided on his next location. He would travel to the Iglantis Kingdom Palace and visit Opal, without her father knowing. He would ask Opal to write a note to her sister Iris, the Prince’s wife, and use her to gather information on what the royal family was like, and whether or not they were righteous people.

First, he wished to pay someone else a visit.

Using the Wikipedia, he continued to search, and search. He found results, and those results led him to new results, until eventually, he was standing in front of a house on Clapridge Road, owned by Richard Banker. 𝙛𝒓𝓮𝒆𝔀𝒆𝙗𝓷𝒐𝙫𝒆𝙡.𝒄𝓸𝓶

The sun was starting to set, and there was activity going on only on the highest floor of the house.

Since he did not live in a family estate, and only owned a single house on the road, Adal found that it was not heavily guarded.

Trying not to look as casual as possible, he walked past the house and glanced through the lowest windows.

That confirmed it. The bottom floor was empty.

He snuck round the back of the house.

Being a low-crime city, residents of Fairwhite City often left their windows and doors open. For that reason, the door leading to the garden just so happened to be unlocked, allowing Adal to slip inside.

He did not know what his true intentions were as he crept through the living room of the house, but he had a few ideas.

Voices came from above, gradually growing louder and louder. They were muffled, suggesting that they were coming from behind a door.

Adal made his way upstairs quietly and ended up in a corridor. At the end, a door was shut, and two loud voices came from the other side.

He pressed his ear up to the door.

"This line of work has to stop, Richard! What would your mother think of you?"

*SMACK*

A feminine cry screeched through the house, followed by a thud on the ground.

"Fuck that wench, let’s talk about my father. What would he think?"

The sound of a man spitting came from behind the door.

"Don’t answer. He would praise me for following in his footsteps, and when your time comes, you will follow in my mother’s footsteps. You’ll birth my child, and you’ll be happy with it, because the men of the Banker family gave you a life full of riches."

*THUD*

As the man shouted, Adal used the opportunity to crack open the door so that his eye could peer through.

There was the man from earlier, muscular and broad, standing over a woman who lay on the floor as he kicked her.

He had a cigar, and moved towards the window to smoke it, leaving the woman wheezing in pain as she lay on the floor.

Adal examined every detail about her that he possibly could, before swiftly heading back downstairs and leaving through the garden exit.

Once back out on the streets and heading home, he unclenched his fists which he didn’t even realise were clenched.

His face looked calm, but on the inside, he felt completely different.

That is all the confirmation that I need. Richard is a man who does not belong here. As for his wife, Colette Banker, why do women allow themselves to end up with such terrible men?

He entered a chariot and as it rolled down the streets of Fairwhite City, heading back to his library, a singular thought crossed his mind.

Your husband is abusive, isn’t he, Colette? Do not worry, we will both benefit when he is gone. You will be free of your abuser, and I will have completed my current quest.
