The Last King Of Darkness-Chapter 1338 - 662: Abyss (First Update)
This is an unimaginably large cave; it’s hard to imagine such a gigantic cavity deep underground.
When Rod jumped from the cave’s top, the long fall made him briefly think he’d jumped into the abyss.
But no, he finally stepped onto the ground, and the abyssal aura engulfed him, the terrifying pollution rising from the depths, indicating that this place was indeed very close to the abyss.
Rod surveyed the surroundings, discovering that this cave wasn’t natural; the ground was extremely flat, and differently sized pillars were scattered throughout the cave according to some pattern.
Horus said gravely, "This is the sealing that suppresses the Abyss, set by the Giants of ancient times. They can use the weight of the world to suppress the Abyss."
Rod exclaimed, "How was this done?"
"Position."
Peibela whispered.
"I’ve told you about the knowledge of the planes and position. If you haven’t forgotten, you should remember that the Material World is at the lowest spatial position, and the Void is the origin, the zero position."
"The Abyss is a very special plane. It is different from the Material World, Spirit Realm, and Sea of Source. It is independent of the planar system, has a negative existence in terms of position, but is not compressed by the planes, hence the Abyss often experiences anomalies, with extremely active space."
She gently stroked a nearby pillar, which was silver-gray, like an ancient totem.
"The pillars can sense the pressure of spatial position; they seem not to be material but the plane itself. The sealing ritual they form can transmit this pressure to the plane of the abyss, thus suppressing the abyss and inhibiting its anomalies."
Qingyu sighed lightly, "We absolutely cannot fathom how the Giants accomplished this. Our understanding of space, of position, of spirit, is far below their level. This is a super spiritual power technology we have never seen before."
Horus said, "The role of the Silver Oath is to strengthen this sealing. Although we cannot understand it, it is essentially still a sealing, which can strengthen other seals, and also strengthen it."
"But even with this, it took us many years to create, relying on Theodore’s wisdom. Sadly, he reached the limit of life. In his younger years, he killed too many monsters, and the pollution to his soul is irreversible... Rod, you also need to be careful, don’t rely on your youth and recklessly kill monsters."
Peibela smiled as she looked at Rod’s strong and well-proportioned body: "Once the body reaches a perfect state, our lifespan will greatly extend; theoretically, 100 years is absolutely no problem. With each advancement, life will increase accordingly, and if we reach King Level, we can live for five hundred years. If we become True Kings, our lifespan will exceed a thousand years, almost infinite."
"But in fact, very few of us live past 100 years, because constant pollution is eroding our life, corrupting our soul."
Rod felt somewhat uncomfortable with Peibela’s gaze. He wasn’t interested in an aunt, though Peibela still looked beautiful, with a voluptuous figure, rounded peaks, and jade-like smoothness, but the age difference made him always feel he was facing an elder:
"Ahem, um, can’t we purify the pollution?"
Peibela shook her head slightly: "No matter how we purify, there are tiny invisible pollutant residues in life and soul. Even if you remake your flesh, it won’t be eliminated, and repetitive corruption weakens our resistance, making our soul and life gradually become the corruption itself. This is irreversible; the only solution is not to touch pollution and corruption."
Rod’s heart sank; he didn’t know if humanity’s purification could surpass such limits, but it was absolutely impossible for him not to kill monsters.
"I understand."
Rod agreed verbally.
"I will pay attention."
Horus gave him a satisfied look; Dean Theodore’s departure was a huge loss for Trolian. At his peak, his power even surpassed the King of the time, becoming Trolian’s only Monarch Level, but unfortunately, the pollution he endured was too heavy. His peak only lasted for a short time; later, he left the frontline and retired to the academy, allowing him to live that long.
This was also one of Horus’s greatest regrets.
If Theodore had been more rational and remained active on the battlefield for longer, how wonderful would that have been?
Would they have lost fewer people? Would Trolian have revived more quickly? Could those heartbreaking tragedies have been greatly reduced?
Therefore, Horus would never allow Rod to repeat past mistakes. If one day, the most powerful rising star of the battlefield had to retire to Jinworth Academy because of severe corruption, what a sad thing it would be.
Complex thoughts passed in a moment; Horus focused, realizing the most important thing now was the current mission.
Without exaggeration, the expedition to Horror Castle was deciding the future of Trolian. Human strongmen must be like a sky full of stars to reduce the possibility of corruption; only one sun is destined not to last long, sooner or later it will become a black hole.
He arrived at the center of the cave, where there was a pit several thousand yards long, with a spiral stairway leading deep into the unseen depths.
"Go down."
Horus said.
"Below is the Abyss."
The four donned the "Abyss Blade" simultaneously, and strange light enveloped them, instantly repelling the abyssal aura.
Peibela said, "I won’t die, I’ll go first."
She didn’t use the spiral stairs but jumped directly into the pit.
Then came Qingyu, Horus, and finally Rod, who was forcibly placed last because he was the youngest.
"Really."
Rod grunted.
"Even at this point, they always treat me like a child. One day, I will put you all under me, using my broad, thick, safe, and handsome back to shoulder everything for you."
The cold wind hit him in the face, this descent was so long that Rod began to question his life. The darkness seemed endless, and the abyssal aura thickened at a previously unseen speed. Every time Rod thought it reached its limit, it quickly broke through again, becoming even more terrifying.
With a few cracks, the Red Tear Stone shattered, indicating that the pollution here had exceeded its tolerance level.
Qingyu lightly snapped her fingers, and flames rose on everyone’s bodies.
Four sparks plummeted at unimaginable speed, and Rod sharply noticed that gravity had changed strangely. After surpassing a certain limit, it skyrocketed, as if a much thicker earth unfolded before them.
Bang, bang, bang, bang!
They didn’t know how long it had been, but the four meteors struck the ground. The enormous recoil made Rod’s limbs tingle a bit, yet the earth beneath only slightly sagged, showing just a few cracks.
"Is this... the true abyss?"
Rod stood up, feeling as if his body weighed several tons, his movements becoming somewhat sluggish.
Horus said solemnly, "Yes, we have arrived at the true abyss, the original, primordial abyss plane, not the material world space that sinks into the abyss."
"Time..."
Peibela murmured softly with her eyes closed.
"Time is strange; its flow is chaotic. Abyssal time is different from the material world."
"Space is different too."
Qingyu gazed at the transparent cracks in space, where chaos storms brewed beneath instead of void: "We must be cautious, not to fall into the space fractures, or it would be more than lost in the void; it may obliterate both form and soul."
Rod glanced around; this was a dark and gloomy earth, barren except for scattered stones, with an oppressive darkness resembling gravity, black fog drifting in strands, mixing with abyssal aura.
Alan’s blessing protected them from this dreadful erosion; even before the violent abyssal aura, the black fog seemed gentle, yet carried a more insidious and treacherous feeling.
"Black fog and the abyss must have some connection."
Rod thought.
In his mind, the Book of Knowledge shouted, "Master, the Ghost King is about to hatch; they have sensed the abyssal aura and are already stirring."
Asa also appeared very excited, "Ah, the abyss, where the oldest excrement is rumored to be hidden, perhaps I can gain greater power from it!"
For some reason, Rod felt his anxiety lessen a lot after hearing Asa.
"Let’s go."
Rod took out the Star Disk, the guidance from the stars remained effective even in the abyss.
"According to prophecy and the clues provided by Liszt, Horror Castle is in this direction." 𝕗𝐫𝐞𝕖𝕨𝐞𝗯𝚗𝕠𝘃𝐞𝚕.𝐜𝗼𝚖
Horus gave him a surprised glance, incredulous to find that Rod was more adapted to this place than himself.
Peibela praised, "No wonder he’s the strongest rising star."
Qingyu chuckled, "The abyss is in the deepest part of the sewer; for little Rod, the deepest sewer is still a sewer."
Her words drew laughter and quickly dispelled the tense and oppressive atmosphere.
Rod glanced at her disapprovingly, but for some reason, since she spoke, he felt more adapted to this place. He held the Star Disk, opened the Eye of the Soul, and walked at the forefront of the team.
The abyssal space had certain splits and fractures; sometimes, walking direction would suddenly change. Yet Rod always keenly noticed this, quickly re-determined position, corrected direction, preventing them from getting lost in the vast darkness.
Moreover, there were many dangers in the abyssal wasteland. Rod observed lifeless lakes, swamps flowing with black water, sinking sand grounds, and even black flames suddenly emerging from underground.
In Troli, black fire is the most ominous existence. It is a special twisted product formed when Source Black Fog corrupts Holy Fire, possessing unprecedented horrific pollution and having a deadly corrosive effect on human souls, an absolute taboo.
Rod cautiously avoided them.
Horus sighed countless times, "Rod, thank goodness you’re here."
Even though he praised Rod, Qingyu seemed proud as if basking in glory, "That’s right, this is my chosen little Rod."
In Troli, besides Alan, they were the first to venture into the true abyss, and apart from pieces of information found in ancient texts, there wasn’t much experience to rely on.
Alan also hadn’t ventured deeply into the true abyss for long.
Without Rod, their journey would be extremely hazardous.
Peibela smiled, "Perhaps because of you, the King made the decision."
Rod smiled back, without responding, knowing that this was just the beginning.
Under the Eye of the Soul, the wasteland reached its end; what awaited them was a waterfall of endless darkness flowing backwards.
