Chapter 437: Chapter 328: Pausing the Advance

Doctor Du sent a single dog’s resentful glare, crying to the heavens, I’m just following the main group!

We’ll follow Wang Le and Gu’s route to the city center. If we’re lucky, maybe we can pick up their bodies halfway there.

Of course, I didn’t voice this thought. Doctor Du and Huang Zaijiang expect to find the ’normal’ Wang Le, but I don’t hold out hope.

Qinghan took ten minutes to decide to go to the city center. He said the situation in the Ancient City was more complicated than he previously thought, and even if we turned back, we might not be able to get out.

Huang Zaijiang wanted to rescue Wang Le but was equally curious, or perhaps he didn’t believe we couldn’t get out.

He said we had just successfully made it back to the city walls without any resistance and could have left then if we wanted.

Qinghan said that if the cowboy hat’s purpose was to lead us to the city center, it’s strange that when we refused, he didn’t obstruct us or even try to persuade us.

At that time, we hadn’t questioned his motives, so it seemed nothing. But now, with a new hypothesis, his response seems inexplicable. 𝙛𝒓𝓮𝙚𝔀𝒆𝒃𝓷𝒐𝓿𝙚𝓵.𝙘𝒐𝒎

"Do you think he’s certain we can’t get out?" Mike asked.

"He knows the Ancient City. Wouldn’t he know there’s a crack below the walls? Someone wanting to get out would at least attempt to go down and see if it leads outside," Doctor Du voiced Qinghan’s point of suspicion.

In terms of time, the cowboy hat stayed longer in the Ancient City than us; perhaps he knew about the transit lines when the city was still underground.

If that’s the case, it’s abnormal for him not to even try to stop us from leaving and let us go free.

Unless he knew that we’d certainly be unable to leave, ending up making a big circle and ultimately returning.

However, Mike doesn’t really believe Qinghan, thinks he’s overly suspicious and wrapped up in his own convoluted thoughts.

The truth might reveal itself when we reach the city center.

But we didn’t turn back to seek aid from the cowboy hat; instead, we followed Wang Le and Gu’s tracks, hoping to find them.

After walking for about ten minutes, fog suddenly rose within the city. Qinghan and I are very familiar with this fog; when the mist rises, evil follows!

Qinghan suggested we walk closer together, preferably staying within arm’s reach so we can grab each other, or at least each other’s backpacks.

"Professor Chen, why don’t we find a place to rest and wait for the fog to clear?" Huang Zaijiang said worriedly.

After the downpour, the sky remained as black as a cauldron bottom, showing no signs of clearing.

Fog descended upon the city again, pressing the atmosphere to the extreme; it felt like a black cloth overhead, while a layer of white gauze blocked the view. Leading us, Qinghan slowed his pace, fearing those behind couldn’t keep up.

"What’s up?"

I was walking, eyes scanning the buildings on both sides to prevent anything from suddenly springing out to attack the group, when Doctor Du suddenly turned his head to ask.

"Ah?"

"Didn’t you just call for me? Is there something wrong?"

"I didn’t call you," I hadn’t made a sound nor heard anything else.

"Then... maybe I heard wrong." Doctor Du turned back but knitted his brows tightly.

We walked more, not yet reaching the end of the street when Doctor Du turned again, first locking eyes with me, then looking around.

I was baffled by her actions, mimicking her in looking around, asking aloud, "What are you looking for?"

Her motion was quite noticeable this time, causing those ahead to pause, with Qinghan stopping first, followed by Mike and Huang Zaijiang.

"What’s going on?" Huang Zaijiang, quick-tongued, asked immediately.

"Didn’t you see anything?" Doctor Du didn’t answer him, instead, she asked me.

"No," the space between Doctor Du and me was only a backpack’s breadth apart; I was practically walking right on her backpack.

Her gaze roved over the small area between us. The space was so limited that even a mouse couldn’t hide.

"Did you hear or see something?" Huang Zaijiang, impatient, pursued his question when Doctor Du didn’t answer him.

"First, I heard Little Leng calling me from behind; the second time, not only calling, but someone even tapped me on the shoulder," said Doctor Du, prompting everyone else to turn their attention to me.

"I didn’t," I shook my head and glanced at Doctor Du’s backpack.
