Chapter 401: Chapter 311: Howls in the Night

Darkness is like a daily routine to me, and I agree with Qinghan’s arrangement. Although Mike is still dissatisfied, there’s nothing he can do.

Actually, staying on the rooftop and watching the stars is quite leisurely. In the nighttime desert, nocturnal creatures are rampant, but inside the Ancient City, it’s particularly quiet. Wang Le’s snoring is the only sound in the city.

Some people snore when they’re tired, which is uncontrollable. The others are also tired and are sleeping very soundly.

I’m ’listening’ for any movements around, to see if any other living creatures are approaching.

After midnight at 12, Qinghan gets up to take over the watch. The two of us can’t keep watch together, and only we know the reason. We told Doctor Du and the others that it’s because last time Lilith and the others were all affected by illusions, only the two of us were immune. So, to prevent the illusions that Mike mentioned, it’s best for the two of us to take turns keeping watch; if two people are on duty, there’s always one person who stays alert.

Actually, it’s because Qinghan and I are different in physique from humans; illusions are just a superficial reason. I think Qinghan also knows that after inheriting my bloodline, he might be immune to certain things, like insects.

Close to midnight at 12, the calm of the Ancient City was broken by a roar. No, that sound should be called a wail.

I listened to it twice and couldn’t tell if it was a human or a beast. Wang Le heard it too and woke the people inside. Actually, he didn’t need to wake them; they were sleeping soundly but would wake quickly at any noise.

The one even faster than them was the injured person with a fever. Before anyone else could speak, he wailed along with the noise outside. 𝙛𝓻𝒆𝓮𝒘𝙚𝙗𝒏𝙤𝙫𝓮𝒍.𝓬𝒐𝙢

I thought to myself, what’s going on? Is this some kind of code?

The sound he made wasn’t much quieter than the wailing outside. With such back-and-forth calls, if you had keen ears, you’d have already pinpointed our location.

I didn’t go down; I remained standing on the rooftop and identified the direction from which the wailing came.

Qinghan came out of the house, telling me to get ready for combat. I asked him, "Is it wolves?"

Qinghan seemed unsure, shaking his head, "It seems like everything."

When he said everything, he meant it seemed like both wolves and humans.

The rooftop offered a wide view, making it advantageous terrain, so I didn’t plan on going down. I prepared to stay up there and monitor the surroundings.

The houses around the city wall seemed unplanned, chaotic horizontally and uneven vertically.

Therefore, there were many blind spots in the view, and there were several routes that could bypass my surveillance and approach stealthily.

After those few wailing sounds, the Ancient City returned to silence, with no sound at all.

Doctor Du injected the injured person with a sedative, and before they slept, Doctor Du said the injured person’s fever had gone down and his condition had stabilized. But then, in the dead of night, he’s suddenly howling, which isn’t normal.

Qinghan asked Huang Zaijiang to tie up the injured person’s hands and feet. Tied hands and feet wouldn’t hinder his recovery.

His hands were tied in front, so they wouldn’t tear open the wound. Mike once again objected, not understanding why Qinghan would treat a severely injured person this way.

Qinghan explained to him that the person might be infected with some virus, like rabies. If he attacked someone, the ones close to him, which is us, would be unlucky.

Mike believed the injured person was simply startled or had a nightmare. Qinghan treating him this way was cold and selfish.

This was the first time I’d heard someone say Qinghan was cold, which I found a bit novel. In everyday interactions, he spoke little and showed few expressions. He might receive the critique of being reticent or aloof, but no one had called him cold before.

Qinghan was indifferent to Mike’s accusation. When Mike was about to untie the rope, I shouted, "Something’s coming!"

Mike was immediately distracted, grabbed his weapon, and gave Qinghan a long look. I watched from the rooftop through a hole I discovered a few hours earlier. The tops of the buildings in the Ancient City were pointed, round, and flat. The roof where we were was pointed. I crouched on the slope, looking through the hole at the people inside.

As I watched, I propped up my body with my hand and felt the hole’s edge, realizing the grooves and marks weren’t from natural collapse.

Taking a closer look, they seemed like claw marks, and the grooves were long and deep, definitely not made by small claws.

Could it be that the survivors in this house had been ambushed?

I said something was coming, not to deliberately distract Mike, but it was the truth.

They moved silently, but I caught a glimpse of their glowing green eyes. What kind of animal has glowing green eyes at night? Certainly not a harmless little bunny.
