The Informal Tomb Raiding Diary: She is the occupant of the tomb!-Chapter 374 - 302: Evading the Scorching Heat (2)
"Yes, it’s written in the report," Mike said.
The report indeed mentioned there was a Scorpion Cave. After a team entered, they were repeatedly attacked by scorpions at night. The wilderness survival expert in the team followed clues and found the scorpion’s nest. It was an underground rock cave, cool and with a spring.
Only the cave was full of scorpions, and to draw water, they had to kill all the scorpions inside.
They tried using solid gasoline, hoping to burn the scorpions inside or at least drive them away.
But the number of scorpions inside far exceeded their expectations; their fuel was almost out, yet scorpions kept pouring out.
Three people were responsible for burning the Scorpion Cave; two were overwhelmed by the swarm, but one, standing farther away, escaped early and had the chance to report back to the main force.
However, that night, they were attacked again by scorpions. Mike used the recorder’s original words to describe the scorpions: like a black tide, surging toward the camp, quickly engulfing the tents and people.
Only two survivors from that team remained, but they survived the scorpion tide and didn’t successfully return. When Mike led the team into this area, they found their bodies.
The records book was found on their bodies, but whether they died from heat or fed to the scorpions remains uncertain.
After Mike finished, Qinghan asked everyone’s opinion; Doctor Du and the other three had no objections, agreeing to go to the Scorpion Cave to escape the heat. It’s possible to fight the scorpions, but not the high temperatures.
Mike led the way, guiding us to a peculiar rock bottom.
The shape of this rock resembles a cloud, and under it, there’s a cave entrance with tool marks carved into the edge.
In other words, the original entrance wasn’t as large as it is now; it was expanded by previous explorers using tools.
Now I can barely crouch and squeeze through the entrance, but it’s a bit difficult for someone as tall as Qinghan and Mike.
I volunteered, saying I would go inside to explore. Mike immediately opposed, saying I couldn’t go in alone.
Doctor Du promptly said she’d go with me; our height was suitable among the team. I looked at Qinghan, waiting for him to decide. He knew my situation: encountering a scorpion swarm inside wouldn’t frighten me. But if Doctor Du went with me and survived, my secret would be revealed to her.
But if I were to speak up, it would arouse suspicion, so it was most suitable for Qinghan to speak up.
"Alright, you go ahead, be careful," Qinghan responded with a calm expression after receiving my gaze, agreeing promptly.
I thought, is he letting me expose myself, or not? Should I kill to silence her? Use scorpions to kill?
While pondering, Qinghan didn’t give me any indication, just calmly watched us enter the Scorpion Cave.
The initial path was exceedingly narrow, making escape difficult. We walked about ten meters, and the space inside suddenly widened.
This cave wasn’t as deep as the rock cave we stayed in before; it was closer to the surface. Yet, I didn’t feel any heat, extremely cool, though the smell wasn’t pleasant, given it’s a scorpion’s nest, previously scorched.
"Look," Doctor Du surveyed the area, not spotting any scorpions, but discovered a water pit in the cave’s center.
"Why aren’t there any scorpions guarding it?" I glanced at the ground, even looked up at the ceiling, not a single scorpion in sight inside.
"Let’s fill some water first," Doctor Du took out her already empty canteen, quickly walking to the water pit’s edge.
Around the water pit are rocks; from a distance, it appears as a water pit, though closer inspection reveals it resembles a well.
Because the water is noticeably clear, yet at a glance, the depth is untraceable.
"Be careful, there might be crocodiles," I jokingly reminded.
Though it’s unlikely for crocodiles to appear here, other creatures are possible; sources of water often attract small ’animals.’
"Ha, crocodiles? I’ve slain ten!" Doctor Du said proudly.
"Take care, better safe than sorry, don’t be careless," I approached her, keeping alert for any movement around while poised to pull her casually.
The rocks surrounding the spring are somewhat tall, and Doctor Du held onto the rope attached to the canteen, lowering it into the water, her upper body stooped. If a fish bit the canteen, she could easily be dragged into the water.
"Let go—" Doctor Du’s words cut short. Suddenly, the spring splashed loudly as something rose from the water, causing her body to lurch downward, getting stuck in her words.
