Chapter 310: Chapter 270: Suggest Changing Jobs (Part 2)

A battle in the corridor could be disastrous if it collapses; we’d be doomed too. But the enemy had no such concerns, seemingly not caring for their safety, only intent on wiping us out with blinding speed.

Boom—

A shell hit a building outside the corridor. We had barely dodged it in time, but only just. The explosion sent debris hurling into me; a fist-sized stone smacked my eyelid, and if it weren’t for my Vajra Body, the impact would have burst my eyeball.

The loud noise attracted the ’radiation potatoes,’ which swarmed toward the sound source. The squad emerging from the corridor were like emotionless shooting machines, firing at anything that moved, turning the ’radiation potatoes’ into mashed potatoes.

Zhaosi had ridden off on an electric bike and vanished, having just called this the Five Heavenly Girls’ first battle, only to leave me alone here.

The attackers didn’t discriminate; they shot at anything that moved.

But with Zhaosi gone, they needed to relocate her, and I saw someone in the squad holding a tablet.

She looked down at it from time to time, as if confirming something. I rolled into a drainage ditch, and with no moving target, they paused, awaiting orders.

The scenic area should be closed now, but with a few security personnel missing, they will surely send someone to search, or report to the police for investigation.

They managed to sneak in with weapons, quite a feat. Suddenly, the person in the squad turned and looked directly at my hiding spot in the ditch. This wasn’t a random glance; it was a very specific directive that had her lock onto this position instantly.

The second shell aimed for the ditch. They were set on killing without asking questions. But I was out of the corridor and had no more hesitations—Karmic Fire obliterated the shell and its barrel into mere dust.

The emotionless shooting machines finally showed a change in expression. The woman with the tablet raised her hand to stop a few subordinates who wanted to fire at me.

By this time, I was ready to unleash a green glow at them. If they loved shooting so much, who they hit shouldn’t matter.

"It’s you." The woman with the tablet turned around, our eyes met, and she expressed a slight surprise.

She recognized me, but I had no memory of her. After living so long and meeting so many people, without a memorable encounter, many would simply fade from my memory.

"And who are you?" I asked, jumping out of the ditch. When in doubt, just ask. I stared at the woman for a few seconds, still unable to remember who she was.

The woman rolled up her sleeve, revealing a mechanical right arm. No wonder she wore a glove; it’s a prosthetic.

"Do you remember?" Her gaze held a bit of hopeful anticipation.

"Oh... Bai... Yun." Upon seeing the arm, a memory flashed in my mind, along with a name associated with it.

"It’s me, you remember." Bai Yun seemed lost in brief recollection but soon pulled herself together, "Congratulations on regaining your freedom."

I opened my mouth to say thanks, but she held up a hand to stop me, speaking first: "I’m on a mission, please understand."

"I promised to spare Zhaosi’s life; I can’t go back on my word. Seems like you’ve completed your mission today."

"Is that so, I see." Bai Yun gestured for her subordinates to lower their guns and glanced at her tablet’s screen. "But my current superior isn’t so lenient; orders must be executed or lead to death in the line of duty."

Her tone was light, as if making casual conversation, but I knew she spoke only the truth.

She used to serve under Alan. During an assassination mission, her arm was broken, and the target she was trying to kill was me. I was the one who broke her arm, yet didn’t kill her, and even gave her a mechanical arm.

This arm was my year-end bonus. The reigning queen at the time was displeased with me, always assigning me ’junk’ she couldn’t use from her treasure troves.

I didn’t bear ill will toward Alan; my stance on her actions was neutral. Her sending assassins after me amused rather than angered me.

She truly was audacious, as if nothing could daunt her.

However, after she disappeared, her subordinates had a hard time. Before He Su took over, the rebels were tearing themselves apart, while dodging the Queen’s relentless pursuit.

The Queen loathed the rebels, capturing them meant brutal executions—either burnt alive or quartered, Bai Yun switched allegiance, effectively surrendering. Her new master had rank and influence, enough to make the Queen think twice, preserving her life.
