The Ice King's Little Trouble Maker-Chapter 638 - 600: Coming to the Door
After picking up Qiao Yuxian, Gu Yanjing didn’t return to the old house and headed straight back to Jingyu Garden.
He hadn’t been back for over a week.
Aunt Mei and Aunt Qin were very happy to see Qiao Yuxian, but seeing how she had suddenly lost weight made their hearts ache.
Especially noticing Gu Yanjing’s expression, the household staff were very concerned, but as Gu Yanjing didn’t say anything, they didn’t dare to ask.
After chatting with them for a while, Qiao Yuxian followed Gu Yanjing back to their room.
Just as they entered the room, Gu Yanjing’s phone rang.
Qiao Yuxian looked at him.
Gu Yanjing glanced at the caller ID, answered the call, and before he could speak, a voice on the other end shouted, "Gu Yanjing! Where are you?! I told you to come back and you’ve gone missing! It’s been so long without any sight of you!"
Qiao Yuxian listened to the old man’s angry voice, her eyes widened a bit.
"I’m at Jingyu Garden," Gu Yanjing replied.
The old man paused for a moment, his voice much softer: "Ah, you’re back? Have you seen Yuxian?"
"Yes," Gu Yanjing replied.
After acknowledging, the old man didn’t speak any further.
After a long silence, only the sound of his breathing could be heard through the phone.
Gu Yanjing didn’t speak either.
The grandson and grandfather remained silent over the phone like this.
After a while, the old man said, "Hang up then."
"Okay," Gu Yanjing responded softly without saying much more.
The old man directly hung up the phone on his end.
Qiao Yuxian had been watching him, and after seeing him hang up, she asked, "Grandpa didn’t know you were back? Did you go to the old house first?"
"I didn’t see him," Gu Yanjing replied.
Qiao Yuxian was puzzled for a moment. Went to the Gu Mansion but didn’t see the old man?!!!
Gu Yanjing gently touched her face.
Qiao Yuxian held his fingers, lowered her gaze, paused, and then softly said, "Gu Yanjing, I..."
Before she could finish speaking, her phone rang again.
Qiao Yuxian’s eyelashes fluttered twice, and she turned to pick up her phone.
Seeing Zhao Shimeng’s name, she was puzzled for a moment before answering the call: "What’s up?"
"I want to meet you," Zhao Shimeng said directly.
Qiao Yuxian lightly raised an eyebrow and said, "If there’s something you want to say, you can tell me now."
Gu Yanjing looked at her.
"I want to say it face-to-face," Zhao Shimeng insisted, "We can meet at your home."
Qiao Yuxian thought for a moment and said, "Alright. This afternoon at Jingyu Garden."
"Okay," Zhao Shimeng agreed and then hung up the phone.
"Who was that?" Gu Yanjing asked.
"Zhao Shimeng," Qiao Yuxian tossed her phone onto the wooden cabinet beside them and then leaned into Gu Yanjing’s embrace, saying, "She said she has something to tell me and wants to meet me."
Gu Yanjing stroked her hair.
With her face buried in his chest, Qiao Yuxian remained quiet for a while, then continued the conversation from before: "Gu Yanjing, don’t worry, it will be alright."
No one brought it up, no one mentioned it; the matter seemed sealed there.
But once mentioned, it tore a gap in the issue, and everything poured out.
Gu Yanjing slightly bent over, holding her tightly. As he lowered his head, tears fell directly onto Qiao Yuxian.
He kept his head down, holding her, all the sounds muffled in his throat, not wanting his emotions to affect her.
But Qiao Yuxian still sensed his unsteady breathing.
She held him, rubbing his back gently, and after a while said, "They won’t take my life. I still have what they want. If I die, they will never get it."
Gu Yanjing couldn’t utter a word.
Qiao Yuxian swallowed to ease her tight throat and continued, "Back when it happened to my grandfather, they probably couldn’t yet master the dosage of this poison and its progression speed. Now they likely have more precise control. According to their original plan, the time my poison acted was supposed to coincide with Gu Linhai’s successful family reunion banquet, and Gu Yao’s reacceptance into the Gu Family. If things went smoothly, the Gu Group should be nearly in their hands, and half of Capital City would be under their control."
But their plan didn’t go smoothly.
The family reunion banquet directly broke the line of Gu Linhai and Gu Yao.
Caught them completely off guard.
The people in the shadows are currently at a disadvantage.
If something truly happens to Qiao Yuxian, they are well aware that with Gu Yanjing’s strength, temper, and character, he’d rather destroy the Peace Pendant than let it fall into their hands.
So, those in the dark might be more worried about Qiao Yuxian’s health than anyone else right now.
"They will come to us," Qiao Yuxian said, "Don’t worry."
"And after they come to us?" Gu Yanjing finally uttered a sentence, though his voice was hoarse beyond recognition.
Neither the question itself nor Gu Yanjing’s voice allowed Qiao Yuxian to speak further.
They would come to exchange the Peace Pendant for the antidote.
But would Qiao Yuxian give it to them?
Only Qiao Yuxian knows where the real Peace Pendant is.
It is something everyone guards fiercely, and Qiao Yuxian would risk her life to bring peace.
Gu Yanjing worries about all this, worried that the poison will act too quickly, that there won’t be enough time, that nothing could be done in time.
"Why not stay in the hospital?" Gu Yanjing released her a bit, looking at her and gently holding her face in his hands.
Qiao Yuxian looked at his tear-filled eyes, her emotions instantly lost control. She slightly tilted her head, tears flowing from the corners of her eyes into her hair: "Staying in the hospital won’t help, it just won’t help."
Gu Yanjing wiped her tears away, "In the hospital, any issues could be addressed more promptly."
Qiao Yuxian shook her head, her face and neck turning red from crying, choking out, "I don’t want to stay, I don’t want to stay. I don’t want to be examined every day. I don’t want to lie in a hospital bed all day, don’t want to undergo biopsies, or use various machines, I don’t want to."
Gu Yanjing’s tears fell again.
Qiao Yuxian continued to cry and shake her head, "Gu Yanjing, if this poison has no antidote, I don’t want to endure so much before I leave."
Gu Yanjing couldn’t speak, his lips trembled uncontrollably.
Qiao Yuxian said, "I believe in Huang Qi, I really believe him. I don’t want to go to the hospital, I don’t. I still have many things to do, and I can’t be living in the hospital. Gu Yanjing, can I make this decision for myself, okay? Is that okay?"
"Alright," Gu Yanjing wiped away her tears, "we won’t go, we won’t."
Seeing him agree, Qiao Yuxian didn’t say anything further, leaning into his arms. Her emotions, once unleashed, spilled out entirely.
Gu Yanjing gently stroked her head with one hand, while using the other to soothe her back.
Neither spoke.
They didn’t know what to say.
They didn’t know what to do.
What should be done now to resolve the current problem?
After some time, Qiao Yuxian’s sobbing subsided a little, and she quietly said, "I’ve been standing too long, I’m a bit tired."
Gu Yanjing wrapped his arm around her waist, lifting her slightly and carrying her.
Holding her, he moved to the sofa, pulling out several tissues to wipe her tears.
Qiao Yuxian sniffed, placing her hand on Gu Yanjing’s face, her thumb caressing just below his eyes, "The fortune teller said I would live past ninety, so I think it’s fine."
"Yeah," Gu Yanjing’s eyes were as red as if they’d blossomed a red lotus on an iceberg, never having been so red before. He looked at Qiao Yuxian and said, "Everything will be okay."
"Yeah," Qiao Yuxian leaned closer to kiss his lips, then looked into his eyes, saying, "Gu Yanjing, you look very beautiful like this."
Seeing her getting mischievous again, Gu Yanjing helplessly chuckled and said, "I’d rather be ugly."
Qiao Yuxian kissed him again and said, "Don’t talk nonsense; my husband has never been ugly, just especially beautiful today."
Gu Yanjing smiled a little more, kissing her eyes.
