The Husband I Snatched Is Not Right!-Chapter 43: I’m Just Glad You’re Safe
The night gradually deepened.
Perhaps because of the fright during the day, Yu Tingwan did not sleep well at night. Trapped in a nightmare, her forehead was covered in sweat, and her breathing became rapid as she suddenly awoke.
Yu Tingwan curled up with her quilt, fear flickering in her eyes.
Images flashed fragmented before her eyes.
Paper money flew, cries and sobs echoed. The wind and snow swirled fiercely, bone-chilling and biting.
She saw herself in wedding attire, stumbling onto the street, seeking help from the Wei Family Army, who were carrying a coffin.
The sword at the deputy general’s waist was unsheathed, slashing through the air with a piercing cold light, directly aimed at her.
"Anyone who disturbs the general’s posthumous journey, dies!"
Yu Tingwan did not retreat in panic; the servants from the Dong Family behind her were the real wolves and tigers. Yet, they hesitated due to the presence of the Wei Family Army, not daring to approach.
The group in front of her was her lifeline.
Tears welled up in her eyes, and with a trembling voice, she knelt toward the coffin, tears rolling down her cheeks.
"This humble girl is forced by my aunt to be sold to the Dong Family’s elderly gentry as a wife. I shouldn’t disturb the general’s peace, but I truly have nowhere else to go,"
"The general has died, and the Holy Emperor couldn’t eat or sleep because of it, ignoring ministers’ advice, and was buried with prince’s honors. I heard that the people of the capital voluntarily posted white couplets and hung mourning flags, the whole country grieved."
"But in Ze County, the Dong Family, just across a street, has drums and gongs blaring today, holding a grand wedding feast. Ze County should have been in mourning, yet they ignored the general’s sacrifice, it’s nothing less than provocation!"
Wei Family Army’s members all changed their expressions.
What a Dong Family!
How dare they!
Not to mention them, even the court officials sent to retrieve Wei Zhao’s coffin looked increasingly displeased.
Ze County’s county magistrate was sweating, but didn’t have time to wipe it off.
"Someone, take this unknown woman away!"
Yu Tingwan looked at him coldly.
"Is the magistrate shielding the Dong Family or afraid the matter of Ze County will reach the Holy Emperor and cost you your official position, so you’re eager to seize me?"
No need for her to say more, the anger in the deputy general’s eyes could no longer be hidden.
He slashed the sword towards the magistrate’s shoulder.
"This sword was bestowed by the general during his life, and it should draw blood when unsheathed!"
"Ze County is such a small place, how can any disturbances not reach your ears?"
"Why did you do nothing!"
"Did you accept benefits, or think we wouldn’t linger, since the dead are like a snuffed candle, and therefore disregard the general?"
"The Dong Family deserves death, and so do you!"
The Dong family’s servants were so frightened, they kept retreating.
Yu Tingwan knew, she had gambled and won.
Then, she heard someone calling from behind.
"Wan Niang."
A light flickered in her eyes, she turned abruptly and saw Hu Dazhu running towards her.
Hu Dazhu’s eyes were bloodshot and haggard. It seemed he hadn’t closed his eyes since she disappeared.
Hu Dazhu, with trembling fingers, pulled her up from the ground.
"It’s okay, you’re okay."
"Everyone said you’d been taken by beasts, but I never believed. You’re not destined to have a thin life like your mother."
Behind him was Hu Yaozu, who had caught up.
Hu Yaozu’s caring eyes stayed on Yu Tingwan, without moving.
He hesitated, but in the end said nothing.
After suffering so much grievance, seeing Hu Dazhu finally broke Yu Tingwan’s defenses, she rushed into Hu Dazhu’s arms, tears gushing forth.
Hu Dazhu patted her back: "Cry, with your uncle here, no one can bully you anymore. Cry enough, and we’ll go home."
Yu Ting froze, slowly withdrawing from Hu Dazhu’s embrace.
"Uncle, how did you know I was in the county?"
Hu Dazhu didn’t dare meet her reddened eyes.
"Your aunt told me."
He didn’t mention the troubles, nor how he discovered something was amiss and pried open Mrs. Wang’s mouth.
Hu Yaozu hastily interjected: "Wan, this was my mother’s fault, Father has punished her, she knows she was wrong."
Yu Tingwan acted as if she hadn’t heard, just looking at Hu Dazhu.
She understood that Hu Dazhu had treated her like a daughter all these years. But she also knew just how much Hu Dazhu valued Hu Yaozu.
No matter how angry Hu Dazhu was at Mrs. Wang, considering Hu Yaozu’s sake, he wouldn’t divorce her, much less make the matter public.
How could she be more important than Hu Yaozu’s future and reputation?
Yu Tingwan wasn’t quite disappointed, just found it laughable.
She heard her own faint voice asking: "After all this, uncle thinks I can go back with you without any hard feelings?"
The scene abruptly cut off, but the sorrow and helplessness continued to spread in her heart.
Yu Tingwan let out a heavy sigh.
————
Time passed quickly, and in a blink, it was the wedding day.
Yu Tingwan got up early, planning to go to the Wei Family first and paste up various wedding characters. On such a joyous day, joy spread from her brows and eyes.
Hui Niang was busy preparing the banquet, she couldn’t handle everything alone, so Yu Tingwan planned to help in the kitchen after putting up the characters.
She was afraid her wedding dress would get stained, planning to change only when the time came for the ceremony.
But as she left the house, she ran into Aunt Wu who was looking for her.
Aunt Wu was puzzled by the red couplets on the Wei Family’s door, planning to inquire about it, but seeing Yu Tingwan coming out, she put that aside.
She pulled her into a corner, mysteriously.
"Wan Niang, can you really tell fortunes?"
Yu Tingwan: ...
She couldn’t.
The last time she warned the young bride from the Wu Family not to be offended, it was because of memories from a previous life.
But her memories were incomplete.
Facing Aunt Wu’s eager gaze, Yu Tingwan hesitated for a moment: "Hard to say."
Aunt Wu: "I’m asking for someone else, if it’s accurate, they’d give fifty coins!"
Upon hearing this, Yu Tingwan didn’t hesitate: "I’m very skilled!"
Aunt Wu rejoiced. Looking around, still uneasy, she pulled Yu Tingwan into an old house, lowering her voice to explain: "That child calls me aunt, but was married off by her stepmother early. She seldom visits her mother’s home, but with her biological mother’s memorial approaching, she stayed a night, and noticed something off with her stepmother, like she had morning sickness. At first, she thought it was nothing, as her father had died years ago. How could her stepmother be pregnant?"
She covered her mouth: "But her stepmother sneakily went to Sandun Village to seek a midwife and returned with several herbal packs. Sensing something amiss, she secretly grabbed a bit to ask Old Man Qian, only to find it was abortion medicine."
"Wan Niang, you could predict the Xu Family boy would harm my Xiu Fen, proving you’re gifted. This scandal isn’t easy to catch, you must help find out whose child it is."
Yu Tingwan: ...
Do people really think fortune-telling is divine?
Wait...
She might know who this stepmother is.
Matchmaker Liu.
The person Aunt Wu mentioned is Matchmaker Liu’s stepdaughter, Zhou Qin.
She knew!
The child is Zhou Qin’s grandfather’s!
After birth, it’s unclear if the child should call Zhou Qin sister, or Zhou Qin should call the child uncle/aunt.
Either way, it’s the Zhou Family’s blood!
Seeing Yu Tingwan’s strange face, Aunt Wu urged.
"What’s wrong? Hurry and predict."
"I dare predict, but you won’t dare to listen."
How filthy!
