Chapter 39: The Uninvited Guest

For the time being, Madam Sterling didn’t press the matter further. Instead, she hurried out the door and headed to the hospital.

The previous night, when Rachel Royce had been rushed to the emergency room, Florence Preston had been fraught with anxiety. She had called Rachel’s phone, but a medical staff member had answered.

Wendy Royce, Florence Preston, and Peter Preston had immediately rushed to the hospital.

Once they saw her condition had stabilized, Wendy Royce and Peter Preston finally went home late that night, leaving Florence Preston to watch over Rachel at the hospital.

Florence Preston hadn’t slept all night. Around four in the morning, she went home to prepare breakfast for Rachel before returning to the hospital room.

Rachel Royce was eating breakfast when she saw Florence Preston’s worried expression. "Miss Preston, I’m fine now," she said comfortingly. "Please don’t worry."

Florence Preston felt a surge of indignation on Rachel’s behalf. ’So a man who doesn’t love you can really be this cold,’ she thought. ’Even when you’re pregnant and unwell, he can still treat you with such utter indifference.’

As for what had actually happened between Rachel and Tristan Sterling the previous night, Florence didn’t ask.

Rachel Royce finished her breakfast.

A nurse came in to check on her.

Around nine o’clock, Madam Sterling arrived at the hospital room.

Rachel Royce was surprised to see her. "Grandma," she called out.

Seeing that Rachel looked reasonably well, Madam Sterling was relieved. But the first thing she asked was, "Is the baby alright?"

Rachel Royce shook her head gently. "The doctor said everything is fine now."

Madam Sterling breathed a sigh of relief. "That’s good."

"How did you suddenly end up in the hospital when you were perfectly fine?"

Rachel Royce lowered her eyes, silent, not knowing what to say.

Seeing this, Madam Sterling didn’t press her further.

Madam Sterling didn’t stay in the room for long. Seeing that Rachel was out of danger, she gave her a few words of advice on taking care of herself and then left.

During this whole time, she didn’t exchange a single word with Florence Preston.

This was also the first time Florence Preston had met the esteemed Madam Sterling. She truly carried herself like the matriarch of a great family, with an extraordinary air about her.

Although she was gentle with Rachel on the surface, her only concern was the child in her womb. Florence could also feel the other woman’s complete disregard for her.

’It makes sense, though. How could a small, insignificant family like ours ever catch the eye of a great clan?’

Fortunately, Rachel would soon be divorcing Tristan Sterling.

’But the poor child!’

Rachel Royce had, of course, noticed Madam Sterling’s behavior. The matriarch had reminded her several times to be a proper, virtuous wife and to serve Tristan Sterling well. Now, Rachel suspected that her grandmother-in-law was likely displeased with her actions.

’But it doesn’t matter anymore.’

Rachel Royce had to stay in the hospital for another day of observation.

「That afternoon.」

Julian Jennings and Joanna Sutton arrived at the hospital room.

Julian had learned that Rachel was in the hospital from a phone call with Wendy Royce, so he had rushed over to visit.

"Rachel, are you okay? How are you feeling now?" Joanna Sutton asked worriedly.

Rachel Royce smiled. "I might even be discharged later. Don’t worry, Joanna."

"That’s good."

Rachel Royce turned to Julian Jennings and said, "Professor Jennings, I’m sorry."

Julian had only been trying to help, but Rowan had been dragged into this for no reason. She felt truly guilty about it.

There was nothing she could do now, and this feeling of powerlessness was agonizing.

Before Julian could say anything, Joanna cut in. "What are you apologizing for? This has nothing to do with you. It’s purely Tristan Sterling looking for trouble. Even if it wasn’t this, he would have definitely found some other project to sabotage Rowan."

"And Suzanne Sullivan is no saint either. They should just put that Claire Ainsworth on a pedestal. All she knows how to do is cause trouble for others."

"..."

"Alright, Joanna. That’s enough."

Joanna had been holding it in the whole way over. She hadn’t wanted to start cursing, but once she started talking, she couldn’t control her anger and the insults just came pouring out.

Joanna shut her mouth.

Julian said, "The Wellspring acquisition will definitely be resolved. You don’t need to go to Tristan Sterling."

He could guess that Rachel’s sudden hospitalization was because of something she had said to Tristan Sterling.

Joanna immediately chimed in, "Exactly! Rachel, don’t you worry. Who’s afraid of that dog? There’s no way we’re losing to that scumbag Tristan Sterling—"

Julian shot her a look.

Joanna pouted and didn’t continue her tirade.

Rachel Royce couldn’t help but smile.

Now that things had escalated to this point, it was no longer just about the Wellspring acquisition. It was a capital showdown between Rowan and Cedarwood.

Just then, a knock suddenly sounded at the door.

Everyone looked over and saw Suzanne Sullivan standing in the doorway of the hospital room.

Joanna’s face instantly turned cold. "What are you doing here?"

Suzanne walked in, carrying a basket of nutritional supplements.

Joanna watched Suzanne warily the entire time.

Suzanne’s gaze fell on Rachel. Seeing that she was safe and sound, she also felt relieved. "I came uninvited. I hope you don’t mind."

Joanna said sarcastically, "You’re quite good at giving yourself an out, aren’t you?"

Suzanne glanced at Joanna without responding, then looked at Julian. "President Jennings, since you’re here, let’s step outside and talk."

Julian agreed.

After putting down the supplements, Suzanne stepped out of the room.

「Ten minutes or so later.」

Suzanne left the hospital and drove to Tristan Sterling’s company.

Julian returned to the hospital room.

Joanna asked, "Is she gone?"

"Yes, she’s gone. Were you hoping to have a chat with her?" Julian teased.

Joanna snorted. "Who’d want to talk to her? She didn’t even take her bad-luck gifts with her."

Julian glanced at the supplements on the coffee table. "Alright, don’t force your attitude on Rachel. These look like they could be nutritious for her. Miss Preston, you can ask the doctor if it’s okay for Rachel to have them."

Florence Preston said, "Alright, I will."

"So, what did you two talk about?" Joanna asked.

Julian replied, "She’s preparing to sign the acquisition contract with Wellspring."

Rachel was stunned.

Joanna was in disbelief.

"Did she take the wrong medicine or something?"

Rachel asked, puzzled, "Why?"

After Vanguard replied that the evaluation hadn’t passed, there had been no further news. It was clear they had tacitly approved of Claire Ainsworth’s actions.

Why would they suddenly want to acquire Wellspring?

Julian said, "She just said that she re-examined Wellspring’s files and that it meets their acquisition criteria. Although Suzanne Sullivan dotes on her sister, she’s not entirely irrational."

"So what, she can just acquire them when she feels like it and drop them when she doesn’t?" Joanna was still speaking out of spite. She was simply furious.

Julian ignored Joanna. "We’ll see what Vanguard says when they contact Wellspring."

Suzanne Sullivan arrived at Tristan Sterling’s company.

She entered his office.

Mark Chapman was still giving a report.

’Seeing him still busy with work, she realized he truly didn’t care at all about his pregnant wife.’

After Mark Chapman finished his report and left the office, Tristan Sterling looked at her and said coolly, "What is it?"

Suzanne walked forward. "So busy?"
