The Husband I Loved for Eight Years Never Loved Me-Chapter 35: Didn’t Call Her
Chapter 35: He Didn’t Call Her
Rachel Royce looked back at him.
Lisa Lawson hurried forward to get his slippers and took the black overcoat from him.
Florence Preston was just coming out of her room. Seeing Tristan Sterling had returned, she asked, "Have you eaten?"
Tristan Sterling grunted in acknowledgment and strode upstairs.
Rachel silently averted her gaze.
「The next day.」
When Florence Preston called Allen Royce, he told her that the other party was going to reassess Wellspring before deciding whether or not to sign the contract.
Hearing this, Rachel couldn’t help but feel suspicious. Usually, when something like this happened right before signing, it was just an excuse to back out. There was a ninety percent chance the contract wouldn’t be signed in the end.
It was clearly a last-minute problem. It definitely wasn’t an issue on Wellspring’s side. It seemed someone had interfered, causing the other party to have second thoughts.
This kind of thing was common in business competition.
Once a major corporation backed out of an acquisition, it would be incredibly difficult to find another suitable company and price.
Rachel wanted to go back and talk to her father in detail. Florence Preston couldn’t rest easy either, so they decided to make a trip home today.
Tristan Sterling hadn’t gone out today.
Rachel had to go and let him know.
She went upstairs.
He wasn’t in the study, so he must be in the bedroom. The bedroom door was open, so she walked in. The master bedroom was very spacious, decorated in cool tones. The style was minimalist, with every detail exuding a sense of luxurious sophistication. There were almost no superfluous decorations. Through the large floor-to-ceiling window, she could see a calm lake outside.
The man was in the bathroom.
He must have just finished a workout and was taking a shower.
Just as Rachel was about to wait outside...
...she heard the bathroom door open. She stood still. The man emerged from the bathroom in a navy-blue bathrobe, his hair half-dry with stray strands falling across his forehead. His deep-set features were as clean and sharp as carved jade.
When he saw Rachel, his eyes darkened. "What is it?"
Rachel snapped back to her senses. "I just came to let you know that Miss Preston and I are going home today."
Tristan Sterling said nothing.
So Rachel didn’t linger and turned to leave the room.
「An hour later.」
Rachel and Florence Preston arrived back at Rosewood Estate.
Peter Preston was also home today.
"Dad! Peter!"
Peter Preston looked at Rachel and said, "It’s been a while. Your belly’s gotten so big. You must be due soon!"
"Yeah, my due date is around the middle of next month."
Peter Preston nodded. "You need to take good care of yourself."
The hired housekeeper had lunch ready.
The family sat at the dining table, eating and talking.
The company Allen Royce was in talks with, Vanguard Properties, had its headquarters in Portington. Vanguard was backed by MK Group and had deep pockets.
The other party had been evaluating for over a month, and the negotiations had been going smoothly the entire time.
In any case, no one knew why they suddenly wanted to do a reassessment.
Listening to this, Rachel couldn’t help but worry. If this issue wasn’t resolved, she figured her dad and Miss Preston wouldn’t be in the mood for their wedding.
"Tomorrow is Monday. I’ll see if I can invite President Gold from Vanguard to lunch. Maybe I can find out what’s going on then," Allen Royce said.
Peter Preston said, "Alright, Uncle. If you manage to set it up for tomorrow, I’ll go with you."
Allen Royce grunted in agreement.
After they finished discussing the matter...
Allen Royce asked Rachel how she was doing.
Rachel said, "Everything’s fine with me right now, Dad. You don’t have to worry."
"That’s good."
That day, Rachel stayed at the Royce family home.
Back in her room, Rachel took out her phone and dialed a number. The call connected quickly. Rachel said, "Fowler, it’s been a while. How have you been?"
When Rachel had been Tristan Sterling’s assistant, she had contacts with executives from many large corporations. Cedarwood had a deep partnership with MK Group, and the "Fowler" she mentioned was a high-level leader at MK Group.
Due to their previous collaboration, when Fowler came to Kingsland on a business trip, Rachel had shown her around the city, wining and dining her. The woman was more than ten years her senior, but they got along quite well.
They had stayed in touch ever since.
But after Rachel was demoted, Fowler went abroad on business. The last time they had spoken was when Fowler found out about her demotion.
As for the reasons behind it, Rachel hadn’t explained much.
Fiona Fowler was surprised to receive Rachel’s call. She sighed, "Yes, it has been a long time. How have you been lately?"
The two chatted for a bit.
Rachel said, "There’s something I was hoping you could help me ask about."
Fiona Fowler didn’t refuse. "Go ahead."
Rachel briefly explained the situation.
Fiona Fowler said, "Alright, I’ll ask around for you on my end. I’ll get back to you with news tomorrow."
"Okay, thank you."
Rachel hadn’t expected Fiona Fowler to agree so readily.
After hanging up, Rachel left her room and told Allen Royce and the others about it.
Allen Royce nodded. "If we can find out the reason, we’ll have a better footing to deal with it."
Rachel decided to stay at the Royce family home for the night. She hesitated about whether to call Tristan Sterling and let him know, but in the end, she didn’t make the call.
’He probably wouldn’t care much anyway.’
And sure enough.
Tristan Sterling didn’t call to check on her the entire night.
Early in the morning, Allen Royce and Peter Preston went to the company.
Florence Preston stayed home with Rachel. Her family from her hometown had sent more nourishing foods, which she planned to prepare for Rachel’s lunch.
Vanguard’s President Gold politely declined Allen Royce’s invitation.
Now, all they could do was wait for news from Fiona Fowler.
It wasn’t until around five o’clock that afternoon that Fiona Fowler called Rachel back.
"Hello, Fowler."
Fiona Fowler said, "About the Wellspring acquisition—the President hasn’t signed off on it. Someone’s blocked it."
Rachel was stunned. So their president hadn’t signed it yet.
"Then who blocked it?"
Fiona Fowler said, "Gao Rui is in charge of the Wellspring acquisition. I heard from him that it’s because of our Young Miss."
Rachel frowned. "Your Young Miss?"
’So it really was blocked for personal reasons, not because of a problem with the company.’
"She was investigating Wellspring before. She probably found out about Vanguard’s acquisition and called Gao Rui. The Young Miss owns shares in Vanguard, and the President spoils her rotten. She’s the apple of MK Group’s eye. So Wellspring must have offended her somehow. You should ask your father if he might have done something to displease her."
’How could her father possibly have offended the Young Miss of MK Group? They’re not even in the same league.’ 𝒇𝓻𝓮𝓮𝙬𝙚𝒃𝒏𝓸𝙫𝒆𝙡.𝓬𝓸𝒎
"Then, Fowler, who is your Young Miss?"
Fiona Fowler said, "Claire Ainsworth."
’Claire Ainsworth?’
’Claire Ainsworth is the Young Miss of MK Group.’
’So she wasn’t having someone investigate Wellspring; she was secretly investigating my background.’
’In that case, she and Tristan Sterling really are a perfect match, status-wise.’
’No wonder Tristan dotes on her so much.’
Snapping out of her shock, Rachel said, "Then your president is Suzanne Sullivan."
"That’s right."
"Thank you, Fowler. I understand now. When you have time to come to Kingsland again, if I’m here, I’ll treat you to dinner."
"You’re welcome. But let me give you a heads-up, Rachel. The Young Miss grew up spoiled and doesn’t have the best temper, so be careful."
"Okay, I know."
After hanging up the phone, Rachel put it down.
