The Hunter's Odyssey-Chapter 51: The Bells of Judgment
A vast resonance rolled through the world.
Not a bell, yet unmistakably similar. A deep, ancient vibration like a colossal temple bonshō struck somewhere beyond reality. The sound did not ring so much as it spread, slow and weighty, passing through walls, bone, and thought alike. It carried no direction, no source. It simply was.
The atrium of Takashimaya seemed to bow beneath it.
Hunters froze mid-breath. Civilians clutched children closer. Weapons lowered without conscious thought. Even the rising tension between Shin Lu’s group and Jane’s squad faltered as the vibration pressed into their chests like an unseen hand.
Jagger felt it settle behind his ribs, heavier than fear, deeper than instinct. It resonated with the fading echo of Corrupted Surge still crawling through his veins. Around him, people stopped arguing, stopped shouting, stopped moving. Every eye lifted, not toward the sky, but toward the translucent screen that forcibly materialized before them.
Instantly, the system interface appeared, visible to hunters and non-hunters alike.
-
[System Integration has been completed.]
[Phase 1 of the Culling has been forcibly concluded.]
[New System Features are now active.]
[Global Quest: The Great Filter has been initiated.]
-
Rain lashed across a collapsed overpass several kilometers away, turning broken concrete into shallow rivers. A small cluster of survivors huddled beneath a tarp tied between fractured pillars. The system panel flared into existence before their faces, its cold light reflecting in wide, fearful eyes.
A young boy looked up at his mother, confusion trembling in his voice. "Ma... what is that?"
An older woman nearby stared at the screen, her lips trembling. "The bells of judgment have come," she whispered.
The mother’s gaze moved slowly between the glowing words and her son’s face.
She pulled the boy close, pressing his head against her shoulder as if she could shield him from something far larger than rain.
-
High above Seoul, on a rain-slick rooftop, a group of hunters burst into cheers the moment they read the words.
"We survived Phase One!" someone shouted, laughter breaking through exhaustion.
Another collapsed onto the wet tiles, head thrown back in disbelief. "We’re still alive. Holy shit, we made it."
Not everyone saw judgment in the message. Some saw proof that they had endured.
-
In Kuala Lumpur, a spear-wielding hunter froze mid-strike as the system interface flared before him. His weapon hovered inches from a monster’s throat.
"What the hell...?"
The creature lunged. He twisted aside just in time, snapping back into motion with a curse. Around him, hunters hesitated, distracted by the announcement.
"...Global quest?" an archer murmured.
A mage barely spared the screen a glance. Violet sigils spun around her hands as she completed an incantation, mana roaring through the streets. 𝚏𝗿𝗲𝐞𝐰𝚎𝕓𝐧𝚘𝘃𝗲𝐥.𝐜𝚘𝕞
"Focus!" she barked at her team. "The system doesn’t save you! Your will to fight does!"
Flames surged forward, devouring a charging horde as the panel hovered silently beside her.
-
Elsewhere in New York, civilians pressed together in the middle of an alleyway while monsters came from both sides, clawing at the edges of their defenses. Four hunters stood at the front line, blades drawn despite exhaustion.
The screen appeared before them.
One civilian collapsed to their knees, sobbing. "Please... let it end."
A hunter wiped blood from his mouth and tightened his grip on the hilt of his sword. "Not today!"
The monsters surged again.
"ARRGGHH!"
-
A few streets away, Hannah walked beside Sato through rain-slick pavement. The rest of the group was walking with them. The system panel materialized before her, its light reflecting faintly across her eyes. She slowed, fingers pressing briefly against her temple as a dull ache pulsed behind her skull.
"It started," she murmured.
Mr. Sato glanced at her. "Does it hurt again?"
"Just a little," she replied quietly.
She lowered her hand and continued walking, though something about the resonance lingered deep within her.
-
Far above a glittering skyline in Dubai, a man in an immaculate suit watched the message appear before him. He smiled faintly, swirling a glass of amber liquid.
"So, the next phase begins," he said softly.
Behind him, hired hunters adjusted their weapons.
"Let the weak fall away."
-
Back inside Takashimaya Mall, the resonance faded into a heavy, suffocating quiet.
The system interface hung before every face in the atrium, pale and absolute. Hunters stood frozen mid-step as if caught inside a photograph. Children clutched their parents’ clothes, eyes wide and uncomprehending. The Christmas tree lights flickered gently in the background, casting warm gold across a scene that felt anything but safe. Laughter that had once filled this space was gone, replaced by the soft rustle of breathing and the faint hum of overhead generators.
Jagger stared at the glowing words, his chest rising and falling in slow, measured breaths. Corrupted Surge had not completely faded. Heat still simmered beneath his skin, a restless pressure coiled deep in his muscles. Blood slicked the back of his neck where the wound had been, the newly healed flesh tingling as his soaked collar brushed against it. Every nerve felt sharpened, hypersensitive, as if the world had been turned up one degree too bright.
Beside him, Jane lowered her dagger a fraction of an inch. Her breathing had steadied, but tension still pulled tight across her shoulders. Her eyes moved constantly, calculating. The panel. Shin Lu. Kade. The hunters are circling the atrium. The threat had not vanished. It had only paused.
Lynis slowly lifted himself off the burly woman beneath him, though he kept her sword pressed firmly against the back of her neck. "Bro... what the hell is a Culling?" he muttered, eyes never leaving the hovering text.
Porpo’s Gale Trigger sputtered weakly before dissolving into nothing, the last green wisps fading from her fingertips as the system message stole her focus. Her shoulders sagged slightly. The fury that had burned moments ago dimmed into confusion and something closer to fear. She stared at the glowing words as if trying to read meaning hidden between the lines.
"PLEASE, SOMEONE HELP ME," the lanky man cried, writhing on the floor. "MY ARM. MY ARM."
"Shut up, Osman," Hector snapped, lightly kicking him aside. His voice carried irritation, but his gaze remained locked on the panel, brows drawn tight with thought.
Shin Lu stood unmoving between both groups. The cold light painted his face in pale tones, sharpening the scar that cut across his features. He did not flinch. He did not react outwardly. He read, absorbing every word with quiet intensity.
Across from them, Kade lowered his twin xiphos. The dark energy licking along their edges receded slowly until the weapons looked like polished steel. He did not sheathe them. His gaze moved from Shin Lu to Jane, then settled on Jagger with a raw hatred that had not cooled. The Global Quest had interrupted their fight, not ended it.
The system panel shifted.
New lines of text unfolded, each word heavier than the last.
-

-
[23 hours, 59 minutes, 47 seconds]
-
The countdown timer burned in stark crimson at the bottom of the panel.
An audible click echoed through the atrium.
Every weapon lowered at once, not by command but by shared instinct. The tense standoff dissolved into a wide-eyed dread that settled over the crowd like a heavy fog.
Jane’s knuckles whitened around her dagger’s hilt. "Targets remaining... fifty? Across all of Singapore?"
"And failure means they’ll grow way stronger," Porpo whispered, voice thin and unsteady.
"Eh, what’s a Herald of Collapse?" Lynis asked, tossing the sword toward the back of the store with a careless flick that betrayed the unease in his eyes.
Shin Lu finally broke his silence. His voice carried calm authority, cutting through the murmurs spreading across the atrium.
"Aiko, deal with the survivors. Help them through the process of their class awakening. Grab a few hunters to assist you." His gaze shifted to the surrounding fighters. "What are you all standing for? Get your weapons ready and get geared up."
Everyone flinched.
Then movement erupted.
Survivors began murmuring, then shouting. Panic rippled outward in waves. A woman cried out as the system panel flared brighter before her eyes. A man began shouting questions toward the ceiling as if the voice behind the system might answer him directly.
Aiko moved with sharp efficiency, herding civilians toward open spaces. "Everyone, please remain calm! This is a system function! We will guide you through it!"
Hunters rushed toward staircases, boots pounding against marble as they sprinted up to the second floor. Bags were grabbed. Armor adjusted. Weapons checked with grim urgency. The air filled with the metallic clatter of preparation.
Osman finally stopped screaming and limped toward the exit of the store, tears streaking down his face. The burly woman, Lynis, had pinned a rose slowly before him, dusting off her shoulders. She sauntered closer to Lynis and leaned in, whispering something only he could hear. His face flushed instantly, turning a deep red. Before she left, she gave him a playful wink that he returned with a flustered, helpless smile.
Shin Lu turned toward Jane’s group. "You four come with me. Hector, you too." He gestured toward Kade. "Bring your people."
Without waiting for a reply, he began walking toward the Rolex store, his stride steady and purposeful.
Jane and Jagger exchanged a look.
She studied him carefully. The crimson glow that had burned in his eyes only moments ago receded like a living thing unraveling from the edges of his irises, peeling away in thin strands before sinking back into the darkness of his pupils. His eyes returned to their natural brown, though something deeper lingered behind them.
"JANE! WAAAAHHH!" Porpo cried suddenly, launching herself forward and wrapping Jane in a bone-crushing hug. "I’M SO GLAD YOU ARE ALRIGHT!"
"Hey, hey. I’m fine," Jane grunted, patting Porpo’s back. Her gaze drifted back to Jagger as a few loose strands of hair fell across her face.
Jagger offered a shy smile. Heat crept up the back of his neck as Jane’s eyes lingered on him just a little too long. He flipped her dagger once in his hand, the motion smooth despite the fatigue weighing him down, then handed it back to her handle-first.
"Keep it."
Lynis clapped a heavy hand onto Jagger’s shoulder. "WALOU WAY! You really scare the shit outta me, lah. Bleeding like fountain still go punch people. You got guts, Sia, I give you that."
Jagger let out a weak laugh, though the tension had not fully left his chest.
"Oi chibai, what did that woman say to you?" Porpo asked suspiciously, pulling away from Jane and narrowing her eyes at Lynis.
He waved his hand awkwardly, refusing to answer, his ears still bright red.
Jane exhaled slowly and stepped forward, her posture snapping back into command. "Let’s go. We only have twenty-three hours left, and we need to prepare."
Her voice cut cleanly through the lingering shock, pulling their attention back toward Shin Lu as the reality of the Global Quest settled over them like an approaching storm.
