Chapter 469: Chapter 469: Apology

She’s been with the Sterling Family for so many years, and they’ve treated her well, yet she brought Sarah Sutton into their home.

And Sarah Sutton stole Paige Sterling’s husband; she was too ashamed to face Paige.

Nanny Sutton made chicken soup, grabbed Sarah Sutton by the collar, and took her to the hospital.

She thought Paige must have fallen sick from the anger over Sarah and Julian Hawthorne’s affair, and she wanted Sarah to kneel and apologize to Paige.

If Sarah didn’t apologize or break things off with Julian, she would call Sarah’s parents and have them take her back to their hometown immediately.

Though Sarah was cunning, her parents were honest folks. If they knew what Nanny Sutton was up to in the city, they’d surely drag Sarah back home.

Once back, Sarah wouldn’t have it easy; her parents could swiftly arrange a marriage for her.

Sarah hadn’t enjoyed much good life yet and didn’t want her family to come looking, so she had to comply with Nanny Sutton’s demands for now, while secretly planning to ask Julian someday to find her a new hiding place, believing Nanny Sutton wouldn’t be able to track her down.

If she had Julian’s child, everything would be settled, and even if her family found her, what could they do?

Nanny Sutton brought Sarah to the hospital just as Paige was waking up.

With tearful eyes, Nanny Sutton apologized to Paige, who seeing her guilt, said, "Nanny Sutton, I don’t blame you. It’s alright."

The more gracious Paige was, the more guilty Nanny Sutton felt, so she pushed Sarah forward, "What are you standing there for? Go on and apologize to Miss Sterling!"

Sarah immediately rushed to the bedside and knelt down.

"Miss, I’m sorry. I couldn’t control myself. I’m so sorry..."

Paige looked at her coldly; Sarah wasn’t even Nanny Sutton’s real niece. Nanny Sutton felt no affection toward Sarah and had due cause to dismiss her, thus showing Sarah no courtesy.

"What are you apologizing to me for?"

Sarah cried pitifully but without tears, her acting was unconvincing and absurdly fake.

So fake that Paige felt like throwing a clove of garlic at her.

But obviously, Sarah felt her performance was convincing, continuing her affected and sobbing act.

"I shouldn’t have accepted Mr. Hawthorne’s love. I shouldn’t have fallen in love with him, nor stayed with him, becoming his woman. I’m so sorry, Miss..."

After saying this, she lifted her face trying to prove her innocence, "But Miss, please believe me, I really didn’t intend to steal your husband. I had nowhere to go after leaving the Sterling Family, and Mr. Hawthorne took pity on me and arranged a place for me to stay. Us being together was because Mr. Hawthorne was drunk and momentarily confused. I’m deeply sorry and never wanted you to know. I’ve been hiding all this time, even though Mr. Hawthorne said he’d take responsibility. I didn’t dare agree because I know that’s wrong, and it would upset you, Miss..."

See, it’s my charm that captivated your man, not my fault.

But didn’t you see? Your man is so devoted that he said he’d take responsibility for me, but I didn’t agree. Didn’t I do right by you? What more do you want?

Nanny Sutton was infuriated by Sarah’s words, was this an apology or a provocation?

She was so angry that she slapped Sarah, "I told you to apologize properly! Speak with respect! Dare to upset Miss Sterling again, and I’ll beat you!"

Paige smiled, "Nanny Sutton, please leave us for a moment."

She was less worried about her own anger than Nanny Sutton’s escalating temper.

Nanny Sutton had to leave, but shot Sarah a warning look before exiting, "I’ll be just outside. If you don’t behave, I’ll call your parents and have them drag you back."

Sarah shivered slightly.

Once the door was closed, Paige, smiling ambiguously, asked Sarah, "Did you just say Julian wants to take responsibility for you?"

Sarah nodded blissfully, "Mr. Hawthorne held me lovingly and said he wanted to take responsibility..."

Paige shivered with disgust at her expression and said, "So how does he plan to do that? Buy you a small place to live, have you bear his child without a name or status?"

Sarah seemed to perceive contempt in Paige’s words and displayed a defiant look.

"Miss Sterling, we haven’t spent time together, so you don’t know me, but I can assure you, I’m not that kind of person. I never wanted anything with Mr. Hawthorne. Even if I deeply love a man, I wouldn’t become his mistress and wreck another’s marriage. But Miss, there’s no love left between you and Mr. Hawthorne; your marriage is merely an empty shell. With no love between you, Mr. Hawthorne fell for me; I’m not being a home-wrecker. Rather, I’m helping end a loveless marriage. You have to realize, even without me, Mr. Hawthorne would find someone else. I understand you still love Mr. Hawthorne, but as a favor to Nanny Sutton, I won’t make your situation as miserable as other women might. I’ll urge Mr. Hawthorne to visit you often..."

To Sarah, life now was something she once only dreamt of.

Does it matter whether she becomes Julian Hawthorne’s wife or not? So long as she can enjoy this life perpetually, she’s satisfied.

She didn’t mind being supported by Julian Hawthorne.

Of course, if luck favored her into marriage with Julian, she’d be delighted.

But she also knew very well that she couldn’t anger Paige now, so she had to placate her, assuring Paige they were on the same side, she’d help her, which would make Paige view her as an ally, thus sparing her.

They might even team up against Alisa, who was the real vixen here.

Paige chuckled, "Well, thank you for considering me."

Sarah thought Paige was forcing a smile, having been abandoned by such an outstanding man, how could she truly smile?

Anyway, giving up Julian Hawthorne, an exceptional man, she’d rather die.

If anyone blocked her path to fortune, she’d fight them fiercely.

She said, "Miss Sterling, I understand you might be unwilling, but when love’s gone, it’s gone; you can’t force it."

Seeing Paige silent, she continued, "I know what you think of me. You were born into endless blessings, having anything you desire, never short of anyone like Mr. Hawthorne. But I’m different; I’ve never had someone treat me as well as he does. I can’t help but love Mr. Hawthorne uncontrollably, craving for love is something Miss Sterling you wouldn’t understand, not having to love someone with all your might as I have. But unlike others, I won’t ruin your marriage even if he doesn’t want divorce. I’d even help you maintain it. Miss Sterling, consider my sensible demeanor and accept me? Even if not for me, consider the Sterling Family. If you oust me, what if Mr. Hawthorne retaliates against your family?"
