The Happy Farmer Wanderer-Chapter 728 Are You Playing Us?_1
The night deepened, and the barbecue stall, ablaze with lights, was filled with the smoky atmosphere of lively human life.
Initially, due to Jing Yan’s presence, Li Qing and Han Mei had decided not to open for business today.
But some regular customers called several times, urging them to open.
It just so happened that Jing Yan was also there at that time, and it was she who suggested that they keep the stall open, insisting that her presence shouldn’t disrupt their livelihood.
Left with no choice, Li Qing had to continue with the work at hand.
Jing Yan, insistent on helping, was assigned by Han Mei to the simplest task—just sitting there and watching was enough.
However, such a task naturally couldn’t satisfy Jing Yan, who would wiggle here and there, taking the initiative to work on anything she laid her hands on.
From time to time, she even stealthily showed off major tricks like teleporting.
The problem was, everything was fine until Jing Yan started to help; that’s when issues arose.
Her mix of ancient and modern speech, along with her unique manners, captured everyone’s attention in an instant.
Someone joked with a laugh, "Boss Han, your barbecue stall is becoming more and more exceptional. If you were to open this in the county town, you’d certainly be a hit. Having all these beauties around is one thing, but now you’ve even got a classical waitress. How do you expect others to compete?"
His voice immediately resonated with many others.
"Seriously, Boss Han knows how to run a business. Just for that ’Please enjoy your meal, honored guest’ from that beauty, I’d want to come here every day," someone shouted. "When have we ever been treated like this? Boss Han, your standard could match a five-star hotel now—it’s like you’re the great hermit hidden away in the village!"
"You’re talking about ’Please enjoy your meal, honored guest.’ Just now, that beauty asked me, ’Are you enjoying your food, sir?’ Damn, it was so freaking gentle!"
...
Listening to the diners’ banter, Li Qing silently covered his face.
You all must not realize a casual gesture from this lady could end your lives.
Ignorance is bliss indeed, daring to speak like that to Jing Yan—just listening to it makes me shudder.
But there was a sense of helplessness for Li Qing; the senior powerhouse, Jing Yan, was a bit too enthusiastic about helping out.
"Can’t even shut you up with food, why tease our family member?" Han Mei came out, wielding the tongs, and shouted loudly.
Everyone laughed but then stopped making teasing remarks.
Li Qing felt somewhat relieved. Such admonishments were indeed more effective coming from a woman; if he had stood up and said the same, these guys probably wouldn’t have taken him seriously, and might even have picked a fight.
Although their words weren’t really too excessive, just simple teasing.
But he was genuinely worried that Jing Yan might feel a cultural gap and thus get annoyed.
The eventful night at the barbecue stall finally ended after eleven o’clock.
Han Mei and Zi Ling cajoled and coaxed Jing Yan to leave first, with Li Qing staying behind to clean up.
Tian Yue’e and Yu Lan, along with a few others, also stayed behind.
The appearance of Jing Yan and Zi Ling stirred up their sense of shared enmity and piqued their intense curiosity.
"Our Qingzi is getting quite skilled now, eh? Brings women home and even scripts a storyline. I heard from Yue’er that this woman is an ancient being? Lived for many years and is very powerful, right?" Qin Wenjun leaned against the convenience store doorframe, taunting in a sarcastic tone.
Li Qing knew this situation would arise, which was why he deliberately stayed behind.
Explaining to just his sister-in-law wasn’t enough; he had to explain to everyone.
"You don’t believe it?" Li Qing asked with a smile.
Qin Wenjun snorted and retorted derisively, "Do you think we would believe that? Even if you’re making up stories, at least make them somewhat believable. This tale you’re telling, are you treating us like idiots? Come clean, what’s the deal with those women? No, those two women."
I guessed there would be such a scenario, Li Qing said helplessly, "Believe it or not, this is really true. Jing Yan is indeed very powerful—she might not be able to move mountains and fill seas, but she could probably slice off the top of a mountain with a slap. You really shouldn’t be so casual around her. Haven’t you seen how careful Zi Ling and I are when we speak in front of her?"
"Think about it, if these were ordinary women, would I behave this way?"
"Aren’t you just putting on a show for us? Once we get used to it after a while, you’ll reveal your true colors," Qin Wenjun said contemptuously. "Look at you, already four women around, and you’re still not content? Or do they have some tricks we don’t, which we could learn from?"
Li Qing looked at Tian Yue’e and the others sitting inside the convenience store, "Do you all feel the same way?"
Wu Xingxing pouted and said, "Brother Qingzi, we discussed this and agreed on our views; just come clean, okay? Otherwise, we won’t be obliging you in the future, nor will we satisfy those whimsical conditions of yours anymore."
"Come on, stop pretending," Tian Yue’e shouted. "Your sister-in-law indulges you and is willing to cover for you, but we’re not so easily deceived."
"If you don’t tell the truth this time, you could be looking at gaining two and losing four. Although I’d really hate to see that happen, with the way things are going with you, sooner or later, we’ll tire of you. If we don’t take the initiative to leave by ourselves, you’ll eventually force us away."
"What are you all thinking?" Li Qing had to get serious, "You’re my family, how could I possibly force you to leave?"
"Alright, since you don’t believe me, I’ll just have to show you. But I have one condition: whatever you see next, you must keep to yourselves and not utter a single word about it, understand?"
With the way Qin Wenjun and the others saw things, Li Qing was compelled to reveal some real abilities; otherwise, even though they might not leave for real, there would surely be a myriad of resentments in their hearts.
"You’re playing it quite convincingly. Prove it to us first!" Qin Wenjun said dismissively. "If you can really prove something, I tell you, I’d be willing to stand on my head and eat that humble pie of yours, letting you in through the back door!"
"I’m very serious," Li Qing said earnestly, then suddenly looked at Qin Wenjun with surprise, "Hey, that’s not right, haven’t you seen it?"
"Seen what?" Qin Wenjun asked.
"That apricot tree, the lightning," Li Qing reminded her.
"Oh, you mean that apricot tree. But what does that have to do with that woman being ancient?" Qin Wenjun inquired.
"There are many wonders in this world. Just because you haven’t seen them doesn’t mean they don’t exist," Li Qing gestured dismissively, "Forget it, I’ll just take you to see for yourselves. But remember, don’t let this spread or we’ll face endless trouble."
"According to you, you’re no longer ordinary people, so how can you not make the connection?"
