Chapter 422: Enjoy It While It Lasts

As they got to the door, they saw a tall figure emerge from the car parked across the road.

Lauren’s eyes narrowed as she instantly recognized the person. "George? What are you doing here so late?"

"So because your boyfriend is back from the dead, you don’t need me anymore?" George asked casually.

"I was never dead, you..." Steffan started.

"Steffan, please," Lauren interrupted quickly. "Don’t take him seriously. He’s just being dramatic."

"Dramatic huh?" George smirked as he walked up to stand directly between them.

Steffan’s expression darkened. "And what do you think you’re doing?" Steffan shot out. Why was he always bent on becoming a stumbling block in their relationship? Can’t he understand that Lauren cannot love him?

"What does it look like I’m doing? Making sure you don’t take undue advantage of her vulnerability, of course," George replied coolly. "After all, you’ve been out of touch with real humans for so long."

"I ..." Steffan clenched his fists but swallowed his retort when he saw the look in Lauren’s eyes. He could only tolerate George’s antics because of Lauren.

"So why are you here, George? As you can see, it’s been a hectic day for me and I am exhausted. I don’t need any more drama."

"I need to speak to you. Alone," George said pointedly, his eyes flicking towards Steffan whom he expects would take the hint and disappear.

Steffan crossed his arms and moved to stand beside Lauren. "That’s not gonna happen. I can’t leave you alone with my woman."

George chuckled. "Don’t pretend you care more than I do. I’ve known her longer than you’ve even been aware of her existence."

"I don’t care if you knew her from the womb, the fact still remains that she’s my..."

"Steffan, George, please! I’m sick and tired of your bickerings. Can’t you two behave like the adults that you are, just once?"

Both men fell silent, exchanging stubborn glances before muttering in unison, "He started it."

Lauren shook her head helplessly, not knowing what to make of their behavior.

Maybe it’s time she told Steffan who George was to her. She only hoped that will go a long way to end, or at least reduce to a large extent their fights.

She crossed her arms across her chest as her gaze alternated between the two like a weary parent before settling her gaze on Steffan.

She took a breath. "You know I love you, sweetheart and I wouldn’t do anything you wouldn’t like, right?."

Steffan’s jaw tensed, but he gave her a reluctant nod, sensing he was about to lose this round.

"I believe George must have something important to say if he’s come by so late. Let me hear him out," she said softly, hoping her words would ease the tension.

Steffan hesitated, then sighed. "I understand you want me to leave. If that’s what you want, I will leave but... you had better have a good explanation for this the next time we talk."

"Alright, love. Thanks for your understanding," Lauren murmured, offering him a small, grateful smile.

But before Steffan turned around to leave, he reached out and pulled her into his arms and captured her lips in a deep kiss that left her breathless. By the time he released her, they were both panting. "I love you," he whispered into her ears.

With eyes gleaming with affection, Lauren smiled up at him. "I love you more. And, thank you for tonight. It was perfect."

Steffan smiled, brushing a stray strand of hair behind her ear. "Every moment with you is perfect, Lauren. I’ll see you tomorrow."

With one last kiss, he let her go and walked back to his car, not for once did he spare George another glance.

Lauren watched him get into the car and drive away before tearing her gaze away.

Seeing the contented smile dancing around Lauren’s lips, George sneered. "You really love him, don’t you?"

"Absolutely," Lauren said without hesitation, not bothered about George or his jealousy.

"Enjoy it while it lasts," George drawled.

Lauren’s smike slowly faded as it got replaced by a frown. "And what’s that supposed to mean?"

"Just that life is unpredictable. Who knows what could happen to him next, and he might forget all about you again, like before."

"Nothing’s going to happen to him," she snapped. "You’re just jealous."

George let out a quiet chuckle. "Maybe. But for now, let’s not get into that."

Lauren’s smile returned, though with a sharper edge. "Well, just so you know, our wedding is happening sooner than you think. And nothing’s going to stop it this time. I can’t wait to become Mrs Steffan Rosse," Lauren said with a dreamy expression.

"Don’t make it look as if he is that awesome."

"Of course he is. No one can compare with my darling Steffan... not even you," she added mischievously.

George couldn’t help but find her behavior childish, yet amusing. He always loved this side of Lauren. That’s why he’d give anything to always draw her into an argument. "You know you’re lying, but I’ll let that go."

"You don’t have a choice anyway," Lauren said as she opened the door to her apartment.

She flipped the switch on and the apartment lit up.

"Help yourself to whatever you need. I don’t think I’m in the mood to serve you tonight." And while you’re at it, make me a cup of coffee... the type I like," she said and sank into the plush couch, flinging her high heeled sandals off lazily not caring which direction they chose to land.

George wordlessly moved to the kitchen, making her a cup of rich, caramel-flavored coffee, slightly sweet with just the right hint of bitterness. He grabbed some biscuits for himself and returned, settling into the seat opposite her.

Lauren took a sip, her eyes watching him. "So, why are you really here?"

George leaned back as his expression shifted to something more serious. "I got a call earlier...from one of Dolly’s friends."

Lauren’s brow furrowed. "Dolly? You’re still in contact with the snake?"

"I said one of her friends," George patiently explained.

"Which of them?" Lauren turned the cup in her hand as her brows arched in thought. "Is it the one you crashed the party with and barely dated for a week? What was her name again..."

"Isabella," George supplied.

"Yes, Isabella. So what does she want from you? Is she begging to come back or threatening your ass off if you don’t, and you want me to come to your rescue again?"

"You have such a rich imagination, Ren?"

"Would you blame me?" Lauren asked in a challenging tone. And without waiting for George to respond, since he obviously had none, she answered herself. "Of course not."

"So what is it you want me to do this time about Isabella or did something happen to her?"

All of a sudden she gasped and placed a hand over her mouth. "Is she pregnant with my little cousin?"

Speechless, George just stared at Lauren in awesome wonder.

When he saw her frown, he sighed helplessly. "She called to tell me about Dolly," he eventually said.

"Dolly? She’s in police custody. Does she want you to help her with her release? That’s not happening, and you know that."
