Chapter 38: She Is The Only Antidote For Your Illness

There were so many reasons why Shawn didn’t want Kathleen to know about his sickness.

"She is very angry and disappointed in me because of the way I handled the situation back then."

"Come to think of it," Steffan drowned the rest of his coffee. "You never told me how you handled the situation, because if it’s just a case of being set up, you’ve found out the truth and she should be grateful to you that you have been able to prove her innocence."

Shawn bowed his head and exhaled deeply.

"Back then, I didn’t give her any room to explain or prove her innocence but outrightly demanded for a divorce."

"What? You never told me that," complained Steffan. "Is that why you’ve not been able to get over her supposed death? I get it now."

He nodded his head in understanding. "You felt you pushed her to her death and have been living in guilt all these while." Steffan analyzed.

Shawn gazed at his friend, and praised, "you sure are worthy of being a doctor. I just told you a few things and you instantly saw through everything."

"Thanks man, but how could you be so irrational back then, it is quite unlike you to be impulsive. The Shawn that I know would critically analyze everything before making a decision. And to think it was something as sensitive as divorce."

"I know. That’s a step I will live to regret for the rest of my life. As it stands, I don’t know when or worse still, if she will ever forgive me."

"Don’t you think this is a good opportunity to get her back?"

"What do you mean?"

"I mean, you, playing the sympathy card using your health."

"She has already lost faith in me, and I don’t want to do what will further deteriorate our relationship. I hope one day she will forgive me and probably have me back, but for now, I want to take things slow and try to gain her trust first."

"But it’s not outright deception, at least it is a fact that you do have a psychological condition which was triggered by her absence, hence she is the only antidote for your illness."

With Steffan analyzing the situation like that, it made sense, but Shawn’s only fear was that it might not be so easy to convince Kathleen. She was no longer the lovey-dovey wife he married seven years ago. He was reminded of what happened in the elevator and how Kathleen twisted the whole truth. She is now so matured and calculative that she can twist anything to suit her purpose.

I have to look for a better plan to get her to agree without using deception, Shawn concluded within himself.

The brief silence that ensued between them was broken by Johnson who rushed in, a wide grin spread over his normally deadpan face.

"She replied!" he exclaimed, extending his iPad towards Shawn.

Both Shawn and Steffan were speechless, they have never seen Johnson this enthusiastic in all his years of working as Shawn’s assistant.

What could be the reason for such joy, that even Shawn’s glare could not douse one bit.

"Calm down and tell us why you are over the moon with excitement. Who replied? And to what?" Steffan asked.

There was a sparkle in Johnson’s eyes as he tried to control his breath then he announced,

"Dr Janice, she replied to the email. Remember you sent her another email this afternoon after you left old Mrs Hudson at the hospital?"

Shawn sprang up from the couch and grabbed the iPad from Johnson, finding his explanation too good to be true. He needed to see the email for himself to believe.

Steffan hurried over to sit beside Shawn on the couch and leaned in to see what was written in the email.

Clearly displayed on the screen was,

"Hello, I would like to sincerely apologize for the late response, it wasn’t intentional. I have gone through your application and I will be glad to carry out the diagnosis and also commence treatment. When and where can I meet the patient?"

"Dr Janice W."

There was an instant adrenaline rush coursing through Shawn’s body.

"This is unbelievable!"

He dropped the iPad and grabbed onto Steffan’s arms, shaking it vigorously,

"She has agreed, she accepted to treat Nana, Steffan. This is great news," he screamed as his cold eyes began to tear up and his voice broke with emotion.

Steffan’s heartbeat was also racing and he was speechless. This is a major breakthrough for them, after so many years of waiting.

"Quick, reply to the mail immediately." Steffan urged after he recovered from his shock.

"Right away." Shawn sat back down on the couch and personally replied to the mail,

"Thank you for your response. The patient is presently admitted at Medstar hospital in Baltimore and we would love to receive your services as soon as possible."

"Please, If you don’t mind we would love to know your present location and when you are coming so that proper arrangements can be made for your visit."

"Once and again, thank you."

After sending the mail, his eyes were still fixated on the part where the doctor said she will commence the treatment.

The joy bubbling within him was beyond measure. His grandmother will be saved at last.

"This is the best news I have received in ages. Steffan, let’s head to the hospital now. We need to inform Nana about the new development."

"That’s right. Will she come over to the hospital or you need us to discharge your grandmother so she can be treated at home in an environment that she loves and is comfortable in?"

"Wherever Dr Janice wishes to use is fine with me. The Hudson manor is also a good place since it has been equipped with some medical care facilities to suit Nana’s condition these last few years."

They headed out in high spirits, there were no traces of Shawn’s previous attack from his long strides and lively gait.

"Johnson, clear all my schedule for the weekend. I have to be free to receive Dr Janice whenever she’s ready to see Nana."

"It will be done, Boss."
