Chapter 34: Is There Anything I’m Supposed To Know About, Mummy?

Kathleens phone rang at that moment, interrupting them. She stopped and fished out her phone from her bag and saw it was a call from Eleanor. She stood up from her seat and informed Shawn, "Excuse me, I have to take this call."

A lovely smile spread across her previously angry face as she swiped the screen to accept the call. "Hello honey," she said making her way from the table.

At the word "honey", Shawn felt a jolt of anger in his chest and he stared fixedly at Kathleen’s happy expression. Her eyes which had remained cold while speaking with him were now filled with so much love that Shawn burned with jealousy.

He was sure the one on the other end was her lover, for her to be so happy and relaxed. She has never smiled so sweetly with him the way she did with that person since she came back.

In the past, that smile belonged to only him.

"Has she truly stopped loving me and was really acting like she said?"

His jealousy was eating deep into him at each fleeting thought.

To avoid doing something drastic and end up regretting it, he stood up, walked up to the barista’s desk, dropped a wad of dollar bills on it, then stormed out of the shop.

From where Kathleen stood she could clearly see his straight back and dark expression as he stormed out of the coffee shop. "What’s up with him?" she wondered. "Anyway whatever it is, is none of my business." She concentrated on the call and heard Elvis urging Eleanor to hand the phone over to him.

"Can’t you see I’m still talking to mummy?" Eleanor asked.

"There’s no need to quarrel over this, children, I’ll be back home soon then we can talk. As a matter of fact mummy has something to discuss with you both.

Now Eleanor, pass the phone to your brother, let me speak with him briefly.

"Mummy, what do you want to tell us?" Eleanor inquired the moment she heard that.

"That’ll be until I get home. It’s not something we can discuss over the phone."

"But you’ve been away for so long mummy," she complained in the mouthpiece.

"Patience my dear. Once I’m done with my work here, I’ll head home immediately. Moreover I came home but was informed by Mrs Carr that your were sleeping."

"Why didn’t you wake me up mummy?"

"That’s because you were sleeping like an angel when I got to your room and didn’t have the heart to disturb your beauty sleep. And then something urgent came up and I had to rush out again." Kathleen explained patiently. "Now be a good girl and give the phone to your brother."

"Ok mummy, but you have to hurry up with your work so that you can come home soon. We can’t wait any longer"

"That’s enough, Eleanor, hand over the phone, I also need to speak with mummy."

"I love you mummy."

"I love you too my princess."

"Hello mummy," Elvis greeted the moment he got the phone. "How has your day been?"

"It’s been fine, love, and yours?"

"Great, Mummy. But please, don’t exert yourself too much, if you are tired come home to rest."

An inexplicable warmth spread over Kathleen’s heart at her son’s concern.

"I will, love. Once I tidy up here, I will return home immediately."

"We will be waiting for you to come back mummy and be more careful on the road this time around."

Kathleen was taken aback, and wondered if Elvis knew anything about the attempt on her life.

"Elvis, is Eleanor still there with you?"

"No mummy, I guess she has gone to the kitchen to see the cook. I remember her saying something about helping the cook bake a cake."

"Good." Kathleen’s reduced her voice low enough for only Elvis to hear. "Elvis, tell me sincerely, do you know something."

Feigning ignorance, Elvis threw back another question, "is there anything I’m supposed to know about, mummy?"

"Em, not really, but why did you tell me to be more careful this time?"

Elvis gasped and covered his mouth with his small hands and quickly tried to cover up. "Oh that?" he paused to buy more time.

"I was just expressing my concern for you mummy. We wouldn’t want anything to happen to you. You know you are very beautiful and if you are not careful, some handsome guy might kidnap you to himself since he can’t win your heart easily."

Kathleen laughed out loud over the phone almost shedding tears in the process. "You are getting better at your glibness. That’s why you need to grow up fast so that you can protect mummy from those men with ulterior motives."

Elvis breathed a sigh of relief for successfully diverting his mom from probing further, he almost gave himself away. There was no way he was going to tell her that he overheard the conversation between Ms Cheryl and her.

"Definitely mummy. I will grow up fast and ward them all off."

’But does Mummy really need someone to protect her. They should even be watching out for what might happen to them if they cross mummy’s path.’ Needless to say, Elvis did not say this out loud.

"Good. I have to go now, baby, take care of yourself and your sister."

"Bye mummy, I love you."

"Love you more, sweetheart."

She ended the call and headed back into the hospital, Fortunately, Shawn was no where in sight to pester her so she could go about her business without having to worry about Shawn’s interference.

She went straight to the emergency ward to check on the man again.

When she got there, the chieff doctor was already there. However the man showed no signs of waking up yet. 𝕗𝐫𝐞𝕖𝕨𝐞𝗯𝚗𝕠𝘃𝐞𝚕.𝐜𝗼𝚖

The doctor told Kathleen, " You don’t need to stay if you have other things to deal with. We will notify you as soon as he wakes up. But I will need a number to contact you on if you don’t mind."

"That won’t be a problem." Kathleen wrote down her number. "I believe I can trust you not to disclose it to others."

"Sure," the chief doctor hurried to say.
