Chapter 264: Twists of Fate

When she got outside, she met Dr Martin at the door and she gave him a disapproving look.

"I thought I asked you to take some time to relieve yourself. Why are you back so soon?"

"I’ve been refreshed Ma’am. Thanks for your thoughtfulness," Dr Martin replied. He was still surprised how she could still think of someone else’s well-being when her loved one was lying in an emergency room.

"That’s alright," Kathleen said resignedly. "You can go in and keep watch over him. He just woke up briefly but went back to sleep."

"What"

"What! That is great news!"

Johnson was not the only person that exclaimed when the news of Shawn regaining consciousness was broken by Kathleen.

"I need to spend some time with my friend, but notify me immediately if he wakes up again," Kathleen instructed.

"Yes, Ma’am," Dr Martin replied before heading inside.

Kathleen’s gaze settled on Johnson who looked haggard and in desperate need of rest.

"Everything is fine now, Johnson. You can go home and have some rest. I’m sure you wouldn’t want your boss to see you this way when he wakes up again."

Glancing at the bodyguards who were standing at strategic places, she added, "Moreover, there are enough hands here to take care of things if the need arises."

"Yes Madam," Johnson nodded enthusiastically. He knew the last person his boss will think of when he wakes up will be him, especially now that his wife was by his side. But he still had to ensure he comes back in good time. Afterall he had not yet seen his boss after he was wheeled from the theatre in the wee hours of the morning.

After Johnson excused himself and left, Kathleen was left alone with Lauren who was staring at her with a worried expression.

"Kathleen," she called gently.

"Lauren," Kathleen responded, took her hands and led her to the empty seat in the corridor.

"I’m afraid we can’t go in. I hope you don’t mind if we sit here to talk," Kathleen said.

Lauren nodded in understanding. "I’m Ok with that."

She was here to give her friend some moral support as she understood it would not be possible to see Shawn who was in the emergency room.

Apart from that, she had been wondering what could have happened when she had called Kathleen early this morning and Kathleen told her she had spent the night at the hospital with Shawn.

Kathleen was unable to conceal the exhaustion from her voice and the first question that came out of Lauren’s mouth as they sat down was,

"How are you, Kathleen?"

"I’m fine."

"You look like you need rest desperately. Why don’t you go home and take some rest. I heard you say just now that Shawn had returned back to sleep after regaining consciousness and I guess that means he is out of danger, right?"

"Yes, you are right, Lauren. But I still need to hang around for some time."

"Why is Shawn in the emergency ward. What happened to him?"

Lauren was her best friend for years and Kathleen did not see the need to hide anything from her.

Kathleen sighed and released a deep breath. "He got shot while trying to save me."

"What!" Lauren screamed, but fortunately, Kathleen had anticipated this response, so before her scream could shatter the peace of the ward, she had already clasped her palm over Lauren’s mouth and the scream only came out as a muffled sound.

"What!" More conscious of her surroundings, Lauren repeated in a fierce whisper when Kathleen’s palm left her mouth.

"What happened that Shawn tried to save you and from whom was he saving you?"

"It’s a long story, Lauren. But the long and short of it is that, I was kidnapped from the airport yesterday, and Shawn came to my rescue and took the bullet that was aimed at me. That’s how he ended up here."

"You can’t be serious, right?" Lauren uttered with a stunned expression, despite seeing the obvious staring her in the face.

"What is not serious about this whole environment?" Kathleen couldn’t help but sneer.

"I know," Lauren said. "It’s just that it is unbelievable. How do you think I would imagine such a twist to happen in my friend’s life when it’s not a movie. It’s only in the movies one gets to see this."

"Well my life had been full of twists from day one," Kathleen said in resignation.

"First it was me finding out that the only family I had, turned out not to be my real family."

"And when I was wallowing in despair, Shawn came as a Prince in shining armour to end my loneliness. Nobody would have imagined that the "poor orphan" picked from the gate of an orphanage home would end up getting married to the most eligible, handsome and youngest billionaire in Baltimore."

"As if that was not enough, I was framed and banished from my husband’s house and barely survived a plane crash that claimed several lives."

"I ended up receiving the news that I was pregnant with two babies out of the blues that same day."

"From there, I had an encounter with an angel in disguise who at the end of the day linked me to my biological parents where it suddenly turned out I was a stinkingly rich heiress who had disappeared without trace for so many years."

"Now, it so happened that the person I thought I would never forgive in this life turned out to be my savior who was ready to lay down his life for me."

"It could be said that the journey of my life would best be described as that characterized by twists of fate."

"So I’m not surprised at what is happening at the current phase of my life,

"So how do you plan to repay your savior? Are you still bent on punishing him for what he did in the past or has your thirst for revenge been finally appeased?" Lauren’s gaze never left Kathleen’s face as she flung at her these barrage of questions.
