THE FORGOTTEN HEIRESS-Chapter 223: An Elegant Ghost
Kathleen stared at her hand that Shawn had just kissed as her driver took her to Wyatt corporations. The warmth from his lips still lingered where it had touched.
As she thought of all that transpired at his office today, she felt conflicted. Why did she agree to let him see the children at any time? Doesn’t that expose her to his constant pestering?
Anyways, the deed has been done and there is nothing she can do about it. As for constantly running into him, all she had to do is accompany them for the first two meetings to see how they got along.
When she arrived at Wyatt corporations, Ariel, her assistant, was waiting for her outside the reception looking all flustered.
"Boss, thank God you are finally back," she said in hushed tones.
"What’s up with you, you look like you’ve just seen a ghost."
"It’s more than a ghost, boss or I’d rather say an elegant but arrogant ghost."
Kathleen was speechless and was left wondering. ’What kind of description was that and who was so unfortunate to qualify for such description?’
As she stepped into the reception, she saw the least person she ever expected to appear in Wyatt Corporations and understood why Ariel described her that way.
Sitting with crossed legs at the waiting area, dressed in her finest attire, carrying an air of sophistication and importance was none other than Joanne Hudson, Shawn’s overbearing, nightmare of a mother.
She was gingerly sipping a cup of coffee that was offered to her, probably because of her identity which hardly anyone in Baltimore didn’t know about due to her constantly being in the news as a socialist.
"What is she here for? Hope she has not traced me to Wyatt Corporations and has come to make trouble? Whatever the case, I’m more than ready for her," Kathleen muttered to herself and headed for the elevator, ignoring Joanne.
Feeling a sense of entitlement, Joanne, who was getting impatient from the long wait, rose from her seat to meet the receptionist and happened to spot the familiar figure.
She turned only to confirm that it was actually Kathleen, dressed in professional attire and heading to the elevator.
Thinking Kathleen was just an employee, Joanne dropped her cup of coffee on the receptionist’s desk and strode over, a condescending demeanor evident in her expression.
She scrutinized Kathleen from head to toe, her eyes filled with disdain, oblivious to Kathleen’s true identity.
"And who do we have here?" She let out a disdainful laugh.
"Don’t tell me you are also a staff here. The last time I checked you were pretending to be a medical doctor and I presume you were discovered and shamefully dismissed. So what are you pretending to be this time around?"
Kathleen looked down at Joanne as if she was seeing a joke. "I’m sorry, I don’t have the time to humor Mrs Hudson. Some of us still have to be useful in life," she spat back, her tone devoid of any form of courtesy.
Joanne’s nose flared as she shook with rage. "You!" she said through gritted teeth. "You dare to call me useless?"
It suddenly dawned on her that she was in a public place, and lowered her voice.
"Don’t think you can be proud because you have been assigned some menial tasks to do here. Go fetch someone more competent to speak with me."
Ariel, who was standing beside Kathleen could no longer tolerate Joanne’s remarks, stepped forward, but Kathleen signaled with her eyes, asking her to stay out of it.
She had no choice but to curse Joanne endlessly in her heart as she retreated back to her position beside Kathleen.
She understood that her boss didn’t want her identity revealed to Joanne, just yet.
"Just wait until you find out the identity of the person you are looking down on," she mumbled.
Seemingly unaffected by Joanne’s attitude, Kathleen feigned a professional tone as she asked,
"May I know what business brings you to Wyatt corporations today, Mrs Hudson?"
"You’re insufferable! How dare you ask me such an irrelevant question? Leave immediately and find someone who is in charge," she ordered.
Kathleen, exuding an air of authority, still maintained her composure as she nonchalantly said.
"I’m afraid your wait has not started yet, Mrs Hudson." She gave a curt nod before leaving the area with dignity despite the insults hurled at her.
Seeing Kathleen walk away, Joanne’s anger spilled over and she unknowingly raised her voice, drawing the attention of other employees nearby.
"Shameless bitch. Who do you think you are to determine how long I have to wait?"
The surrounding staff exchanged perplexed looks at Joanne’s behavior towards their outstanding boss and shook their heads, casting pitiful glances at Joanne.
"What’s with that look on your faces," she snapped, but no one paid attention to her
Even when she went to the receptionist for an update, she only gave a vague answer; saying something about the president being indisposed to see anyone without an appointment. And advised her to book an appointment ahead for a slot to see the president in a month’s time.
Joanne left deflated and at the same time enraged. How dare they treat her like that?
If not for the marriage alliance she wanted to fix with Director Wyatt’s daughter, what would make her condescend so low as to wait that long and in the end she didn’t get to see the president.
Since she heard from her friends about Director Wyatt’s daughter, and rushed back from her tour, she has been waiting to see Director Wyatt or his wife but up till that morning, she had not heard any news of their return to Baltimore.
She got tired of waiting, so she came today to see her potential daughter in-law, get to know her and probably ask for her parent’s contact number but didn’t expect to bump into that curse of a woman who made her blow off in such an undignified manner.
Let her continue to be proud. The first thing she will ask her daughter in-law to do was fire her without pay," she consoled herself as she left.
