Chapter 141: I can’t be your Friend

Theo felt the world tilting beneath her feet, and a multitude of emotions struck her all at once. Shock burned through her chest the moment the words spilt out, followed by a deep warmth - because this was Liam. Someone she had come to trust, to like, to lean on.

And then, guilt was next. Because she knew she could never give him what he wanted from her, and knowing that makes her feel like she’s hurting him just by breathing.

She didn’t know what to say. She didn’t know what to do. She wished for it to be a joke, but he wouldn’t take any joke this far.

And then, fear hit her next. Because after this confession of his, she doubted they’d go back to how they used to be.

"It ripped me apart, Thad," He continued softly, "Every time Eric walked by and you stared at him with those soft eyes. I wanted it to be me, and so I was there for you. I wanted you to start looking at me, but it seems... just like I’ve always thought, I’m invisible when it comes to that aspect,"

She finally spoke, and her voice came out small, "You’re... not gay,"

"I wasn’t," He answered, "Till I met you," He let out a dry laugh.

"I... I don’t know what to say,"

"I do," He uttered, and gently took her fingers in his, brushing them longingly, "Be with me, Thaddeus Douglas. Get rid of what you feel for Zeke and be with me. I deserve this, and I want to be with no one, but you. Only you," He stared at her like she was the only meaning left in his world, and his brown eyes were as soft as feathers.

Liam was perfect. He’s always been.

But, she shook her head, "I can’t be with you, Liam,"

She felt his blood run cold, like something had just absorbed all the warmth from it in a second. His bright eyes turned dull, and he cracked out, "Why? What’s wrong with me?"

"It’s not you," Tears gathered in her eyes, "I’m the one. I...," She swallowed tightly, "I love Zeke," She squealed.

Right in front of her eyes, she felt him break. His shoulders sagged, and every atom of light in his eyes disappeared.

Her chest clenched badly, "I’m so sorry. Please. I don’t want to hurt you,"

His hands fell by his sides, and he slowly turned away from her with a downcast look, "You already did," He murmured.

"Liam!" She cried and took his hands, "Don’t walk away, please. I don’t know how...," She breathed hard, "Tell me how to fix this. I want us to still be friends, I don’t want to lose you because of this,"

"Want us to still be friends," He echoed dryly, "I was never your friend, Thad. I always loved you, I never saw myself as merely a friend. I’ve always wanted more, and I don’t think I can keep pretending...to just be your friend,"

His words cut her.

"Let go of my hand, Thad,"

She gripped them even harder.

A painful smirk tugged at his lips, and he looked at her, "Don’t you think you’re being selfish right now?"

"I just want my friend,"

"And I said I can’t be your friend!!!" He roared so hard the walls shook.

She stared at him, wide-eyed with disbelief.

"I can’t keep acting like I don’t wanna grab your face every time I see you, and fucking kiss you senseless. I can’t keep pretending that anytime you speak to any male or female, I don’t feel like ripping their head off and using it as dinner. You want a friend, but I want a lover. That can never work out!" He yanked his hands out of her grip, "Stop being fucking selfish!"

And then, he walked away from her.

She stood there for what felt like hours, trying to make herself believe that all that had not just happened. That she didn’t happen to just lose someone so dear to her.

And Liam would have been a perfect guy for her. He was funny, smart, strong, trustworthy, reliable, and handsome. At the same time, he was the worst guy, since he was her father’s enemy Pack’s heir.

Her back slipped down the wall till she was on the ground, and she sobbed alone in the lonely path.

There was a distant noise, like someone was calling her name. She heard the sound of rushed footsteps, and then she looked up and saw Zeke standing there.

"Hellcat!" He called out worriedly.

She tried to say something, but her throat was too dry.

Quickly, Zeke wrapped his arms over her body and picked her up. She didn’t even realise how dark it was till they were out of the lonely path, and Zeke was racing back to the dorm.

She heard the sound of howling and flashlights shone around, but Zeke evaded them all. In a few seconds, he was closing the dorm door behind them and looking down at her.

He dropped her gently on the bed and threw the duvet around her shoulders. The moment he sat down next to her, she threw her arms around his neck and burst into tears.

The force of the tears shook her body vehemently, and she muffled all the gasp into her shoulders.

Zeke simply held her.

He didn’t know what had happened.

But whatever it was, if anyone had hurt her, he was going to break off their limbs and have their heads hanging by a pole before the night ended.

Seeing her break down like this always broke his heart. He wished he could keep her forever in his arms and protect her from every possible negative emotion there was.

By the time she stopped crying, it was almost midnight and he needed to sleep. She had cried till she had fallen asleep in his arms, and so he laid her down, covered her properly and slid next to her.

Tomorrow, she was going to tell him who had hurt her.

And tomorrow, someone was going to die.
