The Female General Dominates All After Transmigration-Chapter 87 - 86: I Joined the Army
Ling Chengyan finished the paperwork and waited with the two children in the reception room.
Little Shi Tou woke up, and Ling Chengyan placed him on the bench, feeding him with a cake in one hand and a milk bottle in the other.
Fearing hot water might be inconvenient, Ling Chengyan didn’t prepare formula for Shi Tou, but brought soft cake with water instead.
Shi Tou was already ten months old, with strong little legs that could stand steadily while holding onto the back of a chair.
The sunlight outside the window was warm, and little Shi Tou watched a few sparrows hopping on the branches, babbling noisily, even more so than the sparrows outside.
Ling Chengyan broke off a piece of cake and stuffed it into his mouth, silencing the little one momentarily.
Xing’er held a piece of cake, eating and wiping the crumbs and drool from her brother’s mouth with a handkerchief.
"Mom, why does Shi Tou drool so much?" Xing’er complained.
Ling Chengyan smiled, "Little ones drool when they’re teething, you were the same when you were his age."
"Huh?" Xing’er was taken aback, reluctant to believe that she was like her brother when she was little, drooling everywhere? Oh, how embarrassing!
In the large reception room, the three of them sat together, the children babbling, their mother wrapping her arms around the youngest while turning to talk with her daughter. Both mother and daughter wore bright smiles, and the atmosphere was joyful, warm, and relaxed, without a hint of awkwardness or tension.
Wang Liansheng stood at the door, silently watching for a while until Ling Chengyan noticed and looked up, meeting the man’s slightly smiling eyes.
Ling Chengyan didn’t move but called to Xing’er, "Xing’er, look back!"
Xing’er turned her head sharply, eyes widening at the man at the door, stunned into stillness.
Wang Liansheng looked at his daughter, who had evidently grown taller and more beautiful, and felt inexplicably timid, hesitating to approach. But seeing his daughter stunned without rushing over or calling him "dad," he couldn’t help but feel a twinge of hurt and sourness.
He hesitated, extending his arm and called, "Xing’er?"
His call seemed to break the spell, and Xing’er finally dared to recognize him, shouting, "Daddy!"
She ran over, throwing herself into Wang Liansheng’s arms, hugging his neck tightly, "Daddy!"
Xing’er called out again, and then the tears wouldn’t stop, falling and soaking Wang Liancheng’s collar, brushing against his ears and neck.
Ling Chengyan put down the cake and bottle in her hand, wiped Shi Tou’s mouth, and wiped her own hands before holding Shi Tou and standing up, slowly walking over.
Wang Liansheng hugged his daughter, wiping away a tear, then looked up to see his wife approaching, holding his son. He hesitated a moment before calling, "Xiao Yan..."
Ling Chengyan smiled with her eyes, placing Shi Tou on the ground and holding the child’s arms with both hands, sending him forward, "Shi Tou, this is daddy, say daddy."
Wang Liansheng squatted on the ground, one arm around his daughter, the other reaching for his son, "Oh, Shi Tou has grown so much, can he call me daddy yet?"
Xing’er, with red eyes and a pouty mouth, said, "He can only call mom, he can’t even call me sister, silly boy!"
Wang Liansheng didn’t really care if his son could call him, but the long separation had made them strangers, a little awkward. He tried to find a topic, hoping for renewed familiarity and harmony.
With the two children handed off to their father, Ling Chengyan turned back to pack their things, gathering food and necessities, loading them up. Wang Liansheng also stood up, cradling Shi Tou.
Just as she had come, she carried one in her arms and led one by the hand.
Xing’er puffed up her cheek and smiled at Ling Chengyan, showing off, "Mom, the candy daddy gave me."
Ling Chengyan patted her and thought, daughter’s father is just as sweet, they don’t lack candy at home now, eating it every day, yet she’s never been this happy.
It’s just a piece of candy.
Ling Chengyan took out two boxes of cigarettes and handed them to Wang Liansheng.
Wang Liansheng was a bit surprised but took them with a smile, "As always, you think of everything."
Since arriving here, Ling Chengyan had been observing; there was no one watching in the reception room, just someone standing outside the door.
Just as she had heard, the management was relatively relaxed.
She reached out and took little Shi Tou back, calling Xing’er over to hold her hand, while Wang Liansheng carried the luggage over to the door first, handing the two packs of cigarettes to the two people at the door.
"I’m taking them to the dormitory for a while," Wang Liansheng said.
The person who had brought him over looked at the cigarettes in his hand, nodded expressionlessly, "Go ahead, mind the time, don’t delay the afternoon work."
Wang Liansheng thanked him, brought the luggage over to reunite with Ling Chengyan and the children, and walked inside together.
The farm was a vast expanse, thousands of acres of land, with the living and office areas covering dozens of acres divided into sections.
The reception room and office were together, with rows of brick houses behind the office, forming neat little yards for the cadre families.
Following the path from the office area, passing through an iron gate led to the reformation area, with rows of bare brick houses, no yards, only neatly lined trees with trunks trimmed straight up to at least five meters before branching.
Wang Liansheng led Ling Chengyan and their children to a room, not needing anyone to open the door as it was unlatched, just ajar.
He pushed the door open, entering a room with only two single beds inside, each with a low cabinet at the head, where cups and books lay, indicating the cabinets stored items and also served as tables.
Wang Liansheng entered, placing the bag on a low cabinet and hurrying to take Shi Tou, putting him on the bed on the west side, "Sit down and rest, you must be exhausted from the journey."
Wang Liansheng urged Ling Chengyan to sit, hastily pouring water from the thermos for her...
Watching the man bustling awkwardly due to nervousness, Ling Chengyan didn’t stop him, instead directing him, "Fetch some water for us to wash up a bit, we’re covered in dust from the journey."
"Alright!" Wang Liansheng set down the enamel cup, took the basin, and hurried out to fetch water.
Finally, with their hands and faces washed and the hot water in the cup cooled enough, Ling Chengyan resumed feeding the half-eaten cake to Shi Tou, instructing Xing’er, "Take out your dad’s padded jacket, let’s see if it fits him."
The jacket was taken out, a brand new military jacket, with the inspection tag still intact, untouched.
Wang Liansheng had just observed the clothing and appearance of the mother and children, even without keen eyesight, he would notice the significant change, not at all like they came from the countryside. Now, with a brand new military coat brought out, his expression finally shifted.
He suppressed the turmoil in his heart, striving to remain calm as he asked, "Where did you get this fine thing?"
Ling Chengyan had just fed Shi Tou some water, glanced up at his words with a calm demeanor, "I enlisted."
She said, handing a piece of cake to Xing’er, "Xing’er, go play at the door, call us if anyone comes."
Xing’er didn’t take the cake, "Just ate, not hungry."
Then, she skipped outside.
