Chapter 312: Chapter 311: Old Friends Everywhere

Three days later, the district sent a vehicle to take her to the provincial capital, formally assuming the role of captain of the provincial special forces team.

Before the Spring Festival, Wang Liansheng was promoted to the second-in-command of the planning department and had just taken on a major investment and recruitment task, thus unable to transfer temporarily. Consequently, Ling Chengyan lived alone in the suite allocated by the provincial district, with Xiao Yu, who attended a prestigious provincial high school, returning on weekends.

Ling Chengyan assumed the captain role, but was essentially a lone commander, with only one instructor and one deputy captain in place, both of whom she knew well.

Zhang Yuanhong and Tian Kai exchanged a glance and then looked at Ling Chengyan, the three of them laughing together.

Ling Chengyan shook her head and laughed, "When we parted, it felt like we wouldn’t see each other for a long time, but who would have thought?"

Zhang Yuanhong immediately raised his hand to protest, "Captain is showing disdain for us, eh?"

Tian Kai retorted, "Who’s with you? Captain is quite satisfied with me. When we parted, she even complained that time went too fast... Captain, I’ll be hanging out with you from now on."

Zhang Yuanhong glared, "You little rascal, asking for a beating!"

Tian Kai chuckled, rolling up his sleeves, "Instructor Zhang, can you handle anyone?"

Zhang Yuanhong choked up, nearly suffering internal injuries.

Now there were just three people, Tian Kai was from the field army reconnaissance battalion, his combat prowess was undeniable, and he very likely couldn’t beat him.

As for Ling Chengyan next to them, don’t be fooled by her being a woman. Who in the entire district didn’t know about her extraordinary combat skills, surpassing ordinary people? Forget ordinary soldiers; even seven or eight special forces members wouldn’t stand a chance against her. Would he dare to fight? He wouldn’t even dare think about it!

The three old acquaintances gathered, saving the time on familiarization and adjustment. After a brief chat, they officially started their work.

Their first task was to assemble the special forces team within a month.

The scope given to them was all the troops in the district, with no restriction on service type, meaning they had the authority to pick people, selecting three hundred candidates from tens of thousands. After a period of training, the three hundred would be screened again, leaving only over a hundred.

Truly a selection of one in a thousand.

The troops had just returned from the battlefield, the blood still warm, and upon hearing about the selection competition, they rushed to sign up without even considering what they would do after passing.

Once the notification was sent out, in just three days, over twenty thousand people signed up.

Step one, each unit selects themselves, with an estimate of three hundred people from each unit. Ling Chengyan’s team would send people to participate in the selections of each unit.

Step two, after the initial selection, reselect from the gathered personnel, leaving three hundred.

Step three, train the three hundred people for a month, during which they might be eliminated anytime, leaving over a hundred as the members of the special forces team.

That morning, Ling Chengyan left with simple luggage. She was headed to Yu Province for the first round of the selection competition.

She hadn’t brought a bicycle or anything, intending to take a bus to the train station.

However, just as she reached the doorstep, she saw two brand-new specially customized off-road vehicles parked outside, with Zhang Yuanhong and Tian Kai standing beside them, smiling at her.

Ling Chengyan raised her eyebrow slightly, walked up, and laughed, "What other surprises do you have for me?"

Tian Kai scratched his head and looked back at Zhang Yuanhong.

Zhang Yuanhong laughed, "No more, this is the last one."

"Actually, we only knew there would be vehicles allocated, but didn’t expect them to arrive so quickly. Luckily, we can use them immediately."

He said as he walked forward, reaching out to open the driver’s side door of a vehicle and made an inviting gesture.

Ling Chengyan smiled, casually tossed her bag onto the front passenger seat, lowered her head slightly, and sat inside.

The vehicle was brand new, having run less than a hundred kilometers. She also noticed one detail: the tank was filled.

"Just two vehicles?" Ling Chengyan asked from the window.

Zhang Yuanhong and Tian Kai exchanged a glance and laughed in unison.

Ling Chengyan laughed too, waved her hand, stomped the accelerator with her foot, and the vehicle sped away. She lightly whistled: The car was great, much more comfortable than the truck or the old jeep she drove before.

After nearly eight hours of driving, Ling Chengyan arrived at the Bian City garrison base in Yu Province.

Upon getting out of the car and identifying herself, two young soldiers quickly came out to greet her.

"Didn’t expect to see you again, now I’m calling you Captain Ling!" exclaimed a man with thick eyebrows and big eyes, quite heroic, Ling Chengyan considered him an old acquaintance too, Liao Kai, whom she had once participated with in a basketball game.

Behind him, a familiar-looking person was there, but Ling Chengyan couldn’t recall the name.

Liao Kai warmly shook hands with Ling Chengyan and introduced, "Zhao Xingyun, remember him?"

Ling Chengyan realized; upon mentioning the name, she recalled him as one of the basketball participants, nearly six feet two inches tall, a strong physique, and a main forward on their team.

After exchanging pleasantries, Liao Kai and Zhao Xingyun led Ling Chengyan to the guesthouse to check-in and then to the military dining hall for dinner.

While eating, Ling Chengyan learned the basic situation of the Yu Province applicants. Additionally, Liao Kai revealed Zhao Xingyun also signed up to participate in the selection competition.

"You ought to take care of him," Xue Kai joked, both serious and playful.

Ling Chengyan looked at Zhao Xingyun standing six feet two, smiled, and nodded, "I’ve seen Xingyun’s skills firsthand; barring accidents, I doubt he’ll need much of my care."

Her words were complimenting, making Xue Kai and Zhao Chengyun smile.

Xue Kai added, "You know our province has Beishong Mountain, where locals have a martial arts tradition. Many good lads can be found there. During tomorrow’s selection, you’d better choose well, picking out several outstanding guys."

Ling Chengyan smiled and nodded, "To be honest, I’m still on my own, so having good potentials to select from, of course, the more, the merrier."

Talking and laughing, the simple working meal ended in half an hour. Xue Kai and Zhao Chengyun suggested Ling Chengyan rest, but she insisted on checking the selection arena before returning to the guesthouse.

Without sleep all night, Ling Chengyan awoke to the reveille call. Quickly dressing and washing, she wore a light training outfit to the training ground, joining the troop for a run and workout. After running a few laps, she warmed up and coincidentally met Xue Kai coming to inspect the morning exercise, leaving the troop to follow him to the dining hall for breakfast.

She had breakfast with around ten instructors and judges participating in the selection. Xue Kai didn’t specifically introduce Ling Chengyan’s role but simply mentioned her name and rank. After mutual recognition, they turned the conversation to the upcoming selection competition.

After breakfast, at eight o’clock, the selection officially began.

The selection events were decided by the district, starting with an enhanced 400-meter obstacle course, followed by a shooting exercise, and then combat...

The selection lasted for two days. Ling Chengyan didn’t excessively participate in the selection but quietly noted a few standout individuals she favored. Zhao Xingyun was one of them.
