The Female General Dominates All After Transmigration-Chapter 209 - 206: Homecoming
When Ling Chengyan got home, it was already the twenty-fourth day of the twelfth lunar month. She had spent not only the Laba Festival away, but also the Little New Year.
By the time she got home, Wang Liansheng had already been gone for three days.
As she entered, she saw Xiaoyu holding Xiao Qibai, while Hongling was helping Shi Tou wash his hands and face. Meanwhile, Xiao Xing was scolding Shi Tou beside them, "Are you dumb or something? So what if Wu Xiaohu skates a little faster than you? He’s older, you’re younger. He’s already in second grade, four years older than you, why compare yourself to him and fall?"
Shi Tou pouted and lowered his eyes, neither crying nor arguing, just let his sister reprimand him.
When Ling Chengyan lifted the door curtain and entered the room, the children finally noticed her, turned their heads, and immediately cheered, calling her sister, aunt, and of course, two called her mom.
As for Xiao Qibai in Xiaoyu’s arms, he had long forgotten about Ling Chengyan as his fourth aunt, only staring blankly at her, probably thinking she looked somewhat familiar.
Ling Chengyan reached out to catch her daughter who rushed over, raised her hand to brush Xiao Xing’s disheveled bangs, and found her forehead bruised with a purple ointment applied.
Xiao Xing tried to pull her hair to cover it, but it was too late; her mother had already seen the wound on her forehead.
"How did that happen? Did you get into a fight?" Ling Chengyan thought of a possibility, based on the conversation she had heard at the door.
"Certainly not!" Xiao Xing said smugly, lifting her chin, "Xing Fei can’t match me, let alone Wu Xiaohu, that little chick. I wouldn’t bother fighting him!"
Wu Xiaohu is the youngest son of Instructor Wu from the Automobile Company. Xiao Xing wasn’t a little child anymore; she knew their family had a good relationship with the Wu Family, and even though Wu Xiaohu was somewhat annoying, she wouldn’t stoop to bullying him.
Shi Tou had already dried his hands and face and dashed over to hug Ling Chengyan’s leg, looking up, "Sister is much faster than Wu Xiaohu, faster than Xing Dafei, and Zheng Dalin. Sister is the strongest!"
As Shi Tou praised, Xiao Xing’s chin lifted even higher, her nostrils almost pointing to the sky.
Ling Chengyan got caught up with the two children as soon as she entered, resolving a minor dispute, confirming it was a little spat over sledging. She checked Xiao Xing’s forehead and Shi Tou’s hands and knees, confirming they were just minor bumps and scrapes. She didn’t worry much, letting them go.
After the two little ones finished discussing their trivial matters, Xiaoyu and Hongling finally got a chance to talk.
Xiaoyu handed Xiao Qibai to Hongling, took Ling Chengyan’s luggage, and carried it inside.
Hongling finally got a chance to say, "Fourth aunt, you’ve come back. With both you and fourth uncle not here, second uncle and aunt are about to close the shop, planning to take us back to the hometown to celebrate the New Year tomorrow."
"What’s your fourth uncle doing?" Ling Chengyan didn’t know Wang Liansheng had left, she thought there was some special work task needing him to travel.
Unexpectedly, Hongling replied, "Said it was a telegram from fourth aunt’s uncle, asking fourth aunt to go there. Since fourth aunt wasn’t home, fourth uncle went instead."
Hongling, though not very young, was still considered a child by the adults, and nobody had specifically told her about the matter. She learned bits from listening to the grown-ups talking but didn’t know the specifics of where he went or what the situation was.
Ling Chengyan furrowed her brows at this, but rather than question the children further, she comforted them a bit, then put down Xiao Xing and Shi Tou, who had been clingy for a while, and looked at the almost sleepy Xiao Qibai, "This child really has a good temperament, can fall asleep even in such noise."
She instructed Hongling to place Xiao Qibai on the bed to sleep, and she herself went to the back room to prepare clean clothes for washing up.
The room was as tidy and clean as she had left it before.
Zheng Xiaotian had been watching over the children these past few days, but today was the last day the shop was open, so she went to the shop to check the stock and close for the New Year.
She didn’t stay in Ling Chengyan and Wang Liansheng’s room, but slept with Xiao Qibai on the small bed in the little hall. Xiao Xing and Shi Tou slept in the inner room at night.
Ling Chengyan glanced around, and opened a drawer close to the head of the bed.
The three-drawer bedside table had one nearest the bed belonging to her, the middle belonged to Wang Liansheng, and the furthest one was communal, holding some daily items.
Sure enough, she was right; inside the drawer was the telegram and a letter left by Wang Liansheng.
The letter wasn’t long, only one page.
Ling Chengyan opened it to see Wang Liansheng’s beautifully strong handwriting.
In such a note, Wang Liansheng naturally wouldn’t write anything overly affectionate, just briefly explained he received the telegram, couldn’t contact her, so decided to go see her father himself. He also mentioned the leadership helped him buy a plane ticket, greatly shortening the travel time. He expected to return in about a week if nothing special happened to make it back to celebrate New Year together.
Ling Chengyan read the letter quickly, then picked up the slightly crumpled telegram. After the message, her gaze fell on the sender’s address—Jiang Province.
When she was with the Automobile Company, she visited many places: Northeast, Meng Province, and Southeast Coast as well as the Southwest Front. But Jiang Province and Zang Province, being too far and remote, she hadn’t had the chance to visit.
She held the telegram, found a road atlas, and roughly calculated the distance using the highway—four thousand kilometers!
With an average speed of sixty kilometers per hour without stopping day or night, it would take about three days and nights. In reality, stopping for rest and meals cannot be avoided, so a one-way trip would take about five days.
That’s still assuming everything goes smoothly without any incidents. If anything unexpected happens... that would be hard to say.
To reach the far-away Western Border, it’s not just about the long road, it entails crossing vast desolate deserts and wild areas. It’s winter season, encountering sandstorms or heavy snowstorms is quite possible.
Ling Chengyan sighed lightly, put away the telegram and atlas, then took her clothes to freshen up.
Once she cleaned up and changed into something comfortable and clean, Xiaoyu and Hongling had bought buns, cooked porridge, and added meat to stew noodles and cabbage.
Looking at the table, with only one pot of cabbage, Ling Chengyan smiled and called Shi Tou over, "Go to my bag and get the treats I bought."
Despite the cold weather, traveling back from the south, she bought some local specialties including southern fruits, bamboo crafts, porcelain, items too bulky to bring home yet. However, she had packed some snacks and treats, and after entering the province, also bought roasted chicken and lamb head meat, all packed in a large bag right in her handbag.
Shi Tou loved the mission, not feeling bossed around at all, enthusiastically nodded his big head and ran into the room, rummaging through his mom’s handbag, pulling out some candies and snacks, as well as many wrapped stewed goods, smoked meat and sausages.
