Chapter 221: Chapter 225 Angel in the Mortal World (15)

Su Li just couldn’t take it anymore. The clamor from the grown man was like having a hundred frogs strapped to his body. She stiffened her face and changed the subject.

She patted the dilapidated vehicle, which seemed on the verge of falling apart, and asked with confusion, "Didn’t I transfer a lot of money to your account? Why not get a new car? This one is too broken down."

The middle-aged uncle immediately shot Su Li a reproachful look, "It’s just a means of transport, as long as it works, that’s all that matters. No need for anything fancy."

Right after that, he pompously continued, "Our research funding has to be spent on ’sharp blade.’ We absolutely can’t waste it."

"....But, if the kind-hearted Miss Su wants to sponsor a new one for us, we wouldn’t refuse," he added.

The middle-aged uncle’s sleazy smile was so greasy that Su Li turned her head away, unable to bear looking at him, "Heh, you wish."

Seeing that he couldn’t fleece this innocent lamb, Su Li, any further, the smile on the man’s face disappeared just as suddenly as an illusion in her eyes.

The middle-aged uncle resumed his incessant grumbling with an indifferent face.

Su Li: "....."

Reality, just too real. Is there no trace of warmth left in the Mortal World?

Soon, the middle-aged uncle drove the old clunker that almost shook Su Li to nausea, but eventually, they arrived.

The rest of the journey would have to be made on foot.

The uncle didn’t even bother to lock the car; he just shut the door and took the lead towards the top of the mountain.

Was he so sure that no one was around, or maybe no one would covet such a battered little vehicle?

Su Li’s lips twitched, tossing her suitcase into the car and swiftly following after.

Their destination was the mountain’s peak.

The mountain road was rugged and steep, with a labyrinth of paths. Without someone to lead, they could easily get lost among the wilds.

After a difficult climb to the top, Su Li was greeted by the sight of a lonely thatched hut.

By appearances, it seemed quite precarious, as if a slightly stronger wind could flip the roof right off.

"Uh, your working conditions seem pretty tough," she commented.

Somehow, the uncle’s ears turned incredibly sharp at that moment. Su Li had merely muttered under her breath, but the man ahead of her abruptly came to a halt and turned with a greasy smile of delight, "Are you going to continue investing in us?"

"It doesn’t have to be much, just a few tens of millions would do, enough for us to properly fix the roof."

Su Li: "...." What, is your roof made of gold and diamonds?

"Our research institute’s roof isn’t made of gold and diamonds, but of a special material far more precious than these common things."

Su Li: "....." She was pretty sure she hadn’t said anything out loud.

"You didn’t say anything, huh? But your facial expression tells a different story."

"Would you like to invest?"

Right then, Su Li could only feel awkward. The scene was like being in a brothel where the madam waves a fragrant fan and asks: Sir, would you like a girl?

Su Li: "Thanks, but no thanks." Please pay respect to my indifferent face.

"Oh, well then." The middle-aged uncle instantly reverted back to his cold greasy demeanor.

And wouldn’t you know it, once the middle-aged uncle went through fingerprint verification, iris scanning, and facial recognition to get into the thatched hut, Su Li had no idea how he did it.

That primitive Stone Age abode, in the blink of an eye, transformed into a cold, high-tech place.

The center of the room’s floor cracked open, just big enough to fit one person.

"Jump down."

---

An elderly man with graying hair led Su Li toward a sealed metal room.

Su Li saw him, the director she had only spoken to through voice communication.

He looked like a typical old man, and it was hard to imagine that he held another, much more impressive, identity.

"You young ladies just have too much money and nowhere to spend it. Invest a little more and not only will I let you take a closer look, but I could even pluck a feather to gift you."

Su Li: "Thank you, but I really don’t need feathers."

The exasperated director retorted, "What do you know, brat? Those are feathers from an Angel. Do you have any clue how much money they’d fetch at auction?"

"Can you and your roomful of researchers stop talking about money all the time? It’s vulgar, not classy at all."

Ever since being picked up by that middle-aged uncle, Su Li was incessantly bombarded by talk of money, a topic that was a disservice to the lofty image of their researchers.

Director: "..."

Su Li: "It’s just a Birdman with wings, what’s so special about it? Do her feathers have some special function? Can they summon a Dragon or have any other effects?"

"Uh, no, there’s none of that."

"So, they’re basically the same as the feathers on a big white goose, aren’t they? You tell me... spending tens of millions for a few goose feathers, what’s the point?"

The director’s thinking was completely skewed by Su Li’s tangent, "Now that I think about it, you’re kinda right."

Even as corrupt and thick-skinned as he was, he couldn’t bring himself to exchange goose feathers for tens of millions—it would be utterly devoid of conscience.

Just then, the middle-aged uncle suddenly appeared sneakily behind the two, interjecting coldly, "Director, that’s not the right comparison. How can you equate a big white goose with a mythical creature?"

"Damn, I almost got dragged into that quagmire by you."

Su Li, fed up with their spells that seemed as inexorable as Tang Seng’s chanting, quickly changed the subject, "We’ve arrived."

The seamless metal doors opened at her command, revealing a room of about ten cubic meters.

In the center of the room, on the solitary metal bed, lay a naked woman. Her ink-black hair obscured her face and prevented anyone from discerning her expression at the moment.

Unlike normal humans, this woman sprouted two massive wings from her spine. They were spread wide, and on closer inspection, Su Li could see minute droplets of blood not entirely cleansed from them.

If one could overlook the bruised puncture sites on the naked woman’s limbs, the scene before them was strikingly impactful.

The jade-like skin, the silk-like hair, the seductive curves... it all tested a man’s primal urges.

Alas, of the three people currently in her presence, aside from Su Li, a woman who was uninterested, the old director and the middle-aged uncle seemed as blind as bats.

Or perhaps, in their eyes, the woman before them was nothing more than a subject for their research?

The middle-aged uncle’s eyes gleamed with anticipation; he rubbed his hands eagerly and let out a creepy chuckle now and then, exuding an indescribable sleaziness.

An eyesore.

"Perfect, just perfect... this is the creator’s bias."

"Her genes contain a factor not found in humans. This elevates all her functions several levels above ours, and her healing power is simply extraordinary. If we can crack this genetic code, then apply it to humans, I predict that 98 to 99 percent of known human diseases could be cured."

The woman, bound by unknown materials at her wrists and ankles, seemed to hear the voices, sense the newcomers, and slowly lifted her head.

"I recognize you..."
