Chapter 73: In The Dark Room.

Music Recommendation: Lily By Alan Walker.

Just as its name depicted, the dark room was dimly litted, enabling anyone sitting or standing there to see those in the light clearly. Other than the two large couches, a glass table, and a mini bar erected in the room, the room was devoid of any other form of decorations.

Ethan watched over the ceremony from his seat in the dark room, his eyes travelling from one corner of the ballroom to another. He twirled the glass of wine in his hand, as he took in the guests various expressions and their furtive glances around the ballroom. He could tell they were looking for any signs or traces of him being present at the party that night. They never, for once, stopped hoping that he would reveal himself to the public.

Presently, his eyes hovered around a group of men and women who were probably more or less his age, and were camped at one end of the ballroom. From where he was, he could make out Enoch and Ruthlyn’s figure before his eyes strayed away from them, looking for his wife who seemed to be absent from there. Where was she?

Turning to Raymond who was on his phone and probably speaking to Shikera’s friend, he asked, "Won’t you go down today?"

Raymond’s brow furrowed at his question. Though he rarely stayed with Ethan whenever the latter was in the dark room, it was also unusual for Ethan to ask him to go down...except of course, if he had an errand for him to carry out.

"Do you need me to do something downstairs?"

Ethan averted his gaze from him, seeing that his trick had been figured out.

"I can’t find Shikera with Enoch or Ruthlyn, do you mind helping me find her?"

You can as well ask me if I do mind not collecting my bonus for this month, Raymond thought.

"Miss Anderson is not with them for now, she’s with Madam," he answered.

At Raymond’s answer, Ethan turned back to stare down at the ballroom as his eyes travelled to the right side of the ballroom where the middle aged business men and their wives were. Knowing that was where he would find his mother, his scrutinizing gaze was quick to recognize everyone of the people standing there...until they fell on her.

It was true Ethan had been looking for his mother, but when his eyes caught that brown haired girl in blue dress, they stayed glued on her. And what was she wearing that even he could make out how her body would look like naked, from where he was standing?

"Raymond," he called, but was met with silence. Not wanting to take his eyes away from Shikera for even a second, he hurriedly glanced back to see that the chair Raymond previously occupied was now vacant.

Pressing the bell on the table, he watched as the door opened and one of their workers walked in.

"Need something, Ethan?"

Though he wanted to reprimand her for addressing him informally, Ethan decided that getting Shikera here as fast as possible, was more important.

"Get Shikera up here and be careful in checking that no one follows you up here," he instructed, expecting the worker to leave immediately but seeing her rooted to the floor, he snapped, "And what are you still doing here?!"

The lady took two steps backwards, visibly shaken by the annoyance reflected in Ethan’s voice.

"No, Ethan! It’s because I don’t know who Shikera is. I on- only just arrived three days ago and I thought you were...you were aware," she stuttered.

Ethan sighed, not hiding his irritation at the lady’s unprofessionalism. He didn’t do anything more than that though, as he gave her another instruction.

"Get Esther here. You do know who she is, right, Miss Hazel?"

Hazel nodded vigorously and hurried out the door to get the only young mistress of the mansion. Of course, that would only be until she gave Ethan little princes and princesses! A smile curved on her lips at that thought.

. . . . .

"Daddy! I brought her," Esther yelled. With Shikera’s hand supporting hers, she pushed open the door to the dark room.

Shikera followed the little girl into the room, while blinking twice to enable her eyes to adjust to the dim light in the room. From where she was standing at the front of the door, she could make out Ethan’s silhouette on the king-sized couch in the middle of the room.

With Esther still holding her, she closed the distance between herself and Ethan before taking her seat on the chair which Raymond was previously sitting on.

"You asked Esther to call me..." Not knowing what to say, Shikera had to start with that.

On the other hand, Ethan motioned for Esther to come closer before whispering something in her ears. The little girl smiled at whatever she heard from her father, before running out of the room to leave them alone.

"Are you done avoiding me?" Ethan asked, with a bland tone.

Silence reigned in the room for a minute, before Shikera’s soft voice broke it.

"I wasn’t," she lied.

Three days ago, when Ethan had stepped away from her and she had gone back to her room. She had tried getting her story together but had failed miserably in making herself sound like a cool and exemplary heiress. How would she also tell him that she could not remember what happened to her before 15? Everything would sound like a lie! And she could not bear it if he stopped liking her because of her past, as that would jeopardize her utmost desire at the moment.

For that, she had been waking up early to leave for work and arriving late enough after the whole house was asleep. Or rather, after she thought the whole house was asleep, since her breakfast was always there before she woke up and when she came back, she would always meet her dinner on the table. She had continued this routine for three days now and even today, when they had to come to Deloachs mansion, she had chosen to ride with Ruthlyn instead of following Ethan.

"You were. And it’s making me angrier that the doctor knows more than what I would ever know. Seeing as it’s hard for you to tell me what happened, it looks like he’s really at an advantage," Ethan broke into her thoughts.

"I am sor-"

"That anger is only an a teeny bit compared to the one I’m feeling now though," he interrupted her, turning to stare into her eyes, which had surprise evident in them.

"Who or what angered you?" Shikera asked, trying to take this opportunity to make him forget about her. If she could fuel his anger for whatever angered him, then she would be free for tonight.

"You," he deadpanned, rising up to his full length before walking to stand directly in front of her.

Not wanting to strain her neck in order to look up at him, Shikera also stood up.

"What are you wearing?"

At that question, Shikera looked down at her dress before looking back up with confused eyes.

"I am wearing...a dress?" Her answer, which was suppose to be a statement turned into a question because of the way Ethan was looking at her suspiciously.

"You are married, Shikera...to a possessive man at that." His voice seemed to be steely at this point, and his dark eyes was void of any emotions.

"What is wrong with my dress?" Shikera had to ask.

"Come here."

With that, he went to the door and locked it from the inside before going back to stand before Shikera.
