Chapter 71: Enticing Headline

Shikera frowned, failing to recognize the man standing in front of her. Thinking back now, Ethan did seem to have different personalities or should she call it...shades?

There were times when she felt he was different from before, but never had she seen him as broken or a love starved man. But then, the dark orbs before her seemed to be sincere, as they focused intently on her.

"I will...tell you everything..." Even though she was promising with a firm tone, Shikera knew she couldn’t tell him everything. If she did, then she would be shooting herself in the foot and terminating her lifelong wish. At best, she would tell him everything apart from her one secret that only her father and doctors knew.

Hearing her soft voice, Ethan closed his eyes and when he opened them back, they seemed more relaxed than earlier.

"Now?" He asked gruffly.

Shikera’s eyes widened. She wasn’t ready yet! At least she needed to get her story and lies in place, as she wouldn’t be able to bear it if this man finally thought of her as a burden too.

"No! I promise... probably tomorrow?" She asked in an uncertain tone, wondering if Ethan’s vunerable self wouldn’t find anything wrong with her proposition. She was relieved when the man stepped away from her, different emotions flickering through his eyes.

"Goodnight, come down in thirty minutes to have your meal."

Preston TV.

Looking up from her laptop, Cyprian glared in the direction of Team leader Sterling’s seat while also blaming Raymond in her mind. Was it not better when the woman thought of her and Shikera as useless than now when Raymond’s help had put her in trouble?

Earlier this morning, when Cyprian went to the top floor to arrange refreshments for Lady Preston and her friends, she received a call from Raymond where the man had called her to ask about Shikera.

He was supposedly acting under the directive of his boss who didn’t want to call Shikera by himself. Being the candid person she was, Cyprian had told him she was not sure Shikera would be able to hold out as they were currently serving as tour guides for their Team leader.

To cut the long story short, after Raymond heard the reason why they were being punished, he suggested they put the news out that Anderson Corporation was collaborating with Lucian Groups soon. Since both Anderson Corp. and Lucian Groups didn’t hide matters concerning their company like DL Corporation, he said it would be alright.

After Raymond got approval from Ethan, Cyprian had proceeded to the financial department to inform her team leader of the news. As expected, the woman had been very surprised but had later remembered that Shikera and Cyprian had been sent to Anderson Corporation to act undercover for a month. She presumed Cyprian had probably found herself a boyfriend out of the disloyal workers in Anderson Corporation.

Just then, someone came to call her to tell her Shikera had been rushed to the hospital. She tried calling Raymond back but her phone went off right after the first ring, causing her to hand over the phone to Josh in the entertainment dept. so he could help her with charging it.

After her trip through three floors, she had rushed to Team leader Sterling to request permission to join CEO Lane at the hospital but the CEO’s call came in just then. He informed her Team leader not to worry about sending anyone to the hospital since Shikera had fainted only because of stress.

After that call, Cyprian had known without anyone telling her that this devil of a team leader would not permit her to leave. What she didn’t expect was that the woman would give her another assignment, asking her to analyze and compare the rise of stock prices between Anderson corporation and Lucian Groups, and then inform her of who would likely benefit the most from the cooperation. How the h*ll was she expected to know how to do that?

Team leader Sterling didn’t want to hear an excuse though, since she believed it was an essential skill a reporter was supposed to have. And Cyprian had been forced to stay glued to her seat, blaming Raymond and her evil temporary team leader for her discomfort.

"Hey!"

The gruff voice in the room which she had thought was empty, as everyone had gone home earlier, startled Cyprian as she looked up to see someone staring down at her. 𝐟𝚛𝕖𝚎𝕨𝗲𝐛𝚗𝐨𝐯𝐞𝕝.𝐜𝗼𝗺

"Hey?" Cyprian replied warily.

She had never seen such an handsome face since she had started working in this station so it was a given that she would be fairly scared.

"You seem to be a very diligent worker..." The handsome man said, and Cyprian who had been waiting to vent her grievances somewhere, saw the man as an easy target. But first, she had to make sure the man was not working in this place or any other press stations around.

For her to do that, she had to exercise a little bit of shamelessness.

"Ah...you flatter me, handsome," she smiled, watching the surprised look on the man’s face. He surely hadn’t thought that such a serious looking worker he had seen earlier could be this flirty.

"Hand-Handsome? You are the one who flatters me," the man chuckled.

"Not at all, you are really handsome. Which brings me to the question?" She began. Seeing that the man’s expression did not change, and that he seemed to be waiting for her question, she continued, "I have never seen such an handsome face in the whole of this station before, except our CEO of course. What department do you work in?"

"I don’t work in Preston. I only came here to deliver a parcel to Team leader Sterling, but it seems she left for home, already," the man answered.

Cyprian failed to notice that the man had addressed her team leader officially, as she was still swimming in elation to know that the man was not working here.

"Oh, then would you mind if I talk to you for a while? Or...you might be busy..."

"I am not busy! Your work also looks interesting so I wouldn’t mind staying for a while," the man interrupted, his eyes reverting to the screen of Cyprian’s laptop.

As if in sudden realization, Cyprian slammed the laptop shut with widened eyes.

"Why were you looking at it?! You seem suspicious," What if, after all the man turned out to be a spy and actually carted this special news away? And allowed their competitors to air the news before she could. Or if he was really a delivery man, what if he actually sold the news?

The man’s eyes widened in disbelief, "Why would I be suspicious? I only wanted to use my knowledge on your behalf, since I know a little bit about this. Why would you conclude I’m suspicious?" His self vindicating tone seemed to work wonders as Cyprian slowly but steadily raised the laptop back, allowing him view clearly, the contents of the screen.

In a few minutes, the man had explained everything to her and now, he was even helping her with finding an enticing headline which would fit the presentation perfectly.

"...how about just telling them plainly? Anderson and Lucian’s name can cause enough wave on its own," Cyprian suggested. If she was in her former department, she would have tried all she could to find an headline that would make viewers or readers want to jump at the presentation but then, she could not think of anything enticing when financial or numbers were mentioned. Except her salary of course.

The man disagreed with her.

"No, I know those big names are enough but we shouldn’t let them think we are banking on the names to earn publicity for the news."

"Then what headline do you suggest?"

"Probably..." He picked up a pen lying aimlessly on the desk and wrote something on Cyprian’s jotter.

_

A GAME OF NUMBERS; TWO GIANTS CO-OPERATE, WHO PROFITS MORE?!

_

Cyprian nodded, a smile tugging at her lips when she heard him.

The man continued, "Then we can have a sub headline which features the two names. Don’t you think that works better?"

"Absolutely!" Cyprian almost screamed, already picturing that woman’s face when she arrived the next day. She would probably be so surprised that she would appoint Cyprian as a team leader, right?

"Alright then, why don’t I get on my way?" he stood up as he talked and Cyprian followed, hurriedly assembling her laptop and belongings into her bag.

"I’ll leave with you. You didn’t tell me your name though?" she asked.

"You didn’t too. So...ladies first?"

"Cyprian."

"Maxwell," he returned with a grin.

"So Maxwell, thanks very much for your help today! I would have treated you to a meal if we weren’t strangers," she laughed awkwardly as she said that, hoping inwardly that the man before her wouldn’t insist on her to really do it.

However, her fears were put to rest when Maxwell replied, "It’s alright; I don’t really think I did something much anyway. How about you tell me why you asked me to wait in the first place? You didn’t think I could help with your work, right?"

"Yeah..." They were outside the door now so Cyprian slammed it shut, making a mental note to inform the security guard downstairs that she was done with work. The man had come earlier but hadn’t been able to lock the door since she was still working there.

"I actually wanted to pour my feelings out somewhere. It’s no bother though..."

"Why wouldn’t it be a bother? You can tell me now..."
