Chapter 39: Different Kinds Of Men.

There are different kinds of men:

- The brooding loner: a man who is aloof, solitary, and often has a dark past.

- The charming rake: a man who is charming, witty, and a bit of a womanizer.

- The kind and sensitive soul: a man who is gentle, caring, and compassionate.

- The cocky bad boy: a man who is arrogant, rebellious, and always getting into trouble.

Ethan could not claim that he was fully one of those above but he knew he was a little bit of everything, right from a very young age. He knew he was aloof and solitary, charming and witty, caring and compassionate, but he also knew he was a psychopath beneath all this adorable qualities and that he spared no one who angered him.

He took two steps closer, towards Erica who was bound to a chair with handcuffs.

"She has a brother in the military and her husband is Ethan DeLoach, yet she was an easy target? And you still think you will be any different because you are under the protection of the military?"

Erica was slightly surprised that Ethan DeLoach was Shikera’s husband as she had not detected that from working with Shikera. However, that could only cause a slight change as the harm had already been done to and there was nothing anyone of them could do to stop it.

"Yes, and if I’m in any way wrong, the worst you can do is to kill me! Liam Anderson’s daughter will die anyway and just so you know, her doctor won’t be able to save her because she was poisoned with potassium cyanide. If you’re really her husband, then you should hurry back to say your goodbyes,"

With a cold gaze, Ethan turned to Raymond and gave him a meaningful nod before walking out of the room with Ruthlyn.

"How are things going over there?" He asked, as soon as they were out of the room. It was a lie if he said he was not scared right now but the confidence which was radiating around Shikera’s doctor earlier, seemed to have rubbed off on him and was making him confident too that nothing would happen to her.

Ruthlyn’s voice sounded worried as she answered him,

"Dr Kyle says everything is going well on their side...for now. He adds that there is a seventy percent chance of everything ending well without any complications."

"You mean, she’s totally alright? Nothing is wrong with her?" Ruthlyn repeated again, as she stood in front of Ethan and Shikera’s doctor

"Of course, I just said that," Krystal answered patiently. "You won’t understand if I explain to you so just make do with the news that she will be alright. I will surely inform you if there’s anything else you need to be careful about."

Ethan nodded and pushed open the door to walk towards the sole bed in the middle of the room. The appearance of the woman in the bed was just the same as the time when she fell sick recently, with her chapped lips and pale face, her brown hair scattered on the pillow. He was still finding it hard to believe that all this happened because he was not observant enough of the people who surrounded her, and he knew this was because she was a reporter.

Sometimes, investigating people would expose him to some information that could either make him hate or pity them and these were emotions he didn’t want to waste on any reporter. That was why he had refrained from investigating her teammates up until the last moment but where had that landed them now?

Shikera was in bed, still unconscious while he could only stand beside her blaming himself over what had happened.

The door of the room was pushed open from outside and Ethan turned to see his parents walk in.

Raine rushed straight to the bed to check the girl lying in bed, and when she confirmed it was Shikera she looked up to her son, an hint of disappointment in her gaze.

"I asked you to protect her, didn’t I? Are you letting the past repeat itself just because of your baseless hatred that you always direct to the wrong person?" She asked, her harsh tone piercing into her son’s heart.

"You didn’t bother to pay attention to things concerning her because she is a reporter when she was not the one who wronged you..."

Chris intervened at this point when he noticed his wife was getting worked up and that his son was growing quiet, not that he had said anything since they came in anyway.

"It’s alright, Raine. This is not Ethan’s fault because—"

Raine interrupted him, "Because she’s a reporter and he didn’t know to pay more attention to her surroundings because he doesn’t want to have anything to do with reporters? Wasn’t that the same with Mignon, whom he ignored because he didn’t want to reveal his face to the world? Until she died!"

Chris was also quiet at this point, scared that any word of his would trigger his wife and he didn’t want that. He watched as his son stood up from his chair, a sad smile on his face.

"Mom can take care of her for now since I have something to do," Ethan said. He had only taken a step away from the bed when his mother reached out her hand to hold his.

"Ethan, why did you marry her anyway? I don’t see any love between the both of you, plus you guys still act as strangers when you’re together. Is there something I need to know?"

Removing his hand from hers gently, Ethan’s smile only widened before he replied, "The only thing you need to know, Mum, is that I need to leave now because I have to escort someone to the borders of the underworld. I have someone to kill, Mom."

His mother watched his back as he walked out before she turned to her husband, "Shouldn’t he be placed under watch, Chris? Ethan does not have a stable personality and that makes him the same as a psychopath. What do we do, Chris?"

Releasing a deep breath, Chris DeLoach simply stayed quiet as his head was aching him.

"Ethan is my perfect son... Ethan is my son and he’s perfectly alright," he chanted like a mantra in his head as if that would make sure everything was alright. But deep inside, he knew his son was not alright, and he had known that right from the time the boy was still young.

Outside the door, Ruthlyn switched off her phone to block off the incessant ringing of the device. She was standing guard here while Ethan and Raymond were doing what they knew how to do best, escorting those who put their family in danger to their end.

"Ruth!"

She heard a familiar voice behind her and turned to see Enoch, taking large strides towards her. Her eyes widened immediately and she ran to meet him, pulling him away from there when she finally got to him.

She only stopped walking when they got to an empty hallway, and she turned to face him.

"What are you doing, Enoch?! Your father and mother are here and you come looking for me too?!" She asked, her voice raised.

"Why wouldn’t I? Ethan has his wife here with him and Raymond, he doesn’t have a girlfriend so he only has himself to keep safe. But I have my fiancee standing outside the ward, in greater danger than any of the others. What if The Jordans have a backup plan?!"

Ruthlyn chuckled, as if the scenario Enoch laid down was something that would be impossible even if heaven were to fall down on earth.

"And what, Enoch? Don’t tell me you are here to protect me because that would be the biggest joke I’ve ever hear. You are only putting me in more trouble because of your presence here when everything is this hectic, plus your parents are..."

Fed up with her frequent mention of his parents, Enoch flared up.

"And what about my parents? Can’t you see how Shikera is comfortable with them even though it’s only an contract marriage that will end in a year? Shouldn’t you do the same since you will be their daughter-in-law in just a few months or so?" he asked, only to see Ruthlyn shook her head. 𝚏𝕣𝕖𝚎𝚠𝚎𝚋𝚗𝐨𝐯𝕖𝕝.𝕔𝐨𝕞

"I can’t, Young Master Enoch. Because our engagement is also arranged and it will end in a few months too," she whispered, looking straight into his ocean blue eyes while wondering how she let herself fall in love with a guy four years younger than herself.
