Chapter 57: The Second Wave

Standing on top of a building, Cael’s Black Lightning clone stared at the burning streets.

The city below looked like a fractured painting of fire and shadow. Flames crawled along shattered walls, licking broken windows and devouring what remained of storefronts.

The night sky was no longer black but stained with smoke, glowing faintly from reflected firelight. Embers drifted through the air like dying stars.

He frowned and thought,

’Was there such an event in the plot?’

But he quickly shook his head,

’Now is not the time to think.’

A faint pulse echoed in his mind.

He received a message from the main body.

With a step forward, he leapt into the air and vanished, his figure dissolving into darkness.

Moving from shadow to shadow.

Each transition was seamless, like slipping between cracks in reality itself.

The heat didn’t touch him. The firelight couldn’t quite catch him. He moved in the thin shadows between.

’Following the information the main body had given, Elowyn likely went to the Entertainment Street.’

He concluded and moved toward the destination.

Suddenly, intense heat surged through the street, distorting the air ahead.

His eyes widened as recognition struck instantly.

"That was... Elowyn?"

He was Cael’s clone and had never seen Elowyn before. This was his first time witnessing her presence.

He jumped onto a building and followed the red lightning from the shadows.

From above, the city revealed its wounds more clearly. Collapsed roofs, burning vehicles, and long cracks splitting through the roads like scars.

Cael saw five wraiths running away. Seeing Elowyn going after them, he decided to ask the main body to swap.

Then something unexpected happened.

Elowyn’s speed surged again.

Cael’s eyes weren’t able to keep up with her movements.

For a moment, she vanished completely, leaving behind only a trembling distortion in the air.

She killed all the wraiths in a single slash.

...

[SS-Rank Skill: Copy Activated]

[Do you wish to copy SS-Rank skill: Time Deceleration?]

[Yes] [No]

...

’She’s so cool, main body, you lucky bastard.’

Cael was momentarily dazed as he copied the skill. A strange sensation passed through him, like fragments of time slipping into place inside his mind.

’Did she have this kind of skill in the novel?’

’No, she didn’t have it.’

’Ugh, so complicated. First changes with Luke and now Elowyn.’

The burning city suddenly felt less predictable, like a story that had begun rewriting itself.

’Main body will go bald if this keeps up.’

’Whatever, it’s my problem. It’s the main body’s problem.’

’Hehe, main body, you unlucky bastard.’

He didn’t dare to follow Elowyn anymore. She might kill him, mistaking him for an enemy.

So, he stayed hidden, watching silently as Elowyn and her teammates swiftly left the Entertainment Street, their figures disappearing into the haze of smoke and fire.

...

Meanwhile, Cael moved toward the voice through the dust-filled streets.

The air here was thicker, heavy with ash. Visibility dropped with every step; the world reduced to silhouettes and flickers of flame.

"Help, somebody!"

Cael saw a group of people trapped behind a fallen wall at the entrance of a building.

The concrete slab had collapsed diagonally, blocking the exit completely. Cracks spread across it like a spider’s web, small fragments occasionally breaking off.

"Stay back."

Cael shouted.

Once the people stepped back, pressing themselves against the inner walls, their eyes filled with fear.

He raised his sword.

With a clean sideways slash, he cut through the fallen wall, carving a path wide enough for them to escape. The cut was unnaturally smooth, as if the structure had simply agreed to part.

Dust burst outward, filling the air.

"Come on, let’s go."

Then Cael started leading the people to the emergency bunker.

They moved quickly, stumbling over debris, shielding their faces from the smoke. A child coughed. Someone whispered prayers. Another kept looking back, as if expecting something to emerge from the flames.

Luckily, they didn’t encounter any wraiths.

Soon, they reached the destination.

The bunker entrance stood reinforced, its heavy doors open as guards ushered people inside. The interior lights glowed faintly, a fragile promise of safety against the chaos outside.

After watching the last of them enter, Cael turned away and moved toward another area to check if there were any people left.

The city still burned.

...

On the other side,

A wraith wearing a butler’s attire stood before more than fifty wraiths.

Unlike the others, his presence was composed and refined. His posture was straight, his movements controlled.

Yet the air around him felt colder, heavier, as if something invisible pressed down on everything nearby.

He was the same young wraith who had planned this incident.

A General-rank wraith.

Beside him stood an older wraith, its form slightly hunched, its aura dense and oppressive.

A Commander-rank wraith.

The General wraith gazed at the group and said,

"Our 1st commander is currently fighting the humans’ strongest person here. There is no human who can defeat us."

His voice was calm, but it carried unnerving weight, echoing faintly as if layered with something unnatural.

"Let’s go... kill every one of them for the honor of our late young master."

"KILL THEM ALL."

Instantly, all the wraiths moved.

Not like a crowd, but like a single will spreading across the streets.

They surged toward the Talent Showcase streets.

...

Since Elowyn was safe,

The Black Lightning clone decided to help anyone he came across.

He moved through the shadows again, scanning the streets, senses stretched thin.

Then he stopped.

In the distance, multiple wraiths were moving toward him.

Their figures flickered between shapes, their presence distorting the air around them. The flames nearby dimmed slightly as they passed.

For a brief moment, everything felt wrong.

The clone tilted his head slightly as he gazed at the incoming wraiths.

"Oh boy!"

...

A little far away from the Talent Showcase streets, a cab came to a slow halt.

The door opened as a boy stepped out.

White hair, brushed with a faint shade of light blue, swayed gently as he moved.

-STEP -STEP

He took a few steps forward.

The heat reached him first.

Then he saw the collapsed walls. Burning streets. Smoke rising like a black ocean into the sky.

He tilted his head slightly and muttered,

"Whoa... it’s too hot there."

A small smirk formed on his lips.

He began walking toward the burning streets without any concern.

The moment he stepped closer, the air around him changed.

A cold presence spread outward, subtle at first, then undeniable.

Flames that once roared fiercely began to shrink... then tremble... then bend.

Frost crept along the ground, thin veins of white spreading across cracked stone. The heat hissed as it met something it couldn’t consume.

Each step he took pulled the temperature down further.

Behind him, the burning glow dimmed.

Before him, the inferno parted.

"Let’s cool it down."

Cael’s Frostflame Clone has arrived.
