Chapter 24: Mission

It had been five days since Cael saw the "ghost." Since then, he hadn’t seen anything unusual.

Cael convinced himself that he had simply imagined it that night.

Over the past five days, Team Gray has been working on their team synergy.

Even though Cael was lazy and all, he still practiced with them nonetheless.

The team leader, Kira Crimson, was a spear user. She wielded the Lightning element and was a [Bronze 3] ranker on the verge of breaking into [Silver 1].

Aria Jasmine was a bow user and a mage. She could cast water and ice spells, and she was even capable of healing minor injuries. She was a [Bronze 2] ranker.

Lastly, Edwin Dove, who was also a [Bronze 2] ranker, used threads and daggers as his weapons. His element was Shadow.

All of them had gained a good understanding of each other’s capabilities, as they sparred frequently.

Of course, Cael only used the wind element.

But that was more than enough to defeat them.

Cael also met with his mother, Martha, from time to time.

Elowyn, you ask?

Apparently, her team had already begun taking missions, trying to accumulate as many Team Merit Points [TMP] as possible.

And yesterday, Cael received a message from Lucian Vayne, his brother.

He had asked Cael and his team to meet him at the cafeteria. All he said was:

"If you cooperate with my team to complete this mission, you’ll be guaranteed enough [TMP] to participate in the Competition for the Special Class."

Cael didn’t doubt Luke’s words. After all, he was the so-called righteous protagonist.

But Cael couldn’t help wondering how Luke had come across this information.

According to the novel, Luke and his team, composed entirely of girls, had slowly accumulated enough [TMP] over time to qualify.

So... what caused this change?

Cael could only assume that his own actions had triggered it; the intangible, unseen butterfly effect.

All he could do now was hope that this change would turn out for the better.

...

Inside the cafeteria,

Kira, Aria, and Edwin were waiting for Cael.

"So... what’s with the sudden meeting?"

Aria asked as she took a seat.

"No clue. Cael asked me to gather everyone."

Kira replied with a shrug as she sat down as well.

Mr. Flustered Romantic, Edwin, felt slightly awkward being the only boy at the table, but he still took a seat.

"Let’s wait," he said.

They all nodded.

Just then, Cael entered the cafeteria and walked toward them.

"Hey, Cael, why did you call us?" Kira asked.

Cael ordered a coffee as he answered,

"Someone wants to meet us."

The others exchanged curious looks.

"They’re here."

Cael pointed toward a silver-haired boy and a light-blue-haired girl.

Mira’s golden eyes swept across the cafeteria before pausing on Cael.

Cael raised his hand and gave them a small wave.

Luke nodded and walked over to Team Gray.

After taking their seats, Mira spoke first.

"I am Mirena Virella, and he is Lucian Vayne. He is also Caelir’s brother."

She didn’t give Luke the chance to introduce himself. As she spoke in his place, he could only offer a helpless smile and nod toward Team Gray.

Kira, Aria, and Edwin introduced themselves in return.

Cael took a sip of his coffee and said,

"Here’s the deal. They want us to cooperate with them on a mission. If we complete it, we’ll gain enough TMP to qualify for the Special Class competition."

Kira blinked in surprise.

"Is cooperating even allowed?"

Luke smiled at her question.

"They want us to collect TMP. They never said we couldn’t work together."

Before Kira could respond, Aria suddenly leaned forward.

"Wait—wa-wait. She said your name is Lucian Vayne, right? Are you the first ranker?"

"Yes, he is," Mira answered in Luke’s place again.

"And I’m third rank."

Kira, Aria, and Edwin stared at each other, then at Cael.

Still sipping his coffee, Cael simply nodded, confirming it.

Kira took a steady breath.

"Can you tell us about the mission?"

"Just a second," Luke said as he sent the mission details to Cael.

Cael forwarded the information to their team group.

Everyone leaned in to read the mission details with curiosity.

Even Cael was slightly curious about what kind of mission Luke wanted them to cooperate on.

The mission details appeared on their screens.

...

Main Objective: 50,000 Team Merit Points (TMP)

Bonus Objective: 30,000 TMP

...

Silence fell over the table.

Even the usual cafeteria noise seemed distant for a moment.

A hundred-year-old case. And a [Gold 1] culprit.

This wasn’t a beginner-friendly mission.

But the Team Merit Points were worth it.

Still...

Kira looked at Luke and asked,

"Our opponent is [Gold 1]. We can’t beat him."

Mira’s eyes flashed slightly as she replied,

"No worries. Luke and I are both [Gold 1]."

That eased some tension, but Kira wasn’t finished.

"Then... how will we split the TMP?"

Luke answered calmly,

"Forty thousand for your team. Forty thousand for ours."

Aria and Edwin both looked at Kira and nodded.

After a brief pause, Kira straightened.

"Alright. Team Gray is in."

Mira smiled and extended her hand.

"You won’t regret joining us. We’re Team Sparrow."

Kira accepted the handshake.

And just like that, Team Gray and Team Sparrow allied to hunt the Old Legend.
