Chapter 500: 500 Liu Banxia’s Personal Charm

Early the next morning, Liu Banxia looked at the deserted emergency center lobby and felt somewhat bored.

Today was the twenty-ninth day of the twelfth lunar month, basically a day when only emergency cases would come to the hospital.

He did a quick round downstairs and then went to the ward of the young woman from yesterday.

"How are you feeling today?" Liu Banxia asked with a smile.

"Much better. It doesn’t hurt anymore, and I have no issues with my breathing. Doctor, when will the swelling on my face go down completely?" the patient asked.

"It will take some time for it to go down completely, but you can be discharged today. Just be a bit more careful when you get home," Liu Banxia said.

"Remember, if you ever notice swelling again, be vigilant. Try your best not to get injured, and when you become pregnant in the future, make sure to have more check-ups."

"This is because pregnancy causes changes in estrogen levels. If they’re too high or too low, it might trigger your condition again. However, I believe a normal pregnancy should be fine."

"Doctor, we’re truly sorry about yesterday," the patient’s father said, embarrassed.

"It’s quite alright. Anyone would be anxious if their family member were ill," Liu Banxia said with a smile.

"Pack up and hurry home for the Spring Festival. Pay a little more attention to your diet, and you can still have a happy Spring Festival. From now on, try to maintain a relaxed mood as much as possible."

"What are you looking at? I’m talking to you," Liu Banxia said, turning to the young man. "You have to take good care of her. Listen to whatever she says. If she’s right, she’s right. If she’s wrong, she’s even more right. Emotional fluctuations, work stress, and the like can also trigger her symptoms."

This last sentence was addressed to the young man.

"Doctor, don’t worry. It’s always been ’whatever Xiao Yu says, goes,’" the young man quickly replied.

Everyone in the ward chuckled, while Sun Xiaoyu lowered her head in embarrassment.

Her boyfriend had also explained the detailed situation to her, and she was greatly relieved that Liu Banxia hadn’t told her parents. If he had, it would have been mortifying, even if they were her own parents.

Their two families could now look forward to a peaceful Spring Festival. The patients in the other wards, however, had to stay in the hospital through the holiday.

Most of the current patients were recovering from surgery. If their indicators hadn’t reached the required levels, Liu Banxia wouldn’t dare sign their discharge papers.

Any mishap, no matter how small, after a patient was discharged would be the hospital’s responsibility, and therefore his.

"Everyone, try to get more rest during the day. On days like these, the real challenge comes at night," Liu Banxia, who had just returned from his rounds, called out.

"Teacher Liu, why is that?" Huang Bo asked curiously.

"Heh heh, it’s the Spring Festival, so aren’t firecrackers set off? How many patients get injured by fireworks every year?" Liu Banxia asked with a grin.

"It’s the Spring Festival, so don’t people indulge in rich and spicy food? Patients with stone diseases, heart attacks, strokes—there will be plenty of them, you know."

"It seems none of you are paying much attention. I’ve asked you before: what kind of patients are most numerous during holidays? For the Spring Festival, for instance, gallstone patients usually start arriving around the second day of the new year."

"Teacher Liu, then why specifically at night?" Liu Yiqing asked.

"’Because you’re being dense,’ Liu Banxia said helplessly. ’Just as dense as always.’"

"When there’s only a little pain, no one pays it much mind. The more the stone gets stuck, the more it hurts. By the time the pain becomes unbearable, it’s usually nighttime."

"Since you two are so eager to learn, tonight you can be the designated doctors for stone cases. Our department is quite a walk from the extracorporeal lithotripsy center, so work hard, okay? Make sure you guide them properly."

"Alright, kids, let’s review our lessons. When a patient comes in with back pain, how should you proceed with the consultation? Which of you ’kids’ wants to raise your hand and answer?"

The other interns ignored his antics, but Qing Kewa enthusiastically raised her hand.

"Okay, our little friend Qing Kewa, please answer," Liu Banxia said.

"First, we conduct a physical examination to determine if the pain is in the lumbar spine or the kidney area. Then, perform an ultrasound. Is that correct?" Qing Kewa said.

"Correct! It’s such a simple question, yet the other ’kids’ couldn’t answer it. For lunch, I’ll reward you with a pig’s trotter," Liu Banxia declared.

Qing Kewa beamed. It didn’t matter what the reason was; she was getting a pig’s trotter to gnaw on. She could afford to buy them herself, but they just didn’t taste the same as when someone else bought them for her.

The other interns felt a pang of regret. It was just the standard admission procedure, after all. They had assumed Liu Banxia was just fooling around and hadn’t expected him to actually give out pig’s trotters.

"Next is a quick-fire question. If you discover a patient has a kidney stone stuck in the ureter, causing severe hydronephrosis, what’s the next step?" Liu Banxia asked abruptly.

"Extracorporeal lithotripsy," Huang Bo blurted out.

He’d already been dubbed the ’kidney stone specialist’; he had to get his hands on that pig’s trotter, no matter what.

"Is that all?" Liu Banxia asked with a smirk.

Huang Bo paused. Isn’t that it? The kidney already has severe hydronephrosis. If lithotripsy isn’t performed quickly to restore urine flow, the kidney could easily be damaged. With that much fluid buildup, the stone must be large and causing a complete blockage; medication to dissolve it would be too slow.

"This is why," Liu Banxia said, shaking his head, "I sometimes really don’t want to praise you."

"All you’re thinking about is removing the stone. Don’t you consider the patient’s vital signs? Pain will inevitably cause blood pressure to rise. If the patient has a history of hypertension, and it spikes even higher, then sure, just send them off to the lithotripsy center." Liu Banxia then looked at Huang Bo, letting out a series of dry chuckles, "HEH HEH... HEH HEH HEH... HEH HEH HEH HEH..."

Huang Bo raised his right hand. "It was my oversight. I’ve brought disgrace upon the emergency center. Let’s just have chicken legs for lunch; pig’s trotters are too expensive."

Liu Banxia nodded in satisfaction. "A good attitude in admitting your mistake. I’ll consider giving you a reprieve on the pig’s trotter punishment for one meal. Comrades, you must pay attention to underlying conditions. Regarding kidney stone patients, does anyone have anything further to add?"

Liang Xiaolin hesitated for a moment before raising her hand.

"Okay, little friend Liang Xiaolin, please answer," Liu Banxia said with a smile.

"You need to tell the patient to continue holding their urine; otherwise, they’ll just have to drink more water when they get to the lithotripsy center," Liang Xiaolin said sullenly.

"Wow, you truly are the expert in intubation! You even got this question right. You’re really something," Liu Banxia said, giving her a thumbs-up.

"This is also something we often overlook. Simply because we forget to give one extra instruction, the patient ends up wasting another half hour over there."

"Our hospital currently has only two lithotripsy machines. If it’s busy, patients will have to queue. You can imagine how long they might have to wait."

"So, comrades, we must remain meticulous. We can’t let our focus slip just because it’s the Spring Festival. You can relax a bit physically, but mentally, we must remain sharp."

"Then what about my pig’s trotter?" Liang Xiaolin frowned.

She was determined not to let this guy brush it off; she had answered correctly!

"I never said pig’s trotters were the standard reward. Come by my office later and grab a face mask," Liu Banxia said casually, then strolled off to the side.

Liang Xiaolin fumed. She already had a share of those masks! Qiaoqiao gave them to everyone; what did it have to do with him? She’d been tricked!

"This kid," Shi Lei began with a laugh, "who knows what he’s thinking up each day? He really gives them a hard time. It seems like no one can escape his clutches, right?"

"Currently, only Qing Kewa, I suppose," Wang Lei said. "Mainly because Qing Kewa is too earnest and doesn’t really care about these games."

"Don’t mind how much he teases them; they actually enjoy it. As long as they can get even the slightest one-up on Liu Banxia, they’ll celebrate it at mealtime."

"Tsk, tsk. I wonder if they’ll pass this ’tradition’ on to future interns and residents. If they do, things will certainly get lively around here," Wei Yuan commented.

Wang Chao shook his head. "There’s no doubt about it; it’s bound to happen. Even Su Wenhao’s personality is starting to resemble this kid’s, not to mention those two girls, Xu Yinuo and Liu Yiqing."

Everyone pondered for a moment and realized it seemed to be true.

These interns, much like Liu Banxia, were brimming with energy. Such demanding work hadn’t crushed them, perhaps because they were always ready to ’battle’ with Liu Banxia, which was possibly the only small joy in their internship.

However, Liu Banxia wasn’t just idly messing with them.

Like today, what seemed like playful banter was also a form of teaching. He was making them aware of things they might otherwise overlook, which in turn could provide patients with a better medical experience.

Many people rush to empty their bladders right after an ultrasound. But what happens when they get to the lithotripsy center? They need to check again to get a precise location for the stone.

Because as you walk, the stone might shift its position. If you still target the laser based on the previous marking, you could be firing at empty space for a long time.

"Think about it, you lot. Can we take the good aspects of Liu Banxia’s teaching style and promote them?" Zhou Shuwen asked, having also emerged by this time.

"Director, that’s too difficult," Wei Yuan said with a wry smile. "Who could possibly emulate Banxia’s style?" 𝗳𝚛𝗲𝕖𝕨𝕖𝗯𝚗𝚘𝕧𝕖𝗹.𝗰𝗼𝕞

"Sigh, educational training is such a headache. I’ll have to oversee it eventually. It’s going to be a major focus for the hospital in the coming days," Zhou Shuwen sighed.

"Director, if you’re not too concerned about your prized disciple, I think you should just let Banxia handle it," Wang Chao said with a smile.

"It’s not him I’m worried about; I’m afraid he’ll lead all the interns astray. Who knows when he’ll suddenly come up with some unorthodox idea?" Zhou Shuwen said helplessly.

This was something he was reluctant to admit: even though he was Liu Banxia’s mentor, he couldn’t completely control this fellow.

He could be incredibly serious at times, and then completely unreliable at others.

Look at him now, for instance, happily chatting and laughing with a patient’s family.

He could be quite mischievous at times, right? Yet, patients and their families trusted him immensely, and he was very popular. He never formally joined ward rounds, yet he was on familiar terms with the family members who frequently stayed with patients.

Perhaps this was his personal charisma. He tormented the interns to death, yet they still strongly supported him.
