The Enhanced Doctor-Chapter 393 is considered a blessing in disguise
Liu Banxia woke up in a daze. The room was quite bright, and it felt somewhat warm with the sun shining on his body. He was still a bit muddled and had no idea what was going on.
Slowly, his memory began to return, and he remembered what had happened the night before.
It seemed he had passed out in the car, without even being able to fully check the rewards from the system, and then ended up like this?
After adjusting to the light in the room, he saw Qiaoqiao biting her lip and staring at him. Her beautiful, large eyes were red, and he had no idea how long she had been crying.
Still feeling a bit weak, he waved at Qiaoqiao and opened his mouth, trying to speak.
Qiaoqiao was still angry, but before she could react, Liu Banxia’s arm wrapped around her, and then he decisively kissed her.
Startled by the sudden move, Qiaoqiao struggled a little but soon stopped.
"COUGH, COUGH, COUGH..."
A series of dry coughs interrupted the pair’s oblivious, passionate kissing.
Sitting up straight, Qiaoqiao shot Liu Banxia a seductive glare. It’s all this big scoundrel’s fault for making me embarrass myself! She then sneakily pinched a fleshy part of Liu Banxia’s arm. I’ve never been so embarrassed in my entire life!
Liu Banxia sat up in bed. Wow, there are actually quite a few people in the ward! They were all sitting on the sofa on the other side.
His future father-in-law, Qiao Xuezhi; his good friend, Qiu Huaili, and his family; and even his mentor, Zhou Shuwen, were all there.
"Sorry," Liu Banxia said awkwardly. "I was still groggy from sleep and thought I was at home."
He had been so focused on appeasing Qiaoqiao just now that he’d forgotten to survey his surroundings. Kissing his girlfriend in front of her father... how could that possibly sit well with him?
"Looks like you’re really okay now," Qiu Huaili said, nodding with a smile.
"Ming Yuan was here earlier too," Qiu Huaili continued. "He was really worried when he heard you’d had an accident. But Director Zhou said you were just overworked and needed some sleep, so he left."
Liu Banxia scratched his head, a bit embarrassed. "Teacher, you’re so busy. Why are you here watching over me?"
"I just finished a surgery a little while ago and came to check on you," Zhou Shuwen said with a smile. "You should rest properly for the next few days. Vice Director Li has already approved your leave, and I certainly can’t take that away from you."
"You just finished a surgery?" Liu Banxia asked, taken aback.
"It’s past one in the afternoon now!" Qiaoqiao chided. "What were you trying to prove by acting tough? If you’re injured, you should just stay in the hospital obediently."
"There, there, don’t be angry," Liu Banxia coaxed.
"Alright then, you seem fine," Zhou Shuwen said. "I’m going to get some food; I have two surgeries this afternoon. Let your interns know you’re okay as well. They’re also quite worried about you."
"Oh, and the patient from last night was successfully resuscitated and is no longer in life-threatening danger. He’ll be in the ICU for another day of observation and then can be moved to a general ward. So, don’t worry about it."
With that, Zhou Shuwen turned and walked out.
"Take care, Teacher!" Liu Banxia called after him.
Zhou Shuwen waved his hand. He had grown genuinely fond of this disciple of his, whom he felt he had almost picked up by chance.
He might have sounded nonchalant, but if it hadn’t been for Liu Banxia’s on-the-spot treatment last night—quickly identifying the bleeding point after the incision—the chances of saving that patient would have been incredibly slim.
Emergency procedures are a race against time, especially when a patient’s vital signs are extremely poor.
Even with all his experience, it would have been difficult for Zhou Shuwen to locate the blood vessel amidst so much blood. The hemostasis yesterday was so successful precisely because he could guide his hands by following Liu Banxia’s.
It could be said that if credit were assigned for saving the patient yesterday, Liu Banxia deserved the largest share.
The subsequent resuscitation was routine. Even if he and Li Mingwu hadn’t been there personally, any other cardiothoracic surgeon, with Shi Lei assisting, could have managed it.
"Uncle, you were just visiting, and yet I made you come here to watch over me. I feel terrible," Liu Banxia said, finally turning to Qiao Xuezhi.
Qiao Xuezhi nodded slightly. "I always thought being a doctor was a very ordinary profession. I had no idea it actually involved such great risks or that doctors could accomplish such remarkable things."
"You’re very capable. If I hadn’t seen you on the news, I wonder how long Qiaoqiao would have kept this from me. Treat Qiaoqiao well in the future. If you make her sad, I’ll hold you accountable."
"Dad..." Qiaoqiao protested, clearly unhappy.
Qiao Xuezhi rolled his eyes in resignation. It’s completely over. My daughter’s heart belongs entirely to this little rascal now.
Liu Banxia, however, was delighted. Does this count as a blessing in disguise for me?
His intuition was sharp; he could sense that his future father-in-law wasn’t particularly fond of him. Even buying him a car had really been to make Qiaoqiao happy.
But now, it seemed Qiao Xuezhi was genuinely accepting him—not just for his work, but as a son-in-law.
"Old Qiao, I’ve always said Banxia is a rare talent, a gem among men. If you’d missed out on him, you’d regret it for a lifetime," Qiu Huaili said with a laugh.
"Qiaoqiao’s the one with the sharp eye; she managed to snag my little bro," Qiu Huaili continued. "But Banxia, you need to be more careful in the future. Pay attention to your safety."
Liu Banxia nodded. "Yesterday was actually just a series of routine procedures. Perhaps I’ve been too stressed lately, and that’s why I got so exhausted. But it’s wonderful that the patient was saved; it was worth being tired."
"You’re just being silly," Qiaoqiao said, rolling her eyes at him.
"Hehe, but isn’t my silliness what you love about me?" Liu Banxia retorted with a goofy grin.
"Alright, alright, you two, give it a rest," Wang Jingxian teased.
"Doudou, come let your big brother hold you," Liu Banxia said, opening his arms towards Doudou.
The little fellow showed no hesitation; as soon as Wang Jingxian placed him on the bed, he scrambled into Liu Banxia’s arms.
"Since you both like children so much, you could get married sooner. Go ahead and have one, or even two," Qiao Xuezhi said earnestly.
"Dad! Why are you saying such things again?" Qiaoqiao exclaimed, flustered.
"Uncle, don’t worry, we’ll work hard on that," Liu Banxia replied with a smile. "You mentioned earlier seeing me on the news? What was that about?"
"There was such a major accident yesterday, of course the TV stations reported it," Qiaoqiao explained. "They had reporters stationed at the Second Hospital and the Municipal Hospital. Especially the Municipal Hospital, since the last patient there was the most critical."
"And you were performing surgery right at the hospital entrance. They could only film from a distance. We didn’t notice at first, but then we saw your name in the subtitles scrolling at the bottom of the screen."
"So, you all came over last night?" Liu Banxia asked. 𝘧𝓇ℯℯ𝑤ℯ𝘣𝓃ℴ𝓋𝑒𝑙.𝑐𝘰𝑚
Qiaoqiao nodded. "You were in that state; how could we not be worried? Fortunately... what was his name again? Oh, right, Su Wenhao was underneath and caught you, cushioning your fall. Otherwise, you would’ve slammed your head right on the ground."
Hearing Qiaoqiao’s description gave him a fright. From that height, onto such hard ground... if I’d really hit it directly, the consequences are unthinkable.
It seems yesterday’s attack really did affect me deeply; otherwise, my nerves wouldn’t have been stretched so taut. That, combined with the intensity and pressure of the on-site emergency treatment, pushed me to my limit.
Once I’d successfully stopped the bleeding from the patient’s major blood vessels, I knew the subsequent treatment would be straightforward. The moment I relaxed, my body just gave out.
"What are you thinking about?" Qiaoqiao asked, sitting down on the bed and taking Doudou’s small hand.
"Nothing much," Liu Banxia said with a smile. "I’m really fine now. There’s a little lingering fear, looking back, but just like when I went to the scene yesterday, I have no regrets."
"Uncle, Brother Qiu, Sister Xian, I’m not trying to boast or anything, but perhaps it’s because I’ve been a doctor for so long that my first thought is always for the patients."
Perhaps if I had been seriously injured, I might have regretted it. But I’m fine now. After a long sleep, I’ve completely regained my confidence.
"That’s why I have to remind you," Qiu Huaili said. "Saving people is fine, but you can’t just rush in headlong without considering the risks."
"Logically speaking, even though Old Qiao and I have known each other for over twenty years, and you could say our bond is closer, on this matter, I have to side with Qiaoqiao. Work and family—you can’t let one significantly outweigh the other."
"If you focus too much on work, it will affect your family. Conversely, if you focus too much on family, it will affect your work. While you’re working hard, you must always keep a special place in your heart for Qiaoqiao."
"Yesterday, Qiaoqiao was a wreck. She cried and cried, not saying a word, just holding your hand and constantly wiping her tears. Director Zhou even told her you were just exhausted and didn’t need an IV, only sleep."
"But Qiaoqiao was truly worried sick about you. She kept crying because you wouldn’t wake up and didn’t sleep a wink all night. This morning, your friends came by, and even some of the patients you’ve treated and their families."
"To be honest, as your older brother, even I was deeply moved watching all this. To have people care for you this much means you’re already very successful as a person. But while you enjoy that success, you still have to think about Qiaoqiao."
Liu Banxia nodded vigorously. "It won’t be like this in the future. I can’t guarantee I’ll be prepared for every eventuality, but I will always do my best."
"In the future, I won’t be alone anymore. I can’t just act on any whim I please; I have Qiaoqiao now. We’re a proper couple, even if we haven’t officially registered our marriage yet, we’re still a couple."
These were his heartfelt words. Although he hadn’t been with Qiaoqiao for very long, her care for him was undeniably real and profound.
"What nonsense are you talking?" Qiaoqiao said, lightly patting his arm.
Liu Banxia was truly happy. At last, I have some legitimate standing! Was it really that easy to earn my future father-in-law’s genuine approval?
His future father-in-law’s sole requirement for a son-in-law was someone who could take good care of Qiaoqiao. But me? It’s the other way around; I’m the one who needs Qiaoqiao to take care of me.
So, this fall was worth it. It truly was a blessing in disguise. Otherwise, gaining his approval would have been a much harder road, perhaps taking another two or three years.
