The Enhanced Doctor-Chapter 391 Fight with Injuries
(Thanks to my friend Chen Si, 121025081245993, Zhang Yongfeng, and Hong Dun Door Industry for the monthly ticket encouragement)
In the past, Liu Banxia was the official chief resident. As a prominent figure in the Emergency Center’s reception hall, he would undeniably draw extra attention.
But today was different. He was on officially mandated rest, temporarily no longer the chief resident, so people didn’t pay him much mind.
This was actually because he generally had a good rapport with the staff. Work was work, and life was life. Even though all his time was spent at the hospital’s Emergency Center, he still needed to carve out a little space for living.
Otherwise, if his nerves were constantly frayed, forget lasting a year—he wouldn’t even make it a month.
Everyone has their own way of coping; his was to liven up the atmosphere to relax his own nerves. When he relaxed, everyone else could too. This was another of his roles in the Emergency Center.
He chatted briefly with Shi Lei, who had just arrived, and after taking some ribbing, he retreated to the break room to rest.
With Shi Lei present, he truly felt relieved. They couldn’t have Li Mingwu personally overseeing the work here. After all, Li Mingwu was a proper Vice Director, and a highly skilled one at that.
However, while he was drifting in and out of sleep, he heard a sudden commotion outside. After a moment’s hesitation, he threw on his coat and stepped out.
"Zhou Qian, what’s happening?" Seeing everyone anxiously bustling about, Liu Banxia curiously asked.
"Um... Teacher Liu, there’s been a multiple-car pile-up. Our doctors are needed for rescue at the scene. Dr. Shi has already taken a team," Zhou Qian said.
"Vice Director Li specifically instructed us to keep an eye on you and ensure you get proper rest. With your fresh stitches, don’t you dare try to go to the scene." 𝗳𝚛𝗲𝕖𝚠𝚎𝚋𝗻𝗼𝕧𝗲𝐥.𝚌𝚘𝐦
Liu Banxia furrowed his brow, "Who is left here in the hospital?"
Zhou Qian glanced around cautiously. "Doctor Wang Chao is preparing with a team. Doctor Qi Wentai is still in surgery and hasn’t come out. We’ve also phoned the doctors who were off-duty."
"Are there any ambulances left?" Liu Banxia asked further.
"There is one more ambulance left," Zhou Qian said.
"Notify them to get ready. I’m going to the scene now," Liu Banxia stated.
"Banxia, just stay here. Vice Director Li is at the scene and the others should be there soon," Wang Ying rushed over.
"Sister Wang, the situation at the scene must be critical, with many injured. Our doctors will likely accompany the severely injured back, ready for immediate surgery," Liu Banxia said.
"I’m different. I can remain at the rescue site. My emergency response skills are still fine. An extra pair of hands is always a help, especially with how cold it is now."
Wang Ying frowned. "Then wrap an extra layer of gauze around your waist so you don’t snag the wound while moving."
She knew the scene was desperately short of doctors; otherwise, they wouldn’t be calling in everyone who was off duty. The accident site was closest to Second Hospital, and even several staff from the inpatient department had gone over.
After wrapping another layer of gauze around his waist, Liu Banxia grabbed the first-aid box and rushed towards the ambulance.
"Dr. Liu, going into the fray while injured, huh?" the driver, Xiao Wang, remarked as Liu Banxia climbed into the ambulance.
"So, you all knew about my condition? How big is the accident exactly?" Liu Banxia asked.
"Over ten vehicles piled up in the tunnel. I heard some people died instantly, and some cars are crushed underneath," Xiao Wang said.
Liu Banxia sighed internally. The conditions within the tunnel would make this crash scene even more complex.
Xiao Wang was a good driver. Other vehicles, recognizing an ambulance on an emergency run, quickly made way. They also saw ambulances from Second Hospital heading back as they drove. It took them less than half an hour to reach the scene.
"What are you doing here?" Li Mingwu, who was coordinating the efforts and performing triage, frowned upon seeing Liu Banxia alight from the vehicle.
"How could I stay put when something like this has happened? How many people are still trapped?" Liu Banxia asked.
"Still many. The city hospital team has already taken some of the lightly injured. We just sent off a pregnant woman and a patient with a skull fracture. This patient here, what’s their status?" Li Mingwu said, turning to Wei Yuan mid-sentence.
"Trapped between the steering wheel and the seat. Abdomen is rigid, suspect massive internal bleeding. We’ve started blood and fluid replacement," Wei Yuan reported quickly, nodded at Liu Banxia, then rushed towards an ambulance.
"Vice Director Li, I’m going in," Liu Banxia said curtly and ran towards the tunnel interior.
This was the first time he’d witnessed such a large-scale accident scene. Visibility inside the tunnel was terrible. A fire must have just been extinguished; the acrid smell of burnt plastic mingled with the dry powder from fire extinguishers, making the air difficult to breathe.
"Teacher Liu, what are you doing here?" Xu Yino, spotting him with his sharp eyes, exclaimed.
"Don’t worry about me for now. What’s the condition of this patient?" Liu Banxia asked.
"The victim in this car is the most critical one we’ve found. The car’s crushed flat. Luckily, he managed to recline his seat just in time. But his injuries are severe, and we can’t get him out yet," Xu Yino explained quickly.
Liu Banxia glanced around. Miao Rui and Su Wenhao were there, along with another doctor who he presumed was a general surgeon sent from the inpatient department.
"I’m Liu Banxia. I’ll take charge here for now. Firefighter comrades," Liu Banxia addressed the firefighter beside him, "can you dismantle the car roof and surrounding sections? Specifically, any visible parts that can be removed without causing further harm to the patient?"
"Doctor, we’ll do our best, but some components will require your medical team’s supervision during removal," the firefighter replied.
"Alright, here’s the plan. Xu Yino, Miao Rui, Su Wenhao—you three coordinate with the firefighters. Colleague," Liu Banxia said to the other doctor, "you and I will monitor the patient inside the car."
The three firefighters set to work, while Liu Banxia and the other doctor focused on observing the patient’s condition.
The idea was simple, but execution was extremely difficult.
The patient’s condition was incredibly complex. He was lying flat inside the car, the roof pressing down tightly on his body. Furthermore, the right-side door was crushed against the chassis, which naturally made removing the roof much harder.
Amidst the roar of the power saw, it took a full twenty minutes before they managed to pry open an edge of the roof on the driver’s side.
Liu Banxia quickly waved his hand to stop them; the current opening was just barely enough to conduct a preliminary examination of the patient.
He bent down and squeezed into the wreckage. The stitches on his side twinged with pain, but Liu Banxia ignored it for now, immediately placing his stethoscope on the patient’s chest.
"Breath sounds are faint. Suspect severe lung damage, possible fluid accumulation. Abdomen is distended—likely massive internal bleeding. And there are metal fragments—one from the doorframe and some other unknown pieces—penetrating his abdomen."
"I need to check his abdominal wounds. Miao Rui, more light! DAMN IT! These metal pieces are compressing a major vessel; it bleeds at the slightest touch! Get me an intubation kit! We need to insert a chest tube first, or he’ll aspirate on his own blood!"
The more Liu Banxia examined, the heavier his heart grew. Despite all his skills and ideas, faced with this patient, he felt utterly helpless.
All he could do now was proceed one step at a time, addressing the most critical issues first.
Miao Rui held up another flashlight, and Su Wenhao handed over the chest tube insertion kit. Tearing it open, Liu Banxia carefully cut away the patient’s clothing, performed a basic disinfection, and immediately began the procedure.
Miao Rui and the others watched intently. It was the same procedure they had learned and practiced, yet Liu Banxia’s execution had a breathtaking fluidity.
He didn’t meticulously measure; his hands found the correct position by touch alone. There wasn’t a hint of hesitation. The entire process was swift, smooth, and utterly mesmerizing to observe.
Being doctors themselves, they could instantly recognize the high quality of the procedure.
COUGH... COUGH...
As fluid drained from the thoracic cavity, the patient gave a slight cough. Everyone felt a small measure of relief; the immediate intervention had been successful.
"Central line kit! Prepare for blood and fluid resuscitation, then we’ll reassess," Liu Banxia continued.
Xu Yino and the others sprang into action. This was no time for admiration.
"Try not to worry. We’ve performed initial emergency treatment, and it’s helping. Our next step is to get you out of this car," Liu Banxia reassured the patient once the blood and fluids were being administered.
The patient nodded laboriously, opened his mouth but could not speak.
"Don’t be anxious. Just know that we’re rescuing you right now," Liu Banxia said.
"In a little while, we’ll need to cut more of your car apart. There will be a lot of noise and sparks. I’ll put my white coat over you as a shield, so don’t be afraid."
"Thank you..." the patient managed to speak.
Liu Banxia heard him clearly this time. He unbuttoned his white coat and gently draped it over the patient. Then, taking a flashlight, he examined the patient’s abdomen.
"Firefighter comrades, watch my hand signals. If I wave my hand, you must stop immediately. Understood?" Liu Banxia asked.
The firefighter looked at Miao Rui. "When the doctor waves, tap me on the shoulder."
"Okay, let’s proceed. The patient’s condition is relatively stable for now, at least. Let’s push forward," Liu Banxia said before ducking back into the wreckage.
Inside the car, the noise was even more deafening. This time, they were cutting away the section of the roof that had been partially pried open, to create more space for the ongoing rescue.
This cut was slightly quicker; with the firefighters working together, it took less than fifteen minutes.
However, Liu Banxia, cramped inside the car, was in genuine discomfort. His head was ringing from the vibrations. Moreover, his contorted posture put pressure on his waist wound, which now throbbed with a piercing, unbearable pain.
His vision was clearer now, but Liu Banxia’s headache intensified. The problem remained those two metal pieces embedded in the patient’s body. Even the minor vibrations from before had caused more blood to seep out.
He didn’t know if the patient could hold on until he could figure out a way to free him. This was truly a race against death.
