Chapter 180: [180] Black Box

Knock Knock—!

The pounding on the door came again. This time it was lower, as though the person behind the door was afraid to offend those inside the room.

Eliron stood up. "Pardon me..."

He walked towards the door and opened it, allowing two maids into the room.

The first one was holding a tray with a freshly brewed cup of coffee atop it, while the second woman had a black box in her hand.

"Forgive me baron, I have a long day ahead of me so I requested a cup of coffee. I hope it doesn’t cause any offense?"

The baron sighed. "Goodness, the timing of the delivery leaves little to be desired. But there is no issue."

Cassie smiled. "You really know how to keep people on edge don’t you?" She asked, a small smirk on her face.

Eliron shrugged. "It’s just a cup of coffee, it’s nothing that serious." He replied, mirroring her smile.

The truth was that this was actually planned by both of them. The black box at least, as for the coffee, Eliron really needed the morning boost. His mana training had been getting far more grueling.

The woman placed the coffee on Eliron’s side of the table and bowed respectfully.

"Ahh, thank you."

The second woman then placed the box right next to the coffee, before both of them exited the room.

Eliron clicked the door shut then walked back to his seat, leaning back on the chair and crossing his legs.

He took the cup of coffee, savouring its invigorating scent. Just from the scent alone, he already felt awake.

Everyone on the table stared at him as he brought the cup to his lips and took a long, dragged out sip.

"Ahh~ delicious. Yen, you should really try this..."

Yennefer had been oddly quiet since she arrived, and it was probably in relation to Artie, but regardless, she grabbed the cup and took a sip as well, nodding in approval.

"It’s really good."

"Exactly, we should probably kidnap one of those maids, don’t you think?"

"..."

The baron and his men shared looks among themselves. Cassie laughed, Duke seemed confused, Ash had a serious look on his face while Artie looked bored.

"My lord, why must you torture us so?!" The baron complained, massaging the bridge of his nose.

"Oh? Pardon my manners my lord. Shall I get the maid to make you all some coffee as well."

"Not the fucking coffee! You said you know who the culprit is, and that box, do you plan on revealing what is within it??"

"Ahh, that is what you mean."

Eliron smiled. His deliberate sluggishness, the maid’s appearance and the mystery box. It was all just an act.

While he was pretending to savor the cup of coffee, and yes, it was actually good... he was also taking note of the reaction of the baron’s men.

The culprit right now was probably itching to know what was within the box, up to the point that he could no longer hold it in.

From their reactions, Eliron had narrowed down the suspect, confirming the results of Divine Sinners Scale.

Now he was a hundred percent sure of who leaked the information. But patience was the key when dealing with cases like this, there was no need to reveal his cards so early.

The reason was simple. The DSS was solid, but it would not be enough to convince the baron that his loyal subject had betrayed him.

Those people were like family to him, people he had confided in during his darkest hours. Eliron needed solid, undeniable proof.

"Alright then!"

Eliron placed the box in front of him and caressed it like it was a bar of gold.

"Within this box lies the answer we have been looking for. The person who planned to take over the barony with you later brother, the person who compromised the baroness’s safety..."

Eliron’s gaze moved between the four men.

"That person’s name—"

The baron was at the edge of his seat, the head knight was sweating buckets, the butler looked ready to pounce on whoever was declared a traitor, but the young knight was as calm as a lake.

Eliron smiled. "His name...

"Will have to wait."

"Fucking hell—"

"Shit—!"

"On God’s good name."

The baron and his men cursed, while glaring at Eliron.

’This is really fun, hehe.’ Eliron giggled in his mind.

"What is the meaning of this? My patience runs thin!" The baron barked.

"Forgive me my lord, trust me, it is all part of the process." Eliron spun the box around. "This box does indeed possess the answer we seek, but it is going to take time."

"Take time? What do you mean?" The butler asked, staring at the box.

"The culprit communicated with both young master Duke and Marcus via letters. Inside this box are the letters we could gather, those that were not burned at least."

The baron raised a brow. "I thought the letters were anonymously sent?"

Eliron nodded, his tone turning a bit more serious. "Indeed they were. But there is nothing in this world that does not leave a trace."

He wrapped his hand around Yennefer’s shoulders and pulled her to himself, surprising her.

"My companion here happens to be a priest gifted with the skill, prophecy. I would argue that there is not a single soul on the continent that matches her prowess." He said in a serious tone.

’Yeah, that was a big, fat lie.’

Yen stared at Eliron, and then...

"Kek—"

Eliron’s eyes widened. ’Hmm? What was that sound?’

"Hehehe—"

’Hehe???’ He gave Yen a deadpan look when he felt her body tremble as she tried to hold in her laugh.

She had seemed down earlier, but the way Eliron had lied with such a straight face was apparently too much to bear.

Even though they had discussed this the night before!

Just as she was about to explode, Eliron placed his hand over her mouth and squeezed tightly.

"Ahahaha—" He laughed nervously. "Not now Yen, no need to read the future of this men, that is a breach of privacy!"

"Mmmm—!" Yen murmured, her voive barely getting out.

"MMMMM!" Patches of blue began to blossom on her cheeks, her brain running low on oxygen.

Eliron turned her to face him then screamed to her with his eyes.

’Don’t mess this up, Yen!’

She frowned, rolling her eyes. Then slwoly, she nodded.

"Are you okay now?" Eliron whispered sharply.

"Mmmhm!"

"Haaaa—! She took in a deep breath when Eliron finally let go, glaring at him.

But thankfully, there was no laugh. Yen held it in. She put on her most serious face, which was rather cute to see, folding her hands on the table.

"Uhum... Indeed, tales of my renown has not spread through the continent because I am restricted to operating in Artaris."

The room was silent...

"Are you saying..." the baron voiced.

"Indeed baron. She will trace these letters back to the source, and in twenty four hours, we will have the culprit in our grasp."

The baron nodded, a look of approval on his face. Then he smiled.

"Excellent! At first, I thought you were all talk, but to have such a powerful ally, I am truly impressed."

Eliron nodded approvingly.

"Duke, after this meeting, ensure that the entire estate is put on lockdown, nobody leaves, no body comes in without my express permission."

Duke bowed. "Yes father."

"Is there anything else you need?" The baron asked Eliron.

Eliron stretched and yawned. "No, the meeting is over. Please have a good rest of the day."

The baron was about to stand up when Eliron quickly added.

"But if I may impose, my lord. I came to Kingsbridge for business, and time is not on our side."

"Since the issue of the traitor will soon be resolved, may I have a meeting with you and your closest confidants?"

The baron seemed surprised that Eliron would bring it up at such a time, but he agreed nonetheless.

"I guess that is fine, you’ve been a big help so far, the least I can do is hear what you have to say."

"Thank you." Eliron replied curtly.

The two knights and the man in charge of sending letters left the room, leaving only the baron’s family and the butler behind.

These three were the backbone behind the barony. Cassie was basically the minister of finance, the butler was the baron’s personal advisor and right hand man, and Duke was the heir.

Once they were alone the baron asked, "So? What is it you will like to discuss? Have you been facing any difficulties with business in our barony?"

Eliron smiled. "Artie..."

The red hair raised her hand, unleashing a burst of light that swirled around the room before vanishing into nothing.

Eliron then sat up straight, his gaze turning cold.

"Now that we are sure that no one is listening in on us..."

"Baron, It is time we had our real meeting. I assure you, one of the three men that just left is the traitor—"
