Chapter 139: The Banquet and the Blundering Spy

And to top it off, his parents in this life were wealthy merchants in the city, with distant ties to the city lord.

His life wasn’t that different from before, except his new family was even more indulgent with him.

That’s why this was the first time he’d ever done anything sneaky behind someone’s back.

If anyone who knew him found out, they’d probably be completely shocked — they might even ask if he could really pull something like this off.

Don’t ask. If you ask, the answer is just tears.

This was his first time doing something like this — and hopefully the last. It was truly nerve-wracking.

Fortunately, the torment didn’t last long. While Ke’Oth and N’zall were discussing the banquet details, everyone’s attention was focused on them. And when the two demons finished talking, all eyes shifted to the Demon King Anos and the steward Sebastian.

The result? No one had any attention left for him.

And for Eoryun... that was perfect.

Eoryun couldn’t help but wonder if things were going a little too smoothly. The realization hit him belatedly — had everything really gone just the way he hoped, almost unbelievably so?

He wanted to know where the Ice Flower was being kept — and suddenly, that very detail was revealed in front of him during a conversation among the demons.

He had been thinking of finding the perfect opportunity to carry out his plan — and then, just like that, the demons decided to hold a banquet.

And with a banquet taking place, security at other areas would naturally be looser, with only the banquet venue having tighter protection.

Wasn’t this all a little too coincidental? So coincidental that he couldn’t help but feel a seed of suspicion take root.

A hint of anxiety crept into Eoryun’s heart, but thankfully, he still remembered to maintain a calm expression and not give himself away.

Coincidence or not, he still had to go through with his plan.

Opportunities like this didn’t come often.

Who could predict the future? Who could guarantee there would be another chance as perfect as this one?

And most importantly — how long would Illiya and the others even remain in the demon realm?

He couldn’t possibly find an excuse to stay behind alone after Illiya left.

That would surely raise suspicion.

In short, all he could do now was seize the opportunity laid out in front of him.

...Though his plan would go smoothly, right?

It should go smoothly, right?

Why was he suddenly getting a bad feeling about all this?!

After Anos left, Illiya took the opportunity to make a graceful exit as well, using a casual excuse to bid farewell to the others.

With something interesting weighing on their minds, everything else could be pushed to the side — and Illiya was confident the others were thinking the same thing.

Sure enough, the moment he spoke, the others also began to take their leave.

Quadracile coughed deliberately and said, "Cough, cough, cough — it’s late and getting damp out here. I’d better head back. You all should get going too — health is the most important thing."

It was as if Quadracile’s cough had triggered some hidden signal.

The other demons quickly latched onto his excuse and began talking all at once.

Chotchino said, "Quadracile, you really should head home. Look at you, already coughing."

Pinison chimed in, "Exactly, exactly — Quadracile, go on back. It really is getting late. Let’s all call it a night. There’ll be plenty more chances to spend time together in the days ahead."

Titus didn’t say anything, but he nodded in agreement, clearly supporting Chotchino and Pinison’s sentiments.

Ke’Oth and N’zall exchanged a glance, then promptly declared the gathering dismissed.

Right after saying that, the two of them immediately tore open teleportation scrolls and vanished on the spot.

From the time they made the announcement to the moment they disappeared, barely a minute had passed.

Their swift, practiced movements made it hard not to suspect they’d been planning this retreat all along.

What followed was a chain reaction — the rest of the demons began activating their teleportation scrolls one after another, leaving Illiya speechless.

He couldn’t even find the words to describe the complicated emotions he was feeling right now.

Illiya resisted the urge to make a snarky remark.

Instead, what filled him was a strange sense of relief — finally, some information from the books about the demon race on the continent had proven reliable.

And that was this: demons really, truly hated socializing. They were desperate to flee from it.

There was one thing Illiya still couldn’t quite wrap his head around — demons were the kind of beings who, upon seeing someone powerful, would immediately charge in and challenge them to a fight, regardless of whether they even knew the person.

Every action they took screamed "socially terrifying lunatics." And yet now, the way they were scrambling to escape social interaction... it showed a complete contradiction.

Demons — they really were a strange, strange bunch.

The days passed quickly, and in the blink of an eye, it was nearly time for the banquet to be held.

Illiya had done nothing of significance over the past few days, he just hiding his presence and quietly following behind the Demon King Anos like an invisible shadow.

He resembled an unnamed court historian from the ancient empires of the continent, one who remained always at the side of the supreme emperor.

Though Illiya didn’t actually record history, his behavior was no different from that of a historian.

Aside from eating, drinking, and resting, he was constantly by Anos’s side, acting as a silent observer.

No one questioned his actions; everyone silently chose to ignore them, as if this arrangement was perfectly natural.

Initially, Illiya hadn’t planned to do this.

However, for some reason, he suddenly recalled the books written on the continent about the demon race.

None of those books could be considered reliable.

Judging the Demon King’s actions during his reign based on those texts was less effective than simply following him in person to observe.
