Chapter 90: Chapter 90 Under Attack

Evelyn’s POV

Eryx glanced at the cars gradually surrounding us through the rearview mirror.

He nodded grimly, his hands tightening on the steering wheel.

"I’ve noticed. Don’t worry, I’ll lose them."

I told him, "Send a mind-link to our security team."

The convoy of black vehicles began closing in from multiple directions. With three children in the car, Eryx had to drive defensively, unable to execute the more aggressive evasive maneuvers he might have employed if I were alone.

Rhys clutched my arm, his face pale with fear. "Mom..."

I pulled him close, shielding him with my body. "Don’t be afraid, Rhys. Mom’s here."

Little Alexis’s eyes brimmed with tears, but she stubbornly held them back. She squeezed my hand and said with fierce determination, "Don’t be scared, Mommy."

My heart swelled with pride and pain at her bravery.

My barely three-year-old daughter was trying to comfort me.

"That’s right, sweetie. Mommy’s not scared, and you don’t need to be either," I assured her, stroking her soft hair.

I glanced at Rowan, who was unusually quiet. "Rowan, are you okay?"

He was hunched over his smartwatch, fingers working furiously across its screen. "I’m fine, Mom. I just sent our location to Dad. He’ll come save us."

My chest tightened. I didn’t have the heart to tell him that Calvin was out of the country, far beyond reach. Instead, I nodded. "Yes, Dad will help us."

After checking all three children’s seatbelts, I tried to keep my voice steady. "If you’re scared, close your eyes. Mom will protect you. We’ll be safe soon."

With the children temporarily reassured, I turned my attention to the situation outside. Our security detail had engaged with several of the pursuing vehicles, but one particularly determined car was still gaining on us.

"They’ve planned this well," Eryx muttered. "Our backup is about ten minutes out. Just keep the children safe and let me handle this."

"Be careful," I whispered, my body tense as I prepared to shield my children if necessary.

Just as our security team managed to intercept the vehicles behind us, we rounded a bend to find the road ahead blocked by at least a dozen more black cars.

"Eryx, watch out!" I shouted as the vehicles accelerated toward us. 𝗳𝐫𝚎𝗲𝚠𝚎𝗯𝕟𝐨𝘃𝚎𝗹.𝗰𝗼𝗺

The car aimed directly for our side. Eryx yanked the steering wheel hard to the right, avoiding the collision by inches. Our car tilted dangerously, nearly rolling over before Eryx managed to regain control.

Alexis’s eyes filled with tears, but she bit her lip hard, stubbornly refusing to cry.

My heart pounded against my ribs so violently I felt sick. I wasn’t afraid for myself, but the thought of my children being injured or worse made my blood run cold.

Our security team caught up and engaged the ambushers, ramming several vehicles off the cliff edge with sickening crashes. The mountain road became a battlefield of screeching tires and crunching metal.

Suddenly, additional vehicles emerged from hidden positions on the mountainside above us. I pulled the children closer, believing we were doomed. However, I soon realized these newcomers were targeting our attackers, not us.

One of them approached our car, offering me a phone respectfully.

"Dr. Blackwell, we’re from the Bloodbane Pack. Alpha Calvin was concerned for your safety and sent us. He wishes to speak with you."

Seeing my skepticism, he turned the phone screen toward me. Calvin’s face appeared, tense with worry.

"Are you and the children hurt?" he asked urgently.

I quickly checked each child before answering, "We’re all fine."

Calvin clearly looked relieved. From what I could see of the background, he appeared to be at an airport, with what looked like a hastily chartered plane waiting behind him. I’d later learn that he’d been in the middle of closing his largest acquisition deal of the year when he received Rowan’s alert and immediately arranged the fastest possible flight back.

The Bloodbane Pack members efficiently rounded up our would-be attackers, binding them and lining them up on the roadside.

"Dr. Blackwell, we’ll get to the bottom of this," one of Calvin’s men assured me. The implication was clear. The Bloodbane Pack would handle the interrogation personally.

My gaze swept over the captured men, cold and assessing. When my eyes landed on a man with a horrific scar disfiguring his face, I felt a shock of recognition.

I narrowed my eyes, studying him more carefully. He noticed me staring and lifted his head, looking at me with a dangerous gleam in his eyes and a disgusting smile.

That’s when it clicked. Something about him seemed familiar. That animalistic stare reminded me of Clara. And then I remembered exactly where I’d seen him before.

"You’ve noticed something," Calvin said through the phone, catching the change in my expression.

I turned my attention back to the phone, my voice steady despite the adrenaline still coursing through my veins. "I recognize that man with the scar. He’s in the files Jackson sent me about the Calypso Pack."

Calvin’s voice turned deadly cold as he addressed his men through the phone. "Take them to the dungeons immediately. I want them alive for questioning." His tone brooked no argument, and I watched as the Bloodbane Pack members efficiently dragged the captured attackers toward their vehicles.

"I’m boarding the plane now," Calvin continued, his voice softening slightly as he spoke to me. "I’ll be back within hours. I’m deploying additional pack members to guard your residence immediately—they should arrive before you do."

He paused, then asked, "Can I speak to the boys?"

I handed the phone to Rhys first, then Rowan. Calvin’s voice became gentle and reassuring as he spoke to each of them, promising he’d be home soon and that they were safe now.

When the call ended, I could see the storm brewing in my reflection.

As soon as I returned to Ravenshade, someone knew my whereabouts and wanted to eliminate me and the children. This attacker was Clara’s person, but her rapid access to information made me suspicious.

Could there be a spy among my people?

I pulled out my phone and sent a message to Jackson.

"Keep a close eye on the Calypso Pack’s movements. Report to me immediately if there’s any news."
