Chapter 108: Chapter 108 The Price of Saving a Life

Evelyn’s POV

The study’s waiting area looked exactly like I remembered it. It was spacious and nicely decorated with black leather couches. My light blue throw pillows were still on the sofa, a painful reminder of my old life here. The coffee table was covered with pastries and fruit, all arranged perfectly.

"The butler remembered what you like," Calvin said, pushing the tray toward me. "Try some."

The Bloodbane Pack’s pastry chef was famous, and I hadn’t eaten anything this good since I left this house. Still, I sat down and purposely ignored the food.

"Get to the point, Calvin."

He sat in the armchair across from me.

"Clara is pregnant."

My head shot up. "And you want me to leave her alone because of that?"

Calvin started to speak, but I cut him off before he could finish.

"Are you protecting her because the baby is innocent, or because it’s yours?" I asked, each word sharp and cutting.

The tension grew thick between us.

Calvin closed his eyes and took a deep breath before answering.

"What would Clara’s baby have to do with me?" He opened his eyes, their darkness intense. "Evelyn, why do you keep accusing me of things I never did? I’ve told you over and over that I never cheated on you."

I quickly pulled myself together and looked directly at him. "What you did was the same as cheating, even if you never actually did it."

Calvin’s eyes locked onto mine with frightening intensity. Those expressive eyes that had once made me fall for him completely. The lights above caught their depths, making them shine like a night sky full of stars.

I looked away, refusing to let them draw me in. But Calvin leaned forward and reached for my hand. I pressed back against the sofa, trying to avoid his touch. I suddenly felt trapped in the small space between the sofa and coffee table.

He kept trying, gently opening my clenched fist. His long fingers slid between mine, locking our hands together in a way I couldn’t escape.

"Evelyn," he said softly, "I never planned to leave you."

Even though he was crouching down, his eyes still looked down at me from above. But there was something surprisingly humble about the way he positioned himself. The powerful Alpha, head of the Bloodbane Pack, was lowering himself in front of me.

"Can we talk calmly?" he asked. "Just talk?"

The clock on the wall kept ticking, filling the silence between us.

When Calvin finally spoke, his voice drew me in unwillingly.

"Clara saved Rhys’s life."

As he told me the story in his calm way, I felt more sick than touched.

"Rhys was almost kidnapped," he explained. "Clara fought the person trying to take him and got stabbed with a knife. That’s how she saved our son. The knife hurt her uterus badly. The doctors say she might never be able to have children. That’s terrible for any woman."

Calvin watched me carefully, keeping his voice deliberately flat. He was clearly worried I might mistake any emotion for feelings toward Clara.

I nodded slowly. "How touching."

A bitter smile appeared on my face as I asked, "And so?"

My reaction clearly wasn’t what Calvin had expected. He thought I would be shocked, or forgive him, or at least show some sympathy. He didn’t expect the cold doubt I was showing him.

He held my hand tighter and frowned.

I looked straight into his eyes and went on, "Am I supposed to be grateful forever? Should I treat her like some kind of goddess because of this?"

A life debt.

If I had known this truth when it happened, I would have been grateful to Clara. But now? It just felt like another cruel joke in the comedy of my marriage.

"Should I just ignore how she’s been circling around my mate like a vulture, just because she saved my son?"I asked, looking directly into his eyes.

Calvin’s jaw tightened. "Evelyn, she saved our child’s life."

"And I nearly died giving birth to those children!" I snapped, tears suddenly burning in my eyes. "I spent four hours fighting for my life in that delivery room, Calvin! Where was your gratitude then?"

I saw something crack in his perfect Alpha composure. He reached for my face, but I jerked away.

"That I understand, but—"

"But nothing! You promised Clara three favors for saving Rhys. What about the promises you made to me? Your wife? Your Luna?" My voice broke on the last word.

The word "Luna" left us both silent. We both knew what a joke that title had been. An Omega Luna who couldn’t shift, couldn’t connect with the pack through mind-links. His mother Diana made sure I never forgot my inadequacy.

"You can’t even shift," she’d say. "How will you lead the female wolves? You’re making my son look weak in front of other packs."

Even Zeon, Calvin’s loyal Beta, only referred to our marriage as "a strategic alliance between packs" rather than a union of mates.

Calvin’s face showed genuine pain now. "Evelyn, please don’t cry—"

But the tears were already falling. I tilted my head back, refusing to let them drop, but it was too late. Every tear felt like a confession of how pathetic I’d been, waiting for scraps of affection from a man who saw me as a political necessity at best, an embarrassment at worst.

"You kept three promises to her," I said through gritted teeth, "but what about all the promises you made to me?"

Each word hit him. He didn’t even reach for the tissues on the coffee table, instead using his fingertips to frantically wipe my tears away.

"I’m sorry," he whispered, his voice hoarse. "I didn’t know I was causing you so much pain. I’ve never experienced feelings this deep before. If I had known..."

He cradled my face in his hands. "I was wrong. Terribly wrong."

His eyes swirled with guilt, and for a moment, I almost felt sorry for him. Almost.

I suddenly pulled away from his touch and shoved him hard. Calvin stumbled backward, his lower back hitting the coffee table. The plates of pastries clattered loudly, breaking the tense atmosphere.

I wiped my tears roughly with the back of my hand, taking several deep breaths to control my sobs.

"The mighty Alpha Calvin Wolfe, admitting he’s wrong?" I laughed coldly. "That’s a first."

Learning that he’d helped Clara because she saved our son brought me no joy.

Calvin was watching me intently, seeing only the sadness in my eyes. He had no idea how things had gotten this bad. His fantasy of reconciliation was bursting like a soap bubble.
