The Devil Of Probability-Chapter 51: The Devil And His Angel
October was coming to a close, and with it, nights became colder. Contrary to this, Simon had become softer to his squadmates. In the past few weeks, they had hosted a multitude of events due to the fact that there wasn’t much work to do.
Being the Investigation team, Simon had put all their cases to a close within his time there already. It really made him wonder how incompetent the team was.
With him on the team, they were unstoppable on paper. However, the more he looked at it, his team might not have been fit for Investigations. The exceptions to this were himself, Evelyn, and Silas.
Although Silas didn’t put in much effort, when he did, it was levels above Simon’s. Simon obviously wasn’t jealous of this fact; it was how the world of Signators worked.
Silas was an S-rank, while Simon was an A-rank; it would only take a matter of time before Silas surpasses him in everything he did. Additionally, when given Signators as gifted as Silas, the bureau did everything in their power to attend to them.
Thus, Simon had already concluded that they set him up with Evelyn because of how laid back she was as a Captain. Had he been on any other team, he might’ve been kicked out already.
Besides this, as Leo said himself, he was fit for an Attack Squad due to his signature. Ezra also fell into this category, as he was only there for defense. When it came to Elliot, however, Simon drew a blank.
There wasn’t much he knew about Elliot, and the only lead he had was the Earth Scale Eel cave.
(Maybe I should try to ask Alina for some answers. But that might just cause more problems for me. Sigh, she and Evelyn are so odd.)
Simon looked to his right, his face a mixture of grimace and disdain. He didn’t know how, but he somehow let Evelyn drag him to a party at Leo’s house.
Apparently, these were rather common and would happen every holiday. Not that Simon cared; he was not quite fond of parties in the first place. If I had to say the reason he went in the first place, it was only to stop Evelyn’s begging.
So here he was, wearing red horns that he thought were awfully silly, hiding in some secluded corner. That is, if you could call avoiding something and hiding from it the same thing.
No matter how he felt, he had to admit the food was delicious. This was the reason the parties were hosted at Leo’s in the first place. Of course, his mother had cooked it all.
"Ah! Si! I’ve been looking all over for you. Come on, even Naomi is enjoying herself!"
Evelyn gestured for Simon to follow, but he just glared at her with an arched eyebrow for a moment. Like Simon’s "costume," hers was minimalistic. She wore her regular outfit, along with white feathers on her back and a halo headpiece.
"Aren’t we too old for this? Especially Halloween parties. Sigh. It’s like high school but worse."
"What? You’re never too old to have fun!"
"...This isn’t fun, it’s torture."
Evelyn giggled at Simon’s words before sitting down next to him.
"You know, Naomi got into a really heated debate with Leo’s mom. She thinks her cooking is better, but that might be hard to challenge." 𝗳𝗿𝐞𝕖𝘄𝗲𝕓𝗻𝚘𝚟𝕖𝐥.𝚌𝕠𝕞
"Mmmm, I’d say it’s a little worse, not to say it’s bad."
"You think so?"
Simon nodded in response, keeping his eyes forward. Although he was still in the living room, it was hard to notice him with his outfit. If not for his platinum blond hair, he would just be another shadow.
Evelyn moved closer to Simon, making him turn his head. It wasn’t due to her closeness; to his surprise, he didn’t have a problem with this.
Rather, he had noticed a change in her perfume. The air around her carried the sharp scent of resin, and an undernote of something floral he couldn’t describe. His first instinct was to ask about this change of scent.
He opened his mouth to speak, then swiftly closed it again.
(No, that would be creepy.)
He paused for a few moments, pushing the thoughts down. After a while, he finally said:
"Evelyn, you’ve never told me much about your parents."
"Oh, right! They live in Europe, so I don’t get to see them much... But I can introduce you sometime in January. They come out to see me every new year."
"I suppose that’s fair, seeing how I’ve met Naomi and all."
"Mhm! She’s really nice! She even let me touch her medals!"
"...She what?"
Simon knew for a fact where she kept these, and it was inside his house.
(When did they find time for that? Did they talk while I was out somewhere?)
He faced forward again, with a soft exhale. Evelyn copied his movements, an awkward silence spreading between them. This silence had been around for many nights two months ago, but it hadn’t returned since.
Evelyn had realized she said too much, and Simon was not entirely fond of this. If he had met Naomi, although he didn’t want to admit it... It was embarrassing for someone else to see a younger version of him.
Simon did not bother doing anything else for the next couple of minutes. What started as an awkward silence became comforting. Both he and Evelyn sat still, enjoying each other’s company without a word.
"Hey, I haven’t really seen Leo tonight... What do you think he’s doing?"
"Well..."
Evelyn turned her head, looking toward Leo, who was now smoking. Right beside him stood Ezra, and Simon didn’t have to guess what was going on between the two.
(That’s... Interesting? Never took him for a smoker.)
Whatever he thought, he simply could not endure this "party" any longer. Every moment he spent here was like a torturous hour in hell. Without another word, he stood up and began to walk away.
"Si, where are you going?"
"To get some fresh air."
"Ohhhh. Make sure to come back!"
Simon turned towards her, slightly confused. It was clear he wasn’t going to come back, which made him chuckle. This might’ve been his first genuine laugh since joining the bureau.
"I’m not. You can follow if you’d like, though."
