The Country Maiden: Fields and Leisure-Chapter 100 What is He Here For?
Chapter 100: Chapter 100 What is He Here For?
Old Granny Zhang achieved her goal and didn’t dally; she went back to her room to pack up.
Lady Jiang also made an excuse to pack up some food to take to Wang Laozhu and headed to the kitchen.
Jindou and Jinhoo brothers finally felt a bit of confidence, knowing their mother was willing to spend silver. Even if Doctor Ma didn’t succeed, they could find another doctor. As long as they didn’t give up, there would be a way to cure him.
With this thought, the complexions of the two brothers improved considerably. They exchanged a glance and went back into the room to pack a few more clothes for their parents.
Left behind were Wang Yongzhu and a few Little Beans with big eyes staring at small eyes.
It was only now that Wang Yongzhu realized what Old Granny Zhang’s previous seamless and textbook display of wailing and complaints had aimed for.
By the time she figured it out, Old Granny Zhang’s goal had already been accomplished, and in the end, the decisive use of money had filled the Jindou and Jinhoo brothers with gratitude.
It seemed that if such tactics were employed a few more times, Jindou, Jinhoo, and Jinpan might all become another Wang Yongfu in the future.
Such tactics were clean and effective, without any concealment, and yet so effective!
Wang Yongzhu wanted to kneel in admiration!
Outside in the courtyard, Lady Jiang had packed the freshly baked pancakes and pickled vegetables and handed them to Jindou. She looked around to ensure no one was present and whispered some comforting advice, "Right now, the most important thing is for you brothers to stay strong and take good care of your father! At a time like this, your father needs someone by his side. With your father injured, it’s even more crucial for you brothers to unite and stand strong!"
Upon hearing this, Jindou and Jinhoo’s minds became clear.
Right! With their father injured and the pillar of the family fallen, now that they were grown up, they needed to stand firm and protect their parents and younger brother!
The two brothers looked at each other, their eyes filled with determination.
Overnight, Jindou had matured rapidly.
He didn’t forget to thank Lady Jiang, "Thank you, Aunt Jiang, for the reminder!"
In the past, their mother had brainwashed them, and added to that, Lady Jiang had virtually no presence or status in the Wang Family, so the brothers never really saw her as important.
They barely acknowledged her presence, let alone showed any respect.
Now, with Lady Jiang’s reminder, they felt gratitude in their hearts, and their attitude and tone became much more sincere.
Lady Jiang wanted to say more, but she caught sight of Old Granny Zhang coming out and quickly lowered her head and slipped into the kitchen.
Wang Yongzhu also came out, thinking that the Yellow Pine Mushrooms were almost ripe. She planned to head to town and stop by Shopkeeper Wu to ask if he would buy them. She needed to confirm and arrange the timing if he was interested.
Old Granny Zhang gave Lady Jiang a few more instructions, telling her to keep a close eye on the home, not let the children run around the village, and not to blab about everything; otherwise, there would be consequences upon return.
Lady Jiang bowed her head and agreed to each point.
The group was just about to depart when they pulled open the courtyard door and saw Song Chongjin standing outside with a solemn face and a hint of hesitation, his hand raised in midair as if he was just about to knock.
Wang Yongzhu’s eyelid twitched. What was he here for?
Old Granny Zhang, remembering how Song Chongjin had helped carry her eldest son down the mountain the day before, just grunted and turned her head away.
Jindou, feeling grateful for Song Chongjin’s help from yesterday and sensing the awkwardness, took the initiative to greet him, "Uncle Chongjin, are you looking for my fourth uncle? He didn’t come back last night, and we’re about to head to town. Is there a message I can pass on to him?"
Song Chongjin’s lips moved twice, his gaze swept over the group and settled on Wang Yongzhu.
Wang Yongzhu felt a bit of inexplicable cleverness. Why had Song Chongjin rushed over to her house so early in the morning and was now looking at her intently? What was he trying to do?
Seeing that Song Chongjin wanted to speak but stopped short and was also blocking the doorway without speaking, Jinhu was anxious. He still had to hurry dozens of miles to town. Who was to blame for this delay?
"Uncle Chongjin, if you have something to say, just say it. We’re in a rush to go to town to see my father. We really can’t afford any delay—"
A look of discomfort flashed across Song Chongjin’s face, his eyebrows furrowed a few times before he clenched his teeth and said, "Miss Wang, may I have a word with you in private?"
"What? Me?" Wang Yongzhu pointed at herself in surprise.
Song Chongjin nodded.
Old Granny Zhang stepped forward protectively, positioning Wang Yongzhu behind her: "What do you want, Song Family boy? I’m telling you, our Zhuzhu and you have already broken off the engagement, and it’s too late for regrets now! My girl must have been blinded to have liked you before. Now she doesn’t like you anymore, so don’t keep bothering her! If you ruin my girl’s reputation, I swear I’ll fight you to the death!"
Song Chongjin actually explained for once, "I need to talk to Miss Wang about something very important."
Old Granny Zhang eyed him doubtfully, "What could be so important between a young man like you and my daughter? If there’s something important, tell me!"
She did not want her daughter to have any more contact with Song Chongjin, fearing that her girl might once again be blinded by his good looks. What to do then?
Wang Yongzhu saw the gravity in Song Chongjin’s eyes and figured that, given his character, he wouldn’t come looking for her avoiding all suspicions unless it was truly an emergency.
After thinking for a moment, she tugged on Old Granny Zhang’s sleeve and whispered, "It’s alright, mother. I’ll just talk to him aside for a minute to see what’s the matter."
Old Granny Zhang was still worried: "My girl, if you’re going to talk to him, that’s fine, but keep your eyes shut, okay? Don’t look at that boy! Remember, a good horse doesn’t eat the grass behind it, you hear me?"
Wang Yongzhu couldn’t help but laugh and cry, "Mother, what are you thinking? I said I don’t like him and I mean it! Besides, we’re just going to talk beside here, and you can see us the whole time. If there’s any fuss, you’re watching! If anything untoward happens, just cough to remind me."
Having said all that, Old Granny Zhang finally stepped aside reluctantly.
Wang Yongzhu walked about a dozen steps to the side, estimating that Old Granny Zhang and the Jindou brothers probably couldn’t hear them now, and that’s when she stopped.
Without giving Song Chongjin another glance, she slightly lowered her head, "What is it? Just say it!"
Song Chongjin hesitated for a moment, then stepped forward, leaning in close to Wang Yongzhu and quickly whispered, "Yesterday, when I was helping Brother Yongfu down the mountain, I noticed something was off. Brother Yongfu’s injury might have been deliberately inflicted by someone!"
"What?"
"What are you trying to do, Song Family boy—"
A cry of alarm and a shout of rebuke rose at the same time.
The alarm was from Wang Yongzhu, who quickly grasped the meaning behind Song Chongjin’s words—it meant her elder brother’s injury wasn’t an accident; it was intentional!
Who would do such a thing? Why would anyone harm such a gentle person like her brother?
The shout came from Old Granny Zhang.
She had been watching her daughter and the Song Family boy intently as they walked aside without blinking. Her girl was behaving properly, keeping her head down without looking around, which satisfied her greatly.
But what was that Song Family boy doing, stepping forward so close to her daughter? And leaning his head in—was he trying to take advantage of her girl right in front of her eyes?
Even though Song Chongjin quickly stepped back after he finished speaking, Old Granny Zhang was still so angry that she felt like grabbing a broom and giving him a piece of her mind.
