The Chef Rules the Last Days-Chapter 489 - 487: Scramble
Chapter 489: Chapter 487: Scramble
Indeed, who should it be given to?
This question was clearly intentional, and it almost caused the people present to fight each other.
Faced with these starving yet unwilling to change individuals, Lu Chen felt no sympathy at all, as could be inferred from the fleeting sneer on his face that Su Mo noticed.
"With them like this, there’s really no choice, it’s either starve to death or be killed by zombies," Jin Han stood aside, watching the rowdy scene with disdain.
"Used to being fed and clothed," Lu Chen said indifferently, doing nothing to stop the chaos unfolding before him.
The woman holding a child on the side couldn’t help but start worrying about her husband. She walked forward a few steps and shouted loudly, "Enough! Stop fighting! When the leader was here, you all just eagerly waited for him to bring back food! Now that he’s dead, even if you kill each other, no one will bring you food! Unite, or they might not give you any rations!"
This speech finally quieted them down a bit.
Su Mo couldn’t help but give the woman another look and ultimately sighed, "The food is for you, to be distributed evenly and there will be no problems."
The rice was readily given, but for water, among them, there was no Water Element Superpower user. The only one they had was injured and currently lying in the fenced courtyard.
Jianxiong first had them take the rice away to divide it up, and they would go to Da Qing at night for water.
Finally, when it quieted down, Su Mo quickly stored the rice dispensing machine into the Space, and the rice harvesting machine had been disassembled and utilized by the Gold Element Superpower User, refitted onto three battle vehicles.
Taking advantage of their ongoing repairs, Su Mo started wandering around; behind the vast warehouse, there indeed was a large backyard.
She looked through the window on the wall of the warehouse towards the yard. The window was nailed shut with wood, but through the cracks, she could vaguely see a well in the center of the yard, covered with a huge rock.
Da Qing had said that this village had survived the hottest weather by relying on the well until the incident after the mutant rain, and he said no more.
The well had been contaminated.
That was easy to guess. She approached the window, squinted her eyes through the crack, and just then, the rock seemed to sense something and suddenly trembled.
She withdrew her gaze, knowing something was certainly trapped below.
A Spiritual Superpower User quietly appeared beside her and whispered, "There’s something in that well."
Su Mo nodded, "Pretend we don’t know."
She didn’t meddle in matters that should not concern her. Once they repaired the tires and reinforced a layer on the exterior of the battle vehicles, Lu Chen tested the strength and said, "It’s ready."
"It’s already evening now, let’s set off early tomorrow," Su Mo patted the hood of the engine, expressing satisfaction with the newly refurbished vehicle.
The transformation of scrap metal into various shapes on the battle vehicle astonished the woman holding the child; she watched in awe and said blankly, "Our previous leader could breathe fire. Is the outside world now filled with people like you?"
Su Mo turned to look at her, "A few are like us, but most are ordinary people."
"Defenseless like me?"
Su Mo sized her up and shook her head, "Though they are ordinary, having braved the outside world for so long, they can also kill monsters, unlike you who have been isolated here."
The woman thought for a long time, looked at her child in her arms, and asked with difficulty, "If I go out, can I survive?"
It was a question to which Su Mo couldn’t provide a definite answer, simply saying, "It’s tough, but at least there’s a slim chance of survival, staying here is just a matter of dying sooner or later."
She held her child and remained silent thereafter, her head bowed in contemplation.
The modified armored vehicle, Su Mo invited her to come up and sit.
The seats inside were spacious. The mother and son sat in a restrained manner, also very silent. To Su Mo, she seemed like someone who could see the situation clearly. ƒree𝑤ebnσvel-com
The vehicle returned all the way to Da Qing’s fenced yard. Many people had gathered around outside, but they dispersed when they saw their car approaching. Someone leaned against the car window and shouted towards the mother and son inside, "Your Da Qing has been beaten! And also your neighbor, Da Qiang!"
Su Mo frowned. After the vehicle stopped, she got out and followed. In the yard, a man covered in mud lay weakly on the ground, clutching fruitlessly at the last handful of rice, much of which had scattered on the ground.
In the neighboring yard, Da Qiang, likewise in pain, was struggling to get up from the ground.
"Their dad!" the woman hurriedly put down her child and ran over.
At the entrance, there stood a superpower user with an injured neck. Seeing Jin Han approaching, he spoke in a low voice to explain, "The villagers all came to steal the rice. When I woke up, it was like this."
Jin Han patted his shoulder, "It’s not your fault."
Da Qing had been beaten quite badly. When Su Mo approached, she found his hands had been kicked and broken. She couldn’t help but be somewhat sarcastic, "Such ignorant people."
Jianxiong carried the man inside, Lu Chen showed some kindness and found a few sticks to crudely secure Da Qing’s hand.
"We... have no rice left," he cried bitterly with one hand covering his face, and his wife and child also began crying miserably.
Jianxiong cleared his ears, not wanting to stay long, and followed Su Mo to prepare dinner in the kitchen.
"If you ask me, these people are really beastly," he said, stoking the fire and speaking to the woman busying herself over the stove.
Su Mo made some noodles, adding vegetables and meat with a layer of oil floating on top, letting out a delicious aroma as it boiled.
After tasting the noodles, she said, "There’s no hope left. Behind the repair shop, there indeed was something in the yard. Unless there’s an accident, that stone will break through in the next couple of days."
After dishing out the noodles, Su Mo called everyone to come and serve. Including Jin Han, people either sat or stood crammed in the dim room, slurping noodles. The most exaggerated were the three from Da Qing’s family; they were so moved they almost cried.
This was something they hadn’t tasted in over half a year.
Da Qing asked with a trembling voice, "Is there... is there still food outside?"
After swallowing her noodles, Su Mo nodded, "There is. It’s everyone for themselves now."
Da Qing fell silent again, drinking all the soup in the bowl before caressing his child’s head with a rough hand, his eyes dim.
After the meal, those people came again, saying that Su Mo and her group had promised to provide water, though these were not the same group who caused trouble and stole the rice.
Su Mo went inside to check on the three of them and then asked the superpower user with a cut on his neck to sit in the yard.
For the promised two boxes of water, those villagers indeed brought two large basins to fill.
Watching someone’s fingers magically produce a stream of water left them gaping.
As for the final distribution of these two buckets of water, that wasn’t Su Mo’s concern.
After dispersing the villagers, Su Mo went back inside to sleep.
That night, the gloomy Da Qiang entered the house. Da Qing sat by the table, and his young son, looking up, earnestly gazed at him, "Daddy, I want to eat meat noodles again."
