The Chef Rules the Last Days-Chapter 112 - 109: Monster?
Chapter 112: Chapter 109: Monster?
The wall in front of the desk was embedded with six screens, each divided into four smaller screens. The elevators’ surveillance cameras from every building were sending back feeds to this place, and not only that, there were...
She looked at them one by one. Apart from the elevator cameras, there were several that pointed at pitch-black hallways enclosed by large metal barriers, with two armed guards at each hallway.
She scanned the area and found the hallway that the man had mentioned was unguarded. She crouched down, lifted her hand, and placed it on the desk to pull up the black-and-white image on its own.
The camera was aimed directly at the iron door, a pale hand grabbed onto the railing, followed by a second, a third, until Su Mo could no longer keep count.
She had thought it was just a small range of quarantined zombies, until she saw countless legs extending from inside the metal barrier, appearing as if they were fused together with the hands.
Her heart began to pound rapidly, and her pupils dilated with disbelief.
What... kind of monster was this?
She minimized the screen and began to try to find clues related to the oil barrels in the remaining footage.
The scene she had just witnessed had a profound impact on her. She quickly navigated through the screens, coming to a halt in front of a room named 801—the only one that had granted access to its camera.
She reset the screens to their original layout and darted out the door.
After Su Mo returned to Lu Chen’s side, Li Qian also quickly wrapped up his conversation, but instead of approaching them, he was asked by one of the guards from the security room to escort him back to the residential building.
He glanced towards where they were, then followed the guards with a compliant smile on his face.
"Looks like it’s just us now," Li Chuan took a few steps forward and stopped in front of an out-of-breath Su Mo, bending slightly to ask her, "So, what did you see?"
"Monsters, monsters like I’ve never seen before," Su Mo said, ignoring him as she grabbed Lu Chen’s arm, her face serious. "I’ve never seen zombies like that."
A new species that appeared after a rain always refreshed her understanding.
Li Chuan’s smile stiffened momentarily, then straightened up and looked at her as he started sketching in the air with a finger, "The quality of the surveillance footage wasn’t very clear, but that thing was locked in the basement, its body covered with hands and feet."
"It’s the base of building 3, there should have been a Gatekeeper there, but he’s gone,"
She remembered the man she had knocked out saying that.
"And the oil?" Lu Chen patted her back, trying to help her relax a bit from her tense emotions.
"801," Su Mo replied. "I combed through all the surveillance, and only this room had a separate camera feed."
"Which building number? So we can go look for it," Jianxiong asked.
"Don’t know," Su Mo said, somewhat irritably shaking her head. "I only know it’s on the 8th floor, but there are a total of 12 buildings."
"Which one do you live in?" Lu Chen asked Li Chuan coldly.
With his hands tucked into his pockets, he replied, "6."
"We’re in 9," Su Mo said softly, looking into Lu Chen’s eyes as if understanding what he was thinking.
"6 and 9, they wouldn’t put the oil near us, would they, Lu Chen?"
"Let’s start looking," the man replied, clearly on the same wavelength as her.
Li Chuan caught on too, but Jianxiong was still in a haze, rubbing his head as he said roughly, "Sister, just tell us directly which buildings to look for, and I’ll go right now."
"If they are arranged in order, two buildings in a row make up 12...," Su Mo lowered her head, beginning to envision the rough layout of the complex in her mind.
"If we go by blind spots, actually, it’s only building 1 and 2," she said and looked up, at the building they were hiding in, which bore a large number two.
The security room is to the front right; building one is opposite.
Someone needs to keep a lookout below. Given Jianxiong’s scatterbrained nature, Su Mo isn’t comfortable with him going to building one, and neither is Lu Chen; after some contemplation, he set his sights on Li Chuan.
"You go to one," he said.
Li Chuan raised an eyebrow: "I can do that, but in exchange, I need you to store oil in your space."
"If there is any, you can use the Crystal Stones you’ve hunted to pay for it. You don’t have the right to object," Su Mo said bluntly, not about to let anyone take advantage of her man so easily.
All Li Chuan did was chuckle, the teardrop mole beneath his left eye making him appear even more enchanting: "Fine."
He agreed.
Su Mo immediately switched to a cute smile: "Then we have a deal. Here’s a tip for you: you can climb up the water pipe at the back of building one."
His smile grew even wider, and with a lazy step, he disappeared into the darkness.
"I’ll go up; you and Jianxiong stay here and keep watch," Lu Chen said, his eyes bright with pleasure as he ruffled her hair with his large hand. Once she agreed, he placed both hands on the wall and began to climb. ƒгeeweɓn૦vel.com
Su Mo looked up to see him climbing higher and higher, eventually becoming just a small, dark spot.
"Sis, how far have you and the boss gotten? Have you... " Jianxiong leaned close to her at that moment, nudging her shoulder lightly with his arm, his square face full of insinuation.
Su Mo rolled her eyes and leaned against the wall with a laugh: "Didn’t you eavesdrop at the hotel? What did you hear?"
"Nothing," Jianxiong replied, a bit frustrated: "How can the boss be so clueless?"
He was the one who deliberately put them together in one room.
Su Mo stood on tiptoe and slapped him vigorously on the shoulder, boldly proclaiming: "Don’t worry, I’ll sleep with him sooner or later."
"..." Jianxiong was momentarily lost for words, only managing to silently give her a thumbs-up.
In the distance, several flashes of light suddenly appeared, charging toward them with a din.
Su Mo’s heart tightened, and she immediately pulled Jianxiong by the arm to the wall: "Climb up!"
She looked up and saw that Lu Chen had already climbed inside the building.
Summoning the spikes in her palm, she placed her hand on the wall and climbed straight up like Spiderman.
Jianxiong hurried to follow. The beams of the flashlights didn’t head their way but went straight for building one.
After reaching the eighth floor, Lu Chen gently pushed open the small window of the bathroom stall and climbed inside.
The room was pitch-dark. He walked out of the bathroom; the decor here was not much different from where they were staying, except there was no furniture, only rows of shelves filled with gasoline collected from outside. There was also a huge metal drum by the door, and one could guess what was inside.
A commotion arose from outside the door, and with his eyes darkening, Lu Chen immediately went back into the bathroom and climbed down.
As soon as he emerged, someone else entered the room.
It wasn’t long before he reappeared within their view and quickly climbed down.
"Looks like someone got discovered," Su Mo said with a smile, observing the commotion at building one.
"Boss, is there oil upstairs?" Jianxiong asked eagerly, hanging on the wall.
Su Mo turned to look at him as well, and under their gaze, the man slowly nodded and said softly, "There is, but we can’t take it tonight."
