The CEO's Wife Is a Medical Master-Chapter 15: Picked Up on the Road
Cara Preston’s expression was a mixture of emotions. She had expected that tipping off the Kane family to come and cause a scene would destroy Vera Xavier’s reputation and that Rona Langdon would successfully marry Vera off into their family. She never imagined that Vera actually had a compromising photo of Wesley Kane.
She gazed intently at Vera Xavier. Vera stood there quietly, a wall of blooming roses behind her, looking as beautiful as a painting.
She suddenly regretted what she had said to Rona Langdon last night. She had a nagging feeling that the Vera Xavier before her was different from the girl she used to be—no longer someone she could so easily manipulate.
As if sensing her gaze, Vera Xavier turned her bright, lively eyes toward her. The corners of Vera’s mouth lifted into a faint smile. "Sister, it’s a good thing you didn’t marry Wesley Kane. I never would have thought he was such a scumbag!"
Vera Xavier sighed but said nothing more.
Cara Preston asked tentatively, "Sister, where did you get that photo of Wesley Kane?"
"I found it on the street," Vera Xavier replied.
Of course, you don’t just find a photo like that on the street. Nathaniel Nathan had given it to her.
After they had registered their marriage yesterday, Nathaniel Nathan gave her the photo. His intention was for her to see Wesley Kane’s true colors, give up on him completely, and settle down as his dutiful wife.
Little did he know, she had already seen Wesley Kane’s true nature in her previous life. She had been mulling over the best way to handle the situation, considering several plans, but none were as simple, direct, and powerful as using that photo.
Cara Preston asked curiously, "Which street?"
Vera Xavier sighed. "I found it on the street right in front of our house. Someone probably took pity on me. They must have thought Wesley Kane was such a scumbag that they wanted to give me a warning!"
After she said that, Cara Preston was still skeptical but couldn’t press the matter any further.
Zachary Preston said worriedly, "You gave the photo to the Kane family today, and they’ve already torn it up. This might cause more trouble for you later."
Vera Xavier glanced at Zachary Preston. Understanding her unspoken request, Zachary turned to Cara Preston and said, "Go help your mother in the kitchen."
Cara Preston agreed and went into the kitchen.
Zachary was sending them away so he could speak to her in private, away from Cara Preston and Rona Langdon. A warmth spread through Vera’s heart.
’Zachary must have figured out what’s on my mind. He tried to warn me in my past life, too, but I completely missed the point back then. I didn’t take it to heart, and I missed out on his help, which is how I ended up with that viper Cara Preston constantly by my side.’
The moment Cara Preston was gone, a cunning glint flashed in Vera Xavier’s eyes. She leaned in close to Zachary Preston and said, "Don’t worry. I have a few more."
She then pulled two more photos from her pocket. Zachary Preston stared, stunned. Vera whispered, "If the Kane family refuses to let this go and comes looking for trouble again, we’ll just make a hundred copies of these and plaster them all over the city. Let’s see if they still dare to bother us then!"
Zachary Preston was a bit shocked to hear such words from his usually meek and honest daughter. But as he looked at her delicate yet determined face, he felt a pang of guilt. ’If it weren’t for my poor judgment of character, she never would have been wronged like this.’
’The only reason Vera would do something like this,’ he thought, ’is because she’s been pushed into a corner. Otherwise, why would she ever come up with such a plan?’
He said softly, "Alright. You hold onto these photos for now. We’ll play it by ear."
He finished and handed her five hundred yuan. "You’re a grown woman now. Go buy yourself some nice clothes. As for your mother, just ignore her. I’ve got your back."
