The Celibate Tycoon Has Fallen-Chapter 61: Don’t Cry, This Isn’t Despair
The men left.
In the crowded living room, Madeline Forest sat down heavily on the floor, her face streaked with tears.
"Ah—" She held her head and banged her forehead heavily against the hard floor.
Yelena Hughes was distraught, but most of her spirit had returned.
She squatted down, forcibly lifted Madeline’s face, cradling it in her hands, "Madeline, don’t cry, look at me."
Madeline’s eyes were swollen from crying, "I didn’t owe any money, I didn’t, Yelena, don’t agree to them..."
"Madeline, do you blame me?"
Madeline’s sobs caught in her throat, tears falling like a broken string of pearls. "How could I blame you, it’s me who dragged you into this. Don’t agree to them, you worked so hard to get out."
"Are you silly? Even if it wasn’t that vase, there would be something else. You’re the innocent one, dragged down by me."
Madeline shook her head, her left cheek swollen like a bun, struggling to speak, "No, you could just turn away, Yelena, please don’t..."
Yeah, if she were cold-blooded enough, she wouldn’t care about Madeline’s fate and would still be guilt-free.
Yelena wiped her tears with her fingers, "Don’t be so pessimistic, don’t cry."
"But it’s a million..."
"Yeah, a million, a lot, a whole lot." Yelena stood up, wrapped some ice in a towel to reduce Madeline’s swelling, "The Sovereign Club has plenty of lavish guests, no big deal."
How could she say it’s no big deal?
Madeline felt like the world was collapsing, "Yelena."
Yelena was frighteningly calm, "You know, I’ve been through my sister being left in the hospital, no one willing to treat her. Experienced all kinds of humiliation, our mother and us were pressed before a grave, forced to kneel for a stranger because my dad wrote an article that offended wealthy people."
"Late at night, couldn’t find a taxi at the cemetery, my sister got so scared she had a heart attack. My mom and I carried her, step by step, to the hospital."
"So, Madeline, going back to The Sovereign Club, what does it matter? There’s food, there’s drink, still alive, I’m not at a dead end."
Madeline looked stunned.
She didn’t know how Yelena survived all this, walking barefoot over a field of thorns yet living so vividly, beautifully, without any filth.
How did she do it?
She must have hidden her bloodied side, right?
On the way back, Yelena slightly tilted her head, moonlight clear, with pain and tears in her eyes, but no light.
The next day, when Chester saw Yelena at The Sovereign Club, she jumped in shock, "What happened?"
Yelena didn’t hide anything and told her everything.
Chester took a deep drag from her cigarette and cursed several times, "That Thorne guy really won’t let it go."
The cigarette was bright with lipstick, Chester took another deep puff, "Looking for Jasper?"
"What about Madeline? Thorne’s family is complicated, I checked. Even if Jasper could help me, he definitely wouldn’t tear his face over Madeline with Shawn Thorne."
Chester spat, "The Thorne guy is counting on that, these rich people are really disgusting."
"They even said, even if I meet Jasper, I can’t let him know I’m being forced. Second time at the club because I love money, because I willingly degrade myself."
Chester angrily stubbed out her cigarette, "Damn it, a million is no small amount."
"Yeah."
"Wait here for me, I’ll be right back."
Yelena changed her clothes, ready to leave, when Chester came in again.
She took Yelena’s hand, put a watch in it, "Take it, go to a second-hand shop, it can fetch quite a lot."
Yelena glanced at it, recognized it, "Isn’t this the one I gave you the other day?"
"Yes, took it off Thorne’s hand, not cheap. Yelena, this watch can fill most of the million-dollar hole, take it quickly."
Yelena hurried to return it, "No, this was given to you."
"Don’t be foolish, I couldn’t help that night, don’t make me feel worse, hurry!"
Chester forced the watch into Yelena’s pocket, "Don’t be dumb again, money is dirty, but it gets things done. Take care, sweetie."
Yelena’s nose felt a sting of bitterness, "Thank you, Chester."
Just then, outside the break room, a woman ready to come in and grab something overheard the final exchanges. She tip-toed away.
Chester arranged for Yelena to have a private room, the guests all brought companions, so no one dared lay hands on her.
A guest ordered more drinks, she picked up the order list to fetch them.
Just as she stepped into the hallway, two other girls passed by, seeming to whisper about something, "Big trouble, a guest lost something."
"Oh? Was it valuable?"
"Not sure."
Yelena had barely taken a few more steps when a rush of footsteps surrounded her. Soon, she was completely encircled.
Looking up, she saw Shawn Thorne’s face, immediately becoming wary.
"I lost a watch, heard you took it."
Yelena felt as if someone had hit her over the head with a club, Shawn stared at her menacingly, like a snake.
"Your Sovereign Club girls, with sticky fingers." He approached, gripping Yelena’s arm, dragging her to a spacious resting area.
More and more people gathered, guests as well as club girls.
Yelena looked around at all the eyes, filled with schadenfreude, eager to see a show, as if ready to strip her bare.
"Who told Master Thorne? I didn’t take your watch."
Shawn’s gaze dropped immediately to Yelena’s shorts pocket. "If I find it on you today, then what?"
The crowd squeezed tighter, while some in the throng voluntarily moved aside.
Jasper Yale stood tall, a conspicuous coolness amidst the multitude.
Yelena surmised something, maintained composure, "I didn’t steal anything from Master Thorne. Not long ago, you rewarded me with a watch, claimed it was a gift. Seems now you’re unwilling to part with it, right?"
"Ha," Shawn chuckled slyly, "Who are you? Would I really give you a watch?"
Yelena stepped back, catching sight of a familiar silhouette out of the corner of her eye.
She looked toward Jasper’s direction, where he stood aloof and noble, unmistakably out of place with this indulgent scene.
Jasper’s gaze was cold, indifferent, scanning Yelena from head to toe, the corners of his eyes full of mockery.
Yelena felt stung by his eyes.
But now wasn’t the time for humiliation, she knew that if Shawn found the watch on her, she’d be done for.
Yelena walked swiftly toward Jasper, her high heels wobbling, nearly stumbling.
Reaching Jasper, she knew Shawn wouldn’t dare step closer to Jasper.
Yelena’s gaze held a plea as she quietly slipped her hand into her pocket, trying to place the watch on Jasper.
But as her hand went out, her wrist was caught by Jasper.
He even raised her arm high, his voice icy and sharp, "Is this the watch Master Thorne mentioned?"
