Chapter 18: Chapter 18: Don’t Trust a Man’s Words Too Much

Yelena Hughes cursed Jasper Yale viciously in her heart.

Doesn’t he have a girlfriend? Doesn’t he think it’s inappropriate to say such things?

Yelena Hughes didn’t even know how to respond, "My chest isn’t nice to look at."

She waited a long time for Jasper’s reply, attempting to send an emoji, but it showed as not sent.

Looking closely, Yelena found out that Jasper had blocked her.

He was bored during a meeting, looking for some amusement. Now that the meeting was over, he had no time to play with her.

But Yelena still needed to publish her report, regardless of whether Jasper would help her or not. Someone had to expose the evil deeds Felix Wood had done.

The next day, the forced demolition in Bracken Village was exposed.

Dean Holloway sat nervously in front of the computer, "The hot search climbed up, what should we do next?"

"Create more topics and boost the retweet and discussion numbers." Yelena Hughes listened to the edited recording, with Jasper’s voice removed, leaving only Felix Wood admitting to tampering.

Dean Holloway had collaborated with several marketing accounts, getting people to stir things up wasn’t an issue.

At the end of work, Dean offered to give her a ride, "Shall we have dinner together?"

"Aren’t you going to the hospital to change your dressing? Don’t worry about me, I need to go to the mall."

"What for?"

Yelena picked up her bag from the table, "To buy my sister a couple of outfits."

Anne Hughes’s health had been recovering well during her medication period, and Yelena wanted to take her out for a walk this weekend.

Young girls all like pretty clothes. Before, she never had the chance to wear them outside, but now things were different.

Yelena wandered around the mall for a while but hadn’t found any suitable clothes when she realized she seemed to be followed.

She was a journalist, particularly sensitive to such things.

Yelena changed to another store and found the young man still following her.

The mall, with its crowds, was also the safest place, but she couldn’t guarantee no accidents would happen later.

Trying to shake him off, Yelena took the elevator up floor by floor. Arriving on the fourth floor, which should’ve been bustling, she found it empty.

It was too late for Yelena to go down; the man had already caught up.

She had no choice but to keep walking forward, and seeing no one around, the man quickened his steps.

He approached her from behind, speaking in a low voice, "Stop!"

Yelena finally saw someone, a tall figure standing by the glass railing. She jogged a few steps forward.

"Hello—"

The person turned their face to Yelena, and she stopped mid-sentence. Glancing back, she saw the man following her had stopped but hadn’t left, leaning on the side railing.

Seeing Jasper Yale about to leave, Yelena called out, "Young Master Yale, what a coincidence."

She raised her voice, her face full of smiles, "Are you here to eat?"

Jasper displayed a slightly cold half-smile, "What’s it to you?"

Feeling slightly disgruntled, Yelena spoke in a voice only the two of them could hear.

"Please help me out, I’m being followed."

Jasper grabbed her arm, pulling her closer, "What did you say?"

Almost bumping into him, she pointed back, "He’s been tailing me the whole way."

"Taken a fancy to you, perhaps?"

Yelena was almost panicking, "He could be one of Felix Wood’s people."

Jasper glanced at the man and said nothing, having other matters to attend to. Seeing Jasper heading to the restaurant entrance, Yelena quickly followed.

She stayed very close to him, afraid that man would rush over and take her away.

"Young Master Yale, this matter has blown up now, and the social impact is significant. The police will surely reinvestigate it. But before then, I don’t want to die."

Hailey Jenkins was waiting at the dining place. Seeing Jasper approach, she pushed the door open.

Jasper walked in, and Yelena didn’t dare follow, just standing there.

The man in the distance occasionally glanced over. Hailey, pulling the door shut again, looked at Yelena.

"Miss Hughes, do you know this person?"

"No, he followed me the whole way."

Hailey took out her phone, "Do you need help calling the police?"

"He’s just stalking me now, even if I call the police it won’t help. What’s more, solving today doesn’t address tomorrow..."

Hailey thought about it and agreed.

"Young Master can’t be left alone; I’ll have to excuse myself."

Yelena watched wide-eyed as Hailey went inside, not even giving her a chance to follow, with the door shutting right in front of her.

The man looked around, then slowly started walking over.

Yelena felt cornered, with nowhere to retreat. She might as well stay here, at least there were people inside the restaurant who could hear her call for help.

The man quickly stepped in front of her, forcibly grabbing Yelena’s wrist.

She clung tightly to the doorknob behind her, "Don’t be reckless, there are people everywhere and surveillance too."

"If you know what’s good for you, you’ll come with me."

Yelena watched him pull a knife from his pocket, the sharp blade ready to press against her waist.

"Don’t scream. Since I could find you, I can find out who else you have at home."

Yelena’s breathing tightened, and just then, the door beside her clicked open.

Jasper saw the two of them tugging at each other, also noticing the knife, "What are you standing there for? Didn’t I tell you to come in?"

Yelena turned to look at him, the gloom in her eyes completely lifted.

"Young Master, I ran into an acquaintance, just wanted to exchange a couple of words with him."

Jasper’s eyes flashed sharply at the man, "An acquaintance, do you need to hug and pull at each other like this?"

Yelena was indeed quite scared, fearing the man would stab her outright. She fiercely broke free from his grasp, "Do I need to introduce you? This is Young Master Yale."

The man put away his knife, saying nothing as he left.

Yelena felt like a tightly drawn string suddenly releasing tension. She knew the man wouldn’t go far.

Jasper, talking to himself, said, "Seems Felix Wood wasn’t too stupid, finding out about you this quickly."

Yelena’s face turned a shade paler, "It’s only a matter of time, but he won’t be free for long."

"True, the police just issued a notice saying they’d thoroughly investigate, Miss Hughes, you’re really kind. The surviving mother will be grateful to you." Jasper’s tone shifted, "Just not sure how you’re planning to protect yourself?"

Yelena rubbed her wrist, which was red from the grip.

She raised her head to look at Jasper, "We’ve already discussed this, Young Master said you’d take care of it."

"When did I say that?"

"You did say it."

Is she trying to play tricks on him?

Jasper walked further inside, Yelena closely tailing him, "It’s because Young Master has my back that I dared to publish. I trust you that much."

Jasper scoffed coldly, "If something really happens to you, you’ll still blame me?"

"Please keep your promise."

Jasper turned his head to look at her, "Don’t trust what men say too much, especially things said in bed."
