The Celibate Tycoon Has Fallen-Chapter 156: The Best Warmth Is Holding Her in My Arms
The car was about to start.
Yelena Hughes desperately hoped this day would pass quickly. If she could hide, she would rather knock herself out.
Or just sleep, and everything would be over.
But she couldn’t.
Relatives were advising Lindsay Walsh, "You have to hold on for the sake of the two children, even if your body can’t take it."
The wheels slowly started moving, and tears from Yelena Hughes fell drop by drop onto the glass photo frame. She couldn’t bear to let go, so she wiped it clean with her sleeve.
It had been raining all day in Southcross City and hadn’t stopped by evening.
All the relatives had left, and there was a photo on the long table at home.
Lindsay Walsh had collapsed, lying in bed without eating or drinking.
Anne Hughes couldn’t hold on either, developing a fever after taking medicine, feeling groggy.
Yelena Hughes was busy going back and forth between the two rooms, knowing that anyone could fall, but she couldn’t.
She had to hold on to the last breath.
Since that day, Yelena Hughes hadn’t seen Jasper Yale again. The fact that he personally helped protect the coffin was already remarkable.
Even if Jasper Yale felt sorry for her, he had to maintain a sense of propriety and couldn’t lose control over a woman.
On the seventh day, Hailey Jenkins came.
He stood downstairs with his team just as Yelena Hughes finished burning joss paper and saw them.
She quickly walked over, "Hailey."
"Miss Hughes."
"Why are you here?"
Hailey glanced around, "To keep an eye out for anyone causing trouble."
Upon hearing this, Yelena felt a faint warmth in her heart, looking at the nearby car, unsure if anyone was inside.
She thought of going back upstairs but said, "Thank you."
"You don’t have to thank me."
Yelena lightly clenched her hand, "Where is he?"
"Young Master Yale has been busy with the new medication and can’t make it."
She responded, lowering her eyes, not realizing she was filled with disappointment.
"Miss Hughes, come with me for a moment, there’s something on the car for you."
"What is it?"
Hailey led Yelena to the car without speaking, opened the backseat door, and she looked inside to find a figure sitting there.
Yelena was a bit surprised, "You—"
Weren’t you unable to leave?
Jasper Yale extended his hand to her, gesturing for her to sit in, and Yelena bent over, just managed to sit down, when Jasper pulled her close.
Hailey closed the car door, and the warm air flowed through the cramped space, making Yelena feel a bit hot all of a sudden.
Jasper’s gaze swept over her face, noticing she looked terribly worn out; her eyes were still swollen, indicating she must have cried a lot in recent days.
"I don’t know how to comfort you."
"No need to comfort me."
This hurdle, Yelena could get through by herself.
"In the first month of my dad’s disappearance, I cried all the tears I could. I’ve prepared for the worst, so... accepting this result isn’t so hard."
It was just that her mother and sister back home were completely devastated.
Jasper nodded; it was best that she thought this way.
Yelena made an effort to appear spirited, "I still need to go back and cook, Young Master Yale, I’ll leave first."
As she reached for the car door, despite feeling awful, she still took on all the responsibilities of the household.
He pulled her back, holding her close against his body.
"Let me hold you."
This embrace, to her, was like a weary person suddenly finding support. Yelena turned her head slightly, pressing her face against Jasper’s.
Yet she knew deep down that this warmth wasn’t hers to keep, aware that this man wasn’t hers.
"I really must go."
Jasper’s arm loosened, and Yelena got out of the car.
She remembered all the warmth offered to her during this time, but the road ahead was rugged, and no one could carry her through each step.
Half a month later.
The weather was still gloomy and cold. After finishing an interview, Yelena parted ways with Dean Holloway.
She hadn’t ridden her bike today and was passing through a residential area when she heard a loud crash.
It sounded like something being knocked over, accompanied by a woman’s painful scream.
Following the sound for a few steps, Yelena saw a pile of bamboo poles scattered on the ground.
In a corner, a familiar person was curled up, and in front of her stood someone wielding a knife.
Walsh was holding her abdomen; hearing footsteps, she looked up with a self-mocking grin.
This fate was relentless with her tonight.
Yelena saw the woman facing her, raising her arm to stab again at Walsh.
"Stop!"
The woman turned her head and recognized Yelena, "Oh, it’s you again, sister."
Yelena saw the face under the dim lights, realizing it was Young Master Yale’s new flame.
"What are you doing?"
The woman immediately put on a pitiful facade.
"Sister, she ruined me terribly. She’s destroyed my whole life."
Walsh held her stomach tightly, blood seeping through her fingers.
Leaning against the wall without speaking, she smirked disdainfully, wondering if she could expect Yelena to save her. This was indeed a ruthless person.
"Sister, please pretend you didn’t see anything. She hurt me so badly, I just want to teach her a lesson."
But this was more than a lesson; it was an attempt on her life.
Yet Yelena nodded, "I really haven’t seen anything."
Walsh’s vision swam with pain, women like these, each one was harsher than the last, "Back then... you slept with Young Master Yale... I was merely the go-between, why hold a grudge against me?"
The woman relaxed upon hearing this, "Look at how many people you’ve harmed, you deserve this!"
Just as she finished, she felt a shooting pain in her wrist, and the knife clattered to the ground.
The woman reacted and reached to retrieve it, but Yelena used a bamboo pole to knock it away.
The woman, furious and almost hysterical, cried, "You—"
Yelena stood beside Walsh, her words a warning, "I called the police when I got here, they’ll be here soon."
The woman, paling from fear, said nothing and ran off.
Walsh struggled to get up, "Don’t run, you little brat!"
Dropping the bamboo, Yelena pinned her down, "Where do you think she can run to? Just look at how much blood you’ve lost."
Walsh, for the first time, was reprimanded by a young woman with an admonishing tone. She opened her mouth but didn’t speak.
Yelena called an ambulance and accompanied her to the hospital.
Walsh was seriously injured, and before being wheeled in for surgery, she grabbed Yelena’s hand. "Since you got involved, you have to see it through. Call Young Master Yale, tell him to come."
Yelena wasn’t clear about the relationship between Walsh and Jasper, but she called nonetheless.
By the time Jasper rushed back from out of town, Yelena hadn’t left yet.
