The Broken Halo-Chapter 60: The First Trial (1)
Simon completely ignored the shouts of the demon kids outside the door. He could hear the curses and threats they threw at him after a minute passed, but he didn’t care.
The moment he saw their demeanors, clothes, and lineup, he knew that the chances of anything good happening if he answered them was abysmal.
He had experienced such a thing before where he was called by humans who believed the world was theirs.
Their arrogance knew no bounds, and in cultivation novels he had read, they were referred to as the arrogant young masters.
And the only way to escape such individuals and not anger them is to cower and suck up to them.
Simon would definitely never do such a thing, and since he had experienced the annoyance of such arrogant young masters, he did the best thing possible.
Ignore them.
Sure, it would make them to be angry at him. But even if he responded to their call, he would still anger them because of his innate arrogance, and his disdain and anger toward demons.
Since no matter what he did, he would most likely anger them, it was better not to waste his time speaking to such fools.
He would rather use it to rest or cultivate his chaos flame.
And that was what he did.
’They’re most likely nobles. I can sense their Noble Bloodlines. But all except one is trash. At least the rules and guards of the clan are very useful in this situation.’
Because of the presence of the Shadowgrave Guards in front of his house, the noble kids could not barge into his house and disturb him.
He was not the only one that had guards in front of his house. Every trial member had guards in front of their houses, and the guards were there to maintain peace and order.
Some trial members got into a fight on the first day he arrived here, and he saw the guards discipline and punish both trial members.
After that day, he and several other trial members realized that fighting was disallowed in the Blackwind Valley.
The guards did nothing but sit in front of their houses in meditative poses, and they said no words.
Some complained about them, but Simon had no issues with them.
They didn’t disturb him. He won’t disturb them.
’Fifteen percent. Let’s see if I can do fifteen percent before the trial tomorrow.’
Simon closed his eyes and began cultivating.
BANG!
BANG!
BOOM!
BANG!
BANG!
BOOM!
Hours later, extremely loud drumbeats shook the entire valley, causing every trial member who was either sleeping or in deep meditation to awaken.
Many complained, while those like Simon calmly opened their eyes but remained alert.
The drum sounds continued, and Simon rubbed his eyes as he stood. He yawned a little, then he walked out of his house with a sharp gaze.
’Sleeping sure is nice. Wish I did that more often when I was the Hero of Earth.’
As Simon pushed the door open and walked out, he was stunned to see so many people standing in rows and columns a few meters from his home.
Everybody was facing the narrow stone bridges, and Simon tilted his head slightly and looked at the narrow stone bridges.
There, he saw five clan members wearing masks with veils attached to the bottom of the masks.
Simons ears twitched when he heard the whispers of surprise from the demons around him, then his eyes narrowed slightly with interest.
’So, clan members with these type of masks are called Veilmasters huh. And two Veilmasters are usually in charge of the trial, but this time around, there are five Veilmasters.’
’Seems something interesting might happen in this trial.’
Clap!
The Veilmaster who stood in the middle and at the forefront of the other Veilmasters clapped, and the entire valley went silent.
The whispers, the drumbeats, and the sound of the winds of the valley all went silent for a moment the instant the Veilmaster clapped. 𝒇𝒓𝒆𝒆𝙬𝒆𝒃𝓷𝒐𝓿𝙚𝙡.𝒄𝓸𝒎
’Such fine control over their demonic energy.’ Simon praised with a slight nod of his head, then the Veilmaster spoke.
To Simon’s surprise, it was a woman.
"Welcome to Blackwind Valley, the land where many of you would die in the hopes of achieving something great."
The kids murmured, and the Veilmaster clapped once again.
Clap!
"You don’t speak when I have not given you permission. If you do, you’ve failed this trial."
Everybody instantly went silent, and the Veilmaster nodded.
"Good."
She continued.
"Now, you guys are mere mongrels. We’ll be referring to you guys as mongrels until you not only pass this trial but successfully become a true Initiate of the Clan."
Simon raised a brow at the words of the Veilmaster, and just as he expected, some noble kids complained.
"What the fuck?!"
"Who do you think are?!"
"Bitch!"
"Suck my skinny ass cock!"
"You don’t even know your place, mongrel!"
Ten of the trial members shouted and cursed the Veilmaster, and Simon and some othe trial members shook their heads.
The Veilmaster calmly waited with her arms folded, and when everywhere was silent again, she pointed indifferently at the ten trial members that spoke.
"You, you, you, you,... and you. You’ve failed. Get out."
"What?! Are you insane?!"
"How-"
"Say another word and you die."
The Veilmaster cut them coldly, and the valley became utterly silent once again.
The ten noble kids trembled, and although they all had their grievances, they kept shut and walked out of the valley with heads hung low in shame and anger.
After they left, the Veilmaster scoffed, then she continued addressing Simon and the rest.
"And this is why I call you guys mongrels."
She sighed, then she continued.
She snapped her fingers, and a dark marble appeared in her right hand.
Simon’s eyes narrowed. ’What’s that? Shadows?’
He looked around, and he saw that the eyes of some demons shone brightly in anticipation and excitement.
"I’m sure some of you know what this is... condensed shadow essence."
