Chapter 250: Don’t need your help

"You better worry about yourself. No need to care about Nick." Emily was quick to defend her eldest brother as she came to stand next to Mark who was still eating chips. She grabbed the packet from his hands only to find barely a few broken pieces left.

"Want a new one?" He asked with raised eyebrows while shaking a brand new packet in front of her face.

She pushed the packet away while glaring at him. She really didn’t want him to do something stupid just to change Domenic’s virgin status.

"I heard that you are out searching for partners for him. Why not let me help you? Maybe he will fall in love after a night together with his partner." Mark offered only to receive a punch from Simon who had been listening to their conversation silently.

"What?" Mark seemed totally lost as he stared at his brother with a questioning look.

"You better stay away from this matter. Your plan will only lend us in trouble and I’m not looking forward to dealing with an angry Domenic." Simon spat back in a hushed tone as he snatched the packet of chips from Mark and returned to his seat.

"How dare he look down on me? My plan can’t be that bad." Mark sounded like he was complaining but Emily knew better. This brother of hers had a very high ego that could be damaged very easily.

"Just forget about this idea of hooking up Nick with some random girl. That’s all we want from you." She tried to phrase Simon’s words in a more direct but sophisticated way.

"Whatever!" Mark muttered as he gave her his signature nose scrunch before moving away to return to his seat.

Her eyes found their way towards Shadow who had been silently sitting in one of the corners of the porch, far away from where the rest of them were sitting.

From where she was sitting, it seemed like he was fast asleep but she knew better than to believe that. He couldn’t fall asleep with people present around him, even when he’s badly tired.

She asked one of the servants to hand her a blanket before she went to drape the same blanket over the man who appeared quite tired after his return from Night City.

"What’s up with him?" Crist asked when she returned to sit beside him on the couch.

"Nothing much. He’s just tired these days and needs some rest. He will ne back to normal once he got a full rest." She answered and her brother nodded his head in understanding.

It was quite a pleasant feeling to see her brothers caring about Shadow. They had really come to accept him as a family.

The rest of the dinner went peacefully with normal talk and teasing every now and then. By the time they ended the dinner, it was already past nine o’clock and Emily immediately retired to her room as she had a busy schedule for the next day.

"Master Daniel, here’s the file that you wanted." Secretary Wang entered the office and handed the file to the president of the company.

Daniel slowly nodded his head as he took the file and started going through the data that he had been searching for.

After a few seconds, he decided to dismiss his secretary. Not being able to concentrate on his work, he decided to take a break. Closing the file, he put it inside of the drawers when his eyes landed on a familiar card, and memories of two beautiful people entered his brain.

A groan left his lips as he realized exactly how disastrous that chance encounter was. It’s been a week or so but he still couldn’t forget about them. Every time he tried to rest and close his eyes, the image of a sad Claire and her anxious mother kept appearing in front of her eyes.

Daniel couldn’t believe that he got so attached to those two in such a short time. It wasn’t making any sense to him. He could tell that they were normal humans which meant that there was nothing like a mate or anything working here. Then why was there such a strong pull between them?

It would have been different if his worry was only towards Claire considering he’s a man who loved children and found happiness around them. But that wasn’t the case. As much as he wanted to meet Claire again to complete his promise of getting her ice cream, he was also looking forward to meeting her mom, and that excitement too was more than needed.

Letting out a small sigh, he grabbed the card and studied the information written over it. He decided to find out exactly what was going on with him and with that determination, he slipped the card into his coat’s pocket and grabbed his car keys before leaving his office.

On his way towards the elevator, he ordered Secretary Wang to cancel all his schedules for the rest of the afternoon. Though the secretary was surprised by the order, he didn’t question and did exactly what he was told.

After sending a quick message to Domenic to tell him that he won’t be joining him for lunch as he was going out to get some fresh air, Daniel made his way towards his car that was parked beside Crist’s in the underground private parking lot of the company.

It didn’t take him more than them minutes to find his way to the little bakery mentioned on the card that Claire’s mother handed him.

As he came out of the car and moved towards the shop, he suddenly realized that his heart was beating rapidly as if it was going to pop out of his chest at any moment.

Taking in a deep breath to calm himself down, Daniel finally stepped inside the bakery and the sweet smell of vanilla and chocolate greeted him along with a soft musical voice.

"Welcome to my momma’s bakery!"
