The Bodyguard King's CEO Wife-Chapter 1380: The Operation Begins
Qin Dynasty.
Deep in the night, the forest around Long Mountain was dense. If it weren’t for the camp here, and it being a famous deep mountain in Gong County, it would be really difficult to find this place. Though Long Mountain is at a high altitude and shielded by trees, this is also an advantage for the Qin Army. Two thousand fully armed Qin soldiers lay in wait among the bushes. Tonight, there was no moon, pitch black, and the people in the rebel camp couldn’t see anything outside.
"All right." Ye Shikai made a gesture, and all the Qin Army soldiers came to an abrupt stop.
"Shangguan, if we go any further, we might be discovered. You stay here. Once we succeed, I’ll shoot a signal arrow, and you can charge in through the main gate." Ye Shikai said softly.
"Understood, Old Ye, two thousand soldiers are counting on your ten men."
"Don’t worry, just have the wine and feast ready for my celebration." Ye Shikai said, then turned and led the squad onward.
"Village chief, based on my reconnaissance yesterday, climbing up is the safest." Xue San pointed to the camp’s walls.
"Kid, are you crazy? Climbing up there is so high. What if something happens? Do you think the soldiers up there are blind?" Man Cang, already dissatisfied with Xue San, immediately refuted.
"Xue San is right. This camp is built against the mountain, taking full advantage of the terrain. Digging through the walls would be time-consuming and laborious, and the mountain stones are hard; we might not be able to dig through, so we can only climb up." Ye Shikai insisted against all objections. "Now is the hour of the ox, the time when people are most fatigued. The morale of the rebel troops is low, discipline is loose, we can use this opportunity."
"Man Cang, you stay with the brothers here. I’ll go up with Xue San to take care of the guards, and once it’s safe, you come up."
"No, village chief, it’s too dangerous for you and him to go up, let me accompany you."
"You big oaf, your footsteps are so heavy, do you want everyone to hear?" Xue San seized the opportunity to mock Man Cang. These two, one a fearless warrior on the battlefield, the other an experienced thief, were complete opposites in character. But Ye Shikai knew that if they could work together seamlessly, they would be unstoppable.
"You brat, want a beating?" Man Cang pretended to hit Xue San but was stopped by Ye Shikai.
"Quiet down, just follow my orders."
"Yes, village chief."
"Xue San, you go up first." Ye Shikai turned and ordered.
"Don’t worry, village chief, watch my skills." Xue San, true to his "God Stealer" nickname, wasn’t bragging about his wall-climbing skills. He threw up a rope, secured it, and then, with one hand pulling the rope, used a dagger to secure himself to the wooden wall with the other hand. He powered up with his legs, climbing swiftly and silently like a gecko.
After Ye Shikai made a gesture, he also climbed up the rope. Though Xue San was a wanderer, he had never killed. If they encountered rebel troops, Ye Shikai worried Xue San might have an accident.
"Village chief, look over there." As the two were climbing the wall, they stealthily poked their heads out. There were several patrols of rebel troops on the camp wall, but they looked exhausted, walking a bit before sitting down and falling asleep against the wall.
"Follow me." Ye Shikai whispered, flipping over the wall, powering forward directly behind a guard, and drawing out a dagger.
Scrunch.
"Village chief, you’re impressive." Xue San looked at Ye Shikai, a gaze of admiration shining on his face.
"If I had these skills, who in the world would dare to bully me?"
"All right, you’re with the Qin Army now, stop bringing up the world of outlaws." Ye Shikai reminded.
"Yes, yes, yes, the village chief is right, I won’t mention it anymore." Xue San said repeatedly, things were progressing smoothly, boosting his confidence. Perhaps Ye Shikai was his "benefactor."
"There are three more ahead, see them?" Ye Shikai pointed at the people ahead, three guards slumped together, dead tired.
"Follow behind me." Ye Shikai lightened his steps and crept forward, directly slitting their throats.
"Who goes there?"
Ye Shikai suddenly turned around; a sudden sound came from the watchtower, an alarm soldier.
Woosh.
Before Ye Shikai could react, a crossbow arrow had been fired; the sentinel was hit and fell on the spot, instantly dead.
"Village chief, are you okay?" Xue San, breathing heavily, caught up. Ye Shikai looked at the crossbow in his hand, astonished. It was a full eighty paces away, and Xue San killed with a single arrow; this was his first time in combat.
"I’m okay, thanks a lot just now." Ye Shikai, still a bit shaken, if not for Xue San’s timely intervention, letting this sentinel notify the guards would have been dangerous.
After confirming the area was safe, Ye Shikai went to where they had climbed up and tugged on the rope three times.
"They’re coming up, we’ll guard here." Ye Shikai drew out his crossbow, carefully scanning the nearby area. The patrols changed shifts every two incense sticks; their time was limited.
Five minutes later.
"How about it? Are the brothers all up?"
"Don’t worry, village chief, they’re all up."
"Very well, the next part is up to us. Everyone, follow me."
"Understood."
.................................
"The camp gate is very heavy; someone needs to turn the wheel up top to pull it. There are more than twenty guards below the gate; we need to move fast."
"Understood."
"Village chief, let me go down and take out those guards." Man Cang suggested, it had been a while since he was on the battlefield.
"All right, you and I will take three people to deal with the guards below, and Xue San will take the rest to operate the switch and open the gate."
"Village chief, maybe I should go with you." Xue San hesitated to say.
"Enough, you don’t kill. You’ve already contributed to this mission. If you come with us, are you going to kill, or do we need to protect you?"
"All right, I will complete the task." Xue San cupped his fists in response, taking four people up to the camp walls.
"Load crossbows, follow me." Ye Shikai led four people, not moving quickly, striding "boldly" toward the gate.
"Everyone note my command. It’s dark now; they can’t see us."
"Understood."
The camp gate.
"Really, patrolling so late, aren’t they letting people sleep?"
"All right, stop complaining. Look, the relief brothers are here."
"But it’s not time for the shift change yet."
A few guards saw silhouettes approaching from afar, curious since only a single incense stick had passed; how had people shown up?
"Halt, who goes there?" The guards across shouted, but the people remained silent, continuing forward.
"Halt, didn’t you hear? I’m talking to you."
Forty paces, thirty paces.
Ye Shikai assessed the distance, knowing the crossbow’s range was less than a longbow’s, so they had to get close to be effective.
Twenty paces.
A flicker of murderous intent flashed in Ye Shikai’s eyes, suddenly drawing out the crossbow arrow, pulling the trigger, the bolts shot at the guards like rain.
"Fire!"
