The billionaire's only desire-Chapter 69: First attack
Chapter 69: First attack
The park was silent, with the tranquility of a dark night settling in. Dalton’s arms were wrapped around Maya’s neck, and her arm was around his waist as they strolled through the park.
"This is nice. We should come here often in our spare time," Maya, sounded drowsy as she rested her head against Dalton’s shoulder.
"We will visit this park whenever you want. But first, let me get you home. Your eyes are fluttering, and your voice sounds sleepy."
Maya nodded, mumbling something gibberish.
Dalton scooped her into his arms and gear back to Maya’s truck. He could hear faint breaths escaping her lips; she was fast asleep.
As Dalton approached the truck, he was startled by the sound of a gunshot echoing through the quiet night. He tightened his arms around Maya protectively, glaring intently in the direction of the gunshot, but was met only with impenetrable darkness. Maya slept soundly in his arms, oblivious to the danger they might be facing.
A figure suddenly jolts toward Dalton, rimming him with fear for Maya’s life, as he had no weapon to protect her other than his fists.
"Mr. Black, it’s me," the figure said. Dalton recognized the person.
"Steve?" It was his head of security.
Suddenly, five well-built men surrounded Dalton and Maya from all sides. Dalton breathed a sigh of relief. These men were part of his elite security team. They make themselves invincible, protecting him in the shadows. They only revealed themselves when absolutely necessary.
"There was a threat. We have eliminated it." Steve, the head of Dalton’s security team steely informed him.
That explained the gunshot. "Where is the body?" Dalton asked.
Steve led Dalton to a large tree, and they went behind it. A dead man was lying face down, a sniper rifle in his hand.
"A hitman?" Dalton growled at Steve. "How did he get so close to us?"
"Sorry for our incompetence tonight, sir. The team will work on our shortcomings," Steve apologized.
Dalton inspected the body of the deceased hitman. Steve shone a flashlight to help Dalton get a better look.
A gaping hole punctured the back of the hitman’s head, where a bullet had entered his skull.
"Well done, Steve. You took him down with one bullet," Dalton hailed his head of security. With just a brief examination, Dalton deduced that this hitman was very skilled. It seemed he was a former special forces soldier. No wonder it took a considerable amount of time for his security team to detect and take him down
"You weren’t the target, sir," Steve suddenly quipped.
Dalton’s eyes quivered as he stared at Maya, who was still peacefully sleeping in his arms. "Maya was the target, right?"
.Steve nodded.
Dalton’s heart clenched tightly; his enemies had discovered his weakness.
"Sir, we will take precautionary measures to protect her," Steve assured him confidently.
Dalton glared coldly at his security team. "I don’t want tonight’s mistake repeated. If another threat gets this close to me and Maya, I will let Aiden have your heads!" he threatened. Fear washed over the men’s faces; Aiden was like the angel of death; no man dares to face him.
Maya suddenly stirred in Dalton’s arms, reminding him that he needed to take her home.
They got home safely, and Dalton gently tugged Maya into bed, kissing her goodnight on her forehead. It was a relief that Maya was a heavy sleeper; she would never know about the danger they had nearly faced tonight.
***
Dalton took a day off from work. He has spent the entire day in his study, beating himself.
At the moment, he is drowning in whiskey. A frightening realization keeps hitting him, suffocating him: he could have lost Maya last night
His whole world could have come crashing down. Gone completely dark because Maya is his world.
"Steve contacted me right after he took down that hitman," Aiden came in a rush, his hair disheveled and his eyes anxious as he held a box in his hands. "I identified the hitman immediately. He is one of the best in the business—a retired special forces soldier."
"I figured that out. Have you found out who hired him?"
Aiden nodded as he dropped the box he was holding on the desk and opened it to reveal the severed head of a man, dripping with blood.
Dalton gazed at it sternly. "Is this the head of the fool who hired the hitman?" he asked, recognizing the man. He had recently used brute force to compel him to sell his construction company to him.
"Yes, Steve sent me the photo of the hitman right away. I immediately began digging and discovered who had hired him. I tracked down this fool who dared to hire a hitman to kill you and beheaded him. Of course, I tortured him first." Aiden grinned in a disturbingly deranged manner, speaking in his psychopathic tone that could frighten anyone—except for Dalton, the only person Aiden truly feared.
"That was quick," Dalton said, impressed. "This fool thinks he could succeed. I snatched his company from him, and in retaliation, he tried to have Maya, the love of my life, killed." Dalton’s chest tightened with a mix of anger and anxiety.
The man is a complete idiot for believing he could get away with this. Every person who has tried to kill Dalton has ended up beheaded by Aiden, his psychopathic brother. So, no one dares. But this fool dared to try, and he knows exactly why.
Maya. She is an easy target. His weakness. Killing her would be the end of him, and his enemies know it.
Aiden’s voice dropped to a low, indignant tone. "I told you so. Maya needs her own security team to protect her. Steve is working on it."
Dalton was crumbling with fear inside.
"Dalton, I will personally protect your girl. I assure you that I will make sure no harm comes her way," Aiden pledged.
Dalton made a pledge as well in his heart, he would protect Maya with his life.
